"Mankind will not find peace until
it turns with confidence to My Mercy"

A Brief History of the Devotion

The diary of Saint Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated (3rd grade) Polish Nun of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, is the source of the Devotion to Divine Mercy. This diary is available in English as Divine Mercy In My Soul (Marian Press, Stockbridge, Massachusetts).

In the 1930's, in obedience to her spiritual director, Father Michael Sopocko, Saint Faustina wrote a 600 page diary telling about God's revelations to her about His unfathomable mercy. She was asked to be the Apostle and Secretary of God's Mercy by the Lord.

She wrote and suffered in secret. Only her spiritual director and her superiors knew of the visions and sufferings she was undergoing. Only after her death in 1938 did those around her find out about her suffering and great mystical experiences.

In 1931 Our Lord appeared to Saint Faustina in a vision. She saw Jesus clothed in a white garment with His right hand raised in blessing. His left hand was touching His garment in the area of the heart, from where two large rays came forth, one red and the other pale. Jesus explained to her; paint an image according to the pattern you see with signature: Jesus, I trust in you . . . I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise the victory over [its] enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I myself will defend it as my own glory . . . I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature; "Jesus, I Trust In You."

Dedication of the Community of Sauk Centre

The Merciful Jesus Carving and the corner where it stands was dedicated on April 18th, 1982 at St. Paul's Church. The Holy Mass was celebrated by Bishop George Speltz, con-celebrated by Fr. Elmer Torborg and Fr. Richard Drabik, Provincial of the Marian Helpers of Stockbridge, MA who was the guest Homilist. Also attending the dedication Mass was Maureen Digan of Stockbridge, MA.

Maureen witnessed to her miraculous recovery from illness at the gravesite of Blessed Faustina. The miracle was recognized by the Catholic Church and was used in the cause of bringing Sister Faustina to the honor of being called "Blessed Faustina." We believe this to be the first community in this country to be dedicated to the Mercy of God.
