Then he died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No surprises there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The whole point of crucifixion was to kill someone: slowly and painfully.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/a-messy-death-an-empty-tomb-and-the-best-news-ever\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes the subject died during the physical abuse that came first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, this person died, was taken off the cross, and was buried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Roman Empire went through good years, bad years, really bad years, and eventually crumbled. More than a millennium after that, Europe&#8217;s warlords gave up trying to re-start the Roman Empire: partly because they were building their own. It&#8217;s been about a century since the European empires fractured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;ve been some very interesting developments since then: some of then, I think, very hopeful, and that&#8217;s another topic or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"Jesus\"><\/a>Jesus: Dead and Buried<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/when-you-come-into-your-kingdom\/#dialog\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150410-538px-Jacopo_Tintoretto_-_Crucifixion_detail_-_WGA22517-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"'Crucifixion,' detail, Jacopo Tintoretto. (1565)\"><\/a>This particular person&#8217;s messy death isn&#8217;t what made his execution stand out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s what happened later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The burial \u2014 interment, technically, I suppose \u2014 was hasty. Maybe prompt is a better word, since they didn&#8217;t have much time, and did what they could with what they had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;After this, Joseph of Arimathea, secretly a disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted it. So he came and took his body.<br>&#8220;Nicodemus, the one who had first come to him at night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about one hundred pounds.<br>&#8220;They took the body of Jesus and bound it with burial cloths along with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom.<br>&#8220;Now in the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried.<br>&#8220;So they laid Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation day; for the tomb was close by.&#8221; <br>(<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/19#51019038\">John 19:38<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/19#51019042\">42<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"empty\"><\/a>An Empty Tomb, Meetings, and \u2014<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/easter-morning-mary-of-magdalas-experience\/#ihave\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20190415ff\/20190420-Brooklyn_Museum_Mary_Magdalene_Angels_Tomb_James_Tissot-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"James Tissot's 'Mary Magdalene Questions the Angels in the Tomb.' (between 1886 and 1894)\"><\/a>What&#8217;s happened so far might be interesting for a few history buffs. If that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s what happened the next Sunday morning that&#8217;s had folks like me repeating the story and celebrating ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exact details vary, depending on which of the Gospel&#8217;s writers were describing what happened: which doesn&#8217;t bother me, since none of them were Americans, weren&#8217;t writing a &#8216;just the facts ma&#8217;am&#8217; report, and that&#8217;s a great many more topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What matters is that the body was missing. <strong>Jesus wasn&#8217;t in the tomb.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It took 40 days of meetings, including at least one working lunch, to convince our Lord&#8217;s surviving disciples that they weren&#8217;t hallucinating, weren&#8217;t talking to a ghost: and that <strong>Jesus had stopped being dead.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"best\"><\/a>\u2014  The Best News Ever<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/fear-change-a-loving-god-and-choices\/#promises\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150328-Piero_della_Francesca_-_Resurrection_-_WGA17609-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"'The Resurrection of Jesus Christ,' Piero della Francesca.
