I generally make the sign of the Cross at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The sign of the Cross is a very &#8220;Catholic&#8221; gesture. It &#8220;reminds us in a physical way of the Paschal Mystery we celebrate: the death and Resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/trinity\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a prayer, a blessing, and a sacramental; and that&#8217;s another topic. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p2s2c4a1.htm#1668\">1668<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p2s2c4a1.htm#1670\">1670<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Dali&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crucifixion_(Corpus_Hypercubus)\">Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus)<\/a>&#8221; is very &#8220;Catholic,&#8221; too; although not it&#8217;s not like the mass-produced 19th-century stuff many associate with our faith.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"i\"><\/a>I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if a half-millennium from now, some tight-collar Catholics will be upset by new art that <strong>doesn&#8217;t<\/strong> present the Cross as an unfolded <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tesseract\">tesseract<\/a>, and that&#8217;s yet another <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Four-dimensional_space\">topic<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geometric_topology\">Topics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/god-angels-and-belshazzar\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20161111-Tissot_Abraham_and_the_Three_Angels-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>This morning&#8217;s readings, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PE.HTM#PENT.GEN.12.1\">Genesis 12:1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PE.HTM#PENT.GEN.12.4\">4<\/a>A; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P116.HTM#NTLET.2TIM.1.8\">2 Timothy 1:8<\/a>B-<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P116.HTM#NTLET.2TIM.1.10\">10<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVQ.HTM#GOSP.MAT.17.1\">Matthew 17:1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVQ.HTM#GOSP.MAT.17.9\">9<\/a>; cover something like a dozen centuries, from the time Abram went west \u2014 literally, not <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/go-west\">figuratively<\/a> \u2014 to about two millennia before today.<\/p>\n<p>Abram was re-named <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abraham\">Abraham<\/a>, and now is honored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abrahamic_religions\">Abrahamic religions<\/a>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/hate-justice-forgiveness\/#i\">November 29, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Abraham is &#8220;our father in Faith,&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/trinity\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup> but almost certainly not among my ancestors. I can&#8217;t be sure, but in his day my forebears were probably well north and west of the Holy Land. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/who-is-my-neighbor\/#my\">February 1, 2017<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s been scholarly debate of late, leading some to assume that Abraham lived a whole lot more recently than we thought; or is basically a fictional character.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not surprised that we&#8217;ve got precious little documentation on him. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Late_Bronze_Age_collapse\">Late Bronze Age collapse<\/a>, a few really bad decades between 1200 and 1150 BC, happened a few centuries after he left <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haran_(biblical_place)\">Haran<\/a>. I&#8217;m surprised we remember as much as we do.<\/p>\n<p>We haven&#8217;t had anything quite like the Late Bronze Age collapse since, happily.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"hypothetical\"><\/a>Hypothetical Smith<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/wait-for-it\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20160930-Ishtar_gate_in_Pergamon_museum_in_Berlin-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Let&#8217;s say that today God tells a Mr. Smythe to move from Baltimore, Maryland, to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fremont,_Nebraska\">Fremont<\/a>, Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p>This is all hypothetical. I&#8217;m just making a point about how record-keeping isn&#8217;t always up to 20th century standards.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Smythe moves, and changes his name from Smythe to Smith. Then, around the 24th century, something catastrophic happens. It might be a global war, overconfidence in a system that looked good on paper, whatever. Think the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2012_India_blackouts\">2012 India blackouts<\/a> on a global scale, micromanaged by an incompetently paranoid bureaucracy.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/trinity\/#3\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Details would be different from the Late Bronze Age collapse, but the effects would be similar.<\/p>\n<p>We still don&#8217;t know exactly what happened some 3,200 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be optimistic, and assume that survivors start rebuilding civilization; as we did before. A few would even have enough free time to teach their kids how to read and write.<\/p>\n<p>Different folks would tell different stories about what happened. Some would pass along lore from earlier ages. Many records would be lost.<\/p>\n<p>We could get tales as historically accurate as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iliad\">Homer&#8217;s<\/a> account of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trojan_War\">Trojan War<\/a> and Plato&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantis\">Atlantis<\/a>. These would get passed on, too. We like good stories.<\/p>\n<p>Around the year 5200, some scholars might decide that our Mr. Smith didn&#8217;t exist. They&#8217;d have a point, sort of, since his Social Security Number isn&#8217;t in any surviving records.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, many scholars think there&#8217;s something real behind Homer&#8217;s &#8220;Illiad.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heinrich_Schliemann\">Scholiemann<\/a> finding what&#8217;s left of Troy probably helped. I&#8217;ve heard that he dug through, and obliterated, what might have been evidence that would have supported some of his claims, and that&#8217;s yet again another topic.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"remembering\"><\/a>Remembering<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantis#In_or_near_the_Mediterranean_Sea\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170306ff\/20170310-580px-Santorini_Landsat-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;m pretty sure that Plato&#8217;s Atlantis, from his &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timaeus_(dialogue)\">Timaeus<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Critias_(dialogue)\">Critias<\/a>,&#8221; is fictional. It&#8217;s a good story, though, and I enjoyed George Pal&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantis,_the_Lost_Continent\">Atlantis, the Lost Continent<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Enthusiastic folks like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ignatius_L._Donnelly\">Ignatius L. Donnelly<\/a> helped fuel my culture&#8217;s occasionally-misguided interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lost_world_(genre)\">lost civilizations<\/a>, and assorted New Age <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Age#Astrological_cycles_and_the_Age_of_Aquarius\">goofiness<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/trinity\/#4\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Plato might have gotten the idea for his fictional city from real events.<\/p>\n<p>A civilization flourished on Crete from around the time construction started at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C4%A0gantija\">\u0120gantija<\/a> to when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thutmose_III\">Thutmose III<\/a> was making Egypt a superpower. We started uncovering their ruins about a century back. Somewhere along the line, we started calling them <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minoan_civilization#Etymology\">Minoans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists and archeologists <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minoan_civilization#Demise_theories\">aren&#8217;t sure<\/a> how, or if, the explosive eruption at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santorini\">Santorini<\/a> affected Minoan civilization. They survived the eruption, but someone or something burned at least some of their cities not all that long after.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minoan_eruption\">Minoan eruption<\/a>&#8221; may or may not be half-remembered in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Titanomachy\">Titanomachy<\/a> described in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hesiod\">Hesiod&#8217;s<\/a> &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theogony\">Theogony<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minoan_eruption\">Wikipedia<\/a> page put it, &#8220;there are no clear ancient records of the eruption.&#8221; Again, I&#8217;m not surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Descendants of Abraham&#8217;s son <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isaac\">Isaac<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rebecca\">Rebecca<\/a> remembered who they were. Some of them, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>But even after a 40-year reality check on their way out of Egypt, some decided that they&#8217;d rather put someone or something besides God at the top of their priorities. Repeatedly. That&#8217;s a bad idea. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P4N.HTM#PENT.DEU.8.2\">Deuteronomy 8:2<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P4N.HTM#PENT.DEU.8.3\">3<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c1a1.htm#2112\">2112<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c1a1.htm#2114\">2114<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"exiles\"><\/a>Exiles<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neo-Assyrian_Empire#Tiglath-Pileser_III.2C_744.E2.80.93727_BC\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/201508ff\/20151219-600px-Deportation_of_Jews_by_Assyrians-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Assyria was a major power a bit over 27 centuries back, around <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duke_Zhuang_of_Zheng\">Duke Zhuang of Zheng&#8217;s<\/a> day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neo-Assyrian_Empire\">Assyria&#8217;s<\/a> leaders were trying to unite the (western) world into a single empire. They were succeeding: for the moment.<\/p>\n<p>We call their outfit the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neo-Assyrian_Empire\">Neo-Assyrian Empire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_Assyrian_Empire\">Old Assyrian Empire<\/a> predates the Late Bronze Age collapse. The Middle Assyrian Empire \u2014 our name for it, not theirs \u2014 survived the cataclysm, but <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_Assyrian_Empire#Assyria_during_the_Bronze_Age_Collapse.2C_1055.E2.80.93936_BC\">shrank<\/a> considerably. That was a resilient civilization.<\/p>\n<p>Assyria had invaded Israel back in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Menahem\">Menahem&#8217;s<\/a> day. He paid them to leave. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P9F.HTM#HIS.2KIN.15.19\">2 Kings 15:19<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P9F.HTM#HIS.2KIN.15.21\">21<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Ahaz had trouble with Assyria, too, of a different sort. He&#8217;d seen an altar in Damascus, and been so impressed that he &#8220;&#8230;sent to Uriah the priest a model of the altar and a detailed design of its construction.&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P9G.HTM#HIS.2KIN.16.7\">2 Kings 16:7<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P9G.HTM#HIS.2KIN.16.18\">18<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Hezekiah \u2014 son of Elah and Abi, daughter of Zarchariah \u2014 sorted the mess out, to an extent. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P9I.HTM#HIS.2KIN.18.1\">2 Kings 18-1<\/a> and following tells about that.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Assyrian_captivity\">Assyrian captivity<\/a> didn&#8217;t happen all at once. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiglath-Pileser_III\">Tiglath-Pileser III<\/a> started the process. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sargon_II\">Sargon II<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sennacherib\">Sennacherib<\/a> finished the job, although they didn&#8217;t take Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;However, they offended the God of their fathers by lusting after the gods of the natives of the land, whom God had cleared out of their way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P9V.HTM#$V1\">2<\/a><\/sup> Therefore the God of Israel incited against them the anger of Pul, king of Assyria, and of Tiglath-pileser, king of Assyria, who deported the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh and brought them to Halah, Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, where they have remained to this day.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P9V.HTM#HIS.1CHR.5.25\">1 Chronicles 5:25<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P9V.HTM#HIS.1CHR.5.26\">26<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure why the chronicler wrote &#8220;Pul &#8230; and Tiglath-pilesser.&#8221; Tiglath-Pileser III&#8217;s name was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiglath-Pileser_III#Origins\">Pulu<\/a> when he had the Assyrian royal family killed, and took over. Two more-legitimate rulers had been named Tiglath-Pileser before that, which could explain it.<\/p>\n<p>Later, around the time that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zhou_dynasty\">Zhou dynasty&#8217;s<\/a> King <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King_Kuang_of_Zhou\">Kuang<\/a> died, Egypt&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Necho_II\">Necho II<\/a> planted <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jehoiakim\">Jehoiakim<\/a> on the throne in Jerusalem. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PBK.HTM#HIS.2CHR.36.3\">2 Chronicles 36-3<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PBK.HTM#HIS.2CHR.36.6\">6<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>That was after one of the battles at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tel_Megiddo#Battles\">Meggido<\/a>. This one was between <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nebuchadnezzar_II\">Nebuchadnezzar II&#8217;s<\/a> Babylonian forces and Necho II&#8217;s Egyptian army. We call that iteration of the Babylonian Empire the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neo-Babylonian_Empire\">Neo-Babylonian Empire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nebuchadnezzar_II\">Nebuchadnezzar II<\/a> <strong>and<\/strong> Necho II lost the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Carchemish\">Battle of Carchemish<\/a>. That&#8217;s not the way Nebuchadnezzar told it. In fairness, Nebuchadnezzar still had a fairly-effective army.<\/p>\n<p>Jehoiakim switched sides. Nebuchadnezzar returned the favor by sacking Jerusalem, which started the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Babylonian_captivity\">Babylonian captivity<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PBK.HTM#HIS.2CHR.36.3\">2 Chronicles 36-3<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PBK.HTM#HIS.2CHR.36.6\">6<\/a> sums up <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jehoiakim\">Jehoiakim&#8217;s<\/a> regrettable reign.<\/p>\n<p>Nebuchadnezzar didn&#8217;t last. Neither did the Neo-Assyrian or Neo-Babylonian empires. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/wait-for-it\/\">October 2, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Many folks, myself included, think highly of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyrus_the_Great\">Cyrus the Great<\/a>. For good reason:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8216;Thus says Cyrus, king of Persia: &#8220;All the kingdoms of the earth the LORD, the God of heaven, has given to me, and he has also charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever, therefore, among you belongs to any part of his people, let him go up, and may his God be with him!&#8221;&#8216;&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PBK.HTM#HIS.2CHR.36.23\">2 Chronicles 26:23<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;And they lived happily ever after?&#8221; No. We&#8217;re not there yet.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"transfiguration\"><\/a>The Transfiguration, Briefly<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Bloch#Gallery\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170306ff\/20170310-Transfiguration_bloch-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Today&#8217;s Gospel reading, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVQ.HTM#GOSP.MAT.17.1\">Matthew 17:1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVQ.HTM#GOSP.MAT.17.9\">9<\/a>; talks about the Transfiguration. So do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWB.HTM#GOSP.MAR.9.2\">Mark 9:2<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWB.HTM#GOSP.MAR.9.8\">8<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWS.HTM#GOSP.LUK.9.28\">Luke 9:28<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWS.HTM#GOSP.LUK.9.36\">36<\/a>. John&#8217;s Gospel doesn&#8217;t, but does have this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;And the Word became flesh <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PX9.HTM#$3Q7\">9<\/a><\/sup> and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father&#8217;s only Son, full of grace and truth.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PX9.HTM#GOSP.JOH.1.14\">John 1:14<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That could be John&#8217;s description of the Transfiguration, or not. I don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p>God said &#8220;this is my Son&#8221; at our Lord&#8217;s baptism, too: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.13\">Matthew 3:13<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.17\">17<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW3.HTM#GOSP.MAR.1.1\">Mark 1:1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW3.HTM#GOSP.MAR.1.11\">11<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWM.HTM#GOSP.LUK.3.21\">Luke 3:21<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWM.HTM#GOSP.LUK.3.23\">23<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Transfiguration is a sort of sneak preview of God&#8217;s kingdom. Peter, James, and John, briefly saw Jesus as, unmistakably, the Son of God. They also perceived the Trinity. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p122a3p3.htm#554\">554<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p122a3p3.htm#556\">556<\/a>)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;the whole Trinity appears&#8212;the Father in the voice, the Son in the man, the Holy Ghost in the bright cloud&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\n(&#8220;Summa Theologica,&#8221; Thomas Aquinas, <a href=\"http:\/\/dhspriory.org\/thomas\/summa\/TP\/TP045.html\">III, 45, 4<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As I said, I can&#8217;t claim Abraham as an ancestor. Not physically. I do, however, take the &#8220;Shema&#8221; very seriously:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05de\u05b7\u05e2 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c2\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b6\u05d7\u05b8\u05bd\u05d3<br \/>\n&#8220;Sh&#8217;ma Yisra&#8217;eil Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad.<br \/>\n&#8220;<strong>Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n(From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewfaq.org\/shemaref.htm\">Shema<\/a>, Judaism 101)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><a name=\"God\"><\/a>God is ONE<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shield_of_the_Trinity\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/Shield-Trinity-Scutum-Fidei-English-329-2.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I don&#8217;t understand the Trinity. Not on an operational, nuts-and-bolts level.<\/p>\n<p>God&#8217;s God, I&#8217;m not, so I can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>The Trinity is a mystery \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/twenty-twenty_hindsight\">20-20 hindsight<\/a> lets us see hints of the Trinity in the universe and Old Testament, but we weren&#8217;t going to reason it out. God had to tell us. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p2.htm#237\">237<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The best way I&#8217;ve found of quickly describing the Trinity is a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shield_of_the_Trinity\">Shield of the Trinity<\/a>,&#8221; or &#8220;Scutum Fidei.&#8221; It&#8217;s that diagram with &#8220;The Father,&#8221; &#8220;The Son,&#8221; and &#8220;The Holy Spirit&#8221; in the corners.<\/p>\n<p>Christians are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We&#8217;re following orders our Lord gave us, right before leaving:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW1.HTM#$3C0\">11<\/a><\/sup> Then Jesus approached and said to them, &#8216;All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.<br \/>\n&#8220;Go, therefore, <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW1.HTM#$3C1\">12<\/a><\/sup> and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit,<br \/>\n&#8220;teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW1.HTM#$3C2\">13<\/a><\/sup> And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.'&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW1.HTM#GOSP.MAT.28.18\">Matthew 28:18<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW1.HTM#GOSP.MAT.28.20\">20<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s the <strong>name<\/strong>, not the <strong>names<\/strong>. That&#8217;s because God is <strong>One:<\/strong> &#8220;the almighty Father, his only Son, and the Holy Spirit: the Most Holy Trinity.&#8221; (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p2.htm#233\">233<\/a>; &#8220;Summa Theologica,&#8221; Thomas Aquinas, <a href=\"http:\/\/dhspriory.org\/thomas\/summa\/FP\/FP031.html\">I, 31, 1<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>We still aren&#8217;t at the &#8220;happily ever after&#8221; part.<\/p>\n<p>What we read about in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW1.HTM#GOSP.MAT.28.18\">Matthew 28:18<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW1.HTM#GOSP.MAT.28.20\">20<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXV.HTM#GOSP.ACT.1.10\">Acts 1:10<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXV.HTM#GOSP.ACT.1.11\">11<\/a> happened about two millennia back. Our Lord is doing whatever&#8217;s mentioned in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXM.HTM#GOSP.JOH.14.3\">John 14:3<\/a>, and our standing orders haven&#8217;t changed. He told us to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVX.HTM#GOSP.MAT.24.44\">be prepared<\/a>&#8221; for his return, which I think is a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s still another topic. However, I also am quite convinced that it is a bad idea, along with letting anything \u2014 money, politics, pleasure, family, fame, whatever \u2014 except God take first place in my priorities.
