Gill's fictional 'Totally Depressing News Network: TDNN'.\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s Lent and I&#8217;m a Catholic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how come I&#8217;m not sitting in some dark corner, reflecting on doom, gloom, and how perfectly rotten I am?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or at least moaning and wringing my hands over the world&#8217;s dreadfully dire state: as illustrated in my news feed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, it&#8217;s because neither will help me line myself up with Jesus: doing prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/lenten-misery-misses-the-point\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup> Work on lining myself up, that is: it&#8217;s a job that lasts as long as life does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"fasting\"><\/a>Fasting and Focus<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/a-goal-for-lent\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20181226ff\/20190228-800px-Lobster_Thermidor_entree-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"thefoodplace.co.uk's photo: 'Half &amp;and half Lobster thermidor or garlic butter served with hand cut chips and a green salad at The Farmers Boy in Shepley'. (2011) via Wikipedia, see https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/thefoodplace\/5772670284\/\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Now, <strong>fasting<\/strong> I could feel guilty about, since &#8220;abstaining from luxuries&#8221;, as one resource put it, assumes that luxuries are already part of my everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can&#8217;t give up lobster thermidor and Caribbean cruises for Lent because they aren&#8217;t part of my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No virtue there: they&#8217;re simply not options for me. On the other hand, avoiding lesser luxuries is possible, and emphatically a work in progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even so, giving up stuff isn&#8217;t the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working on &#8220;a true inner conversion &#8230; to follow Christ&#8217;s will more faithfully&#8221; <strong>is<\/strong>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/lenten-misery-misses-the-point\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"gloominess\"><\/a>Gloominess, Health, and a Little History<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/storytelling-imaginary-worlds-and-being-human\/#coming\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20200519ff\/20200813-800px-Preaching-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"George Bellows' cartoon for Metropolitan magazine, illustrating Billy Sunday's preaching style. (1775-1778)\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">18th century illustration of the four temperaments: phlegmatic, choleric, sanguine, melancholic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s because &#8216;blessed are the miserable, for they shall spread misery&#8217; is <strong>not<\/strong> one of the beatitudes, and melancholia isn&#8217;t healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Melancholia&#8221;, along with other Greco-Roman ideas about disease, humorism, and the mind, hasn&#8217;t been part of serious medicine for a century or so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s associated with one of the four old-school personality types:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choleric<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Melancholic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phlegmatic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sanguine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Melancholia&#8221;, as a diagnosis, wasn&#8217;t quite the same as persistent depressive disorder; but it wasn&#8217;t all that different, either. Both \u2014 bear in mind that this isn&#8217;t a technical definition \u2014 involve folks brooding on gloom, doom, and finding dark linings in every silver cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Middle Ages, folks recognized it as one of the ways a person&#8217;s mind can go wonky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, about five centuries back, something weird happened.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/lenten-misery-misses-the-point\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"fashionable\"><\/a>Fashionable Melancholy and Me<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/the-grand-canyon-the-petrified-forest-and-the-big-picture\/#again\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150704-800px-Durer_Melancholia_I-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Albrecht D\u00fcrer's 'Melancholia I,.' (1514)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Turns out that seeing gloominess as a sign of sagacity and serious purpose didn&#8217;t start in the 2oth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Ficino transformed what had hitherto been regarded as the most calamitous of all the humours into the mark of genius.
