Derogatory epithets<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/anger-and-whitewashed-tombs\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup> getting spat back and forth on some social media give me that impression, anyway.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/trusting-feelings-within-reason\/#high\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/Bloch-SermonOnTheMount329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Getting angry is one thing. Staying angry is another. Hurling insults \u2014 brings me to part of today&#8217;s Gospel reading, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.17\">Matthew 5:17<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.37\">37<\/a>. It&#8217;s from the Sermon on the Mount:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#$2X5\">15<\/a><\/sup> <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#$2X6\">16<\/a><\/sup> &#8216;You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, &#8220;You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#$2X7\">17<\/a><\/sup> But I say to you, whoever is angry <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#$2X8\">18<\/a><\/sup> with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, &#8216;Raqa,&#8217; will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, &#8216;You fool,&#8217; will be liable to fiery Gehenna.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.21\">Matthew 5:21<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.22\">22<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/sermon+on+the+mount\">Sermon on the Mount<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM\">Matthew 5<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVF.HTM\">6<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM\">7<\/a>, is a sort of &#8216;Christianity 101:&#8217; a look at what being a Christian means. There&#8217;s with a shorter version in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWP.HTM#GOSP.LUK.6.20\">Luke 6:20<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWP.HTM#GOSP.LUK.6.49\">49<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It boils down to &#8216;love God, love my neighbor, everyone&#8217;s my neighbor.&#8217; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#GOSP.MAT.22.36\">Matthew 22:36<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#GOSP.MAT.22.40\">40<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWE.HTM#GOSP.MAR.12.28\">Mark 12:28<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWE.HTM#GOSP.MAR.12.31\">31<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.43\">Matthew 5:43<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.44\">44<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWE.HTM#GOSP.MAR.12.28\">Mark 12:28<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWE.HTM#GOSP.MAR.12.31\">31<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.25\">Luke 10:25<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.30\">30<\/a>; Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a7.htm#1825\">1825<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"raqa\"><\/a>&#8220;Raqa?!&#8221;<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basal_ganglia\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20170211-490px-Basal_Ganglia_and_Related_Structures-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#$2X8\">Raqa<\/a>,&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/anger-and-whitewashed-tombs\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup> or &#8220;reqa,&#8221; probably meant something like &#8220;imbecile,&#8221; or &#8220;blockhead&#8221; in Aramaic. Either way, it&#8217;s offensive: and mild, compared to some of the insults I&#8217;ve seen recently.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m pretty sure that the idea in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.22\">Matthew 5:22<\/a> is that verbal abuse is a bad idea, and we shouldn&#8217;t do it.<\/p>\n<p>Worse, in a way, venting my feelings could become a bad habit: which probably involves my <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basal_ganglia\">basal ganglia<\/a>, and certainly gets <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Habit#Elimination\">harder to change<\/a> as I get older.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been having a hard enough time <a href=\"https:\/\/englishlessons.wordpress.com\/2014\/01\/13\/idiom-of-the-week-dial-back\/\">dialing back<\/a> sarcasm and other impulsive responses I&#8217;ve developed, without adding online insults to the mix.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"whitewashed\"><\/a>Whitewashed Tombs<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P%C3%A8re_Lachaise_Cemetery#Gallery\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20170211-Tombeau_ouvert-329.JPG?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>But as long as I keep all those red-hot rejoinders I think of to myself, I&#8217;m okay: right?<\/p>\n<p>Not so much.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew shares a list of &#8220;woes,&#8221; <strong>really<\/strong> bad ideas, later: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVW.HTM#GOSP.MAT.23.13\">Matthew 23:13<\/a> through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVW.HTM#GOSP.MAT.23.35\">35<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re different sides of one really bad idea, actually: putting up a virtuous front while ignoring ethical rot inside. Luke mentions the problem, too: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWU.HTM#GOSP.LUK.11.34\">Luke 11:34<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWU.HTM#GOSP.LUK.11.52\">52<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PX3.HTM#GOSP.LUK.20.45\">Luke 20:45<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PX3.HTM#GOSP.LUK.20.47\">47<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVW.HTM#$385\">15<\/a><\/sup> &#8216;Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men&#8217;s bones and every kind of filth.<br \/>\n&#8220;Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVW.HTM#GOSP.MAT.23.27\">Matthew 23:27<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVW.HTM#GOSP.MAT.23.28\">28<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><a name=\"living\"><\/a>Living in Truth<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/sin-awareness-repentance\/#sin\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/David_Allan_The_Black_Stool-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Since I take God and truth seriously, living in truth makes sense. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PYR.HTM#NTLET.ROM.3.4\">Romans 3:4<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a8.htm#2465\">2465<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a8.htm#2470\">2470<\/a>, Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a8.htm#2505\">2505<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why behaving myself, controlling my actions, and what happens in my heart, is important. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVO.HTM#GOSP.MAT.15.18\">Matthew 15:18<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVO.HTM#GOSP.MAT.15.19\">19<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to say that I have achieved perfection; that my every act, word, thought, and impulse reflects nothing but love for God, neighbor, and \u2014 you get the picture. That&#8217;s not even close to being true.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve talked about truth, sin, and hypocrisy, before. Basically, Holy Willie is a <strong>terrible<\/strong> role model. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/sin-awareness-repentance\/#sin\">December 4, 2016<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/the-virtue-trap\/\">October 23, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"love\"><\/a>Love and Justice<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/mercy-still-practicing\/#mercy\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/201508ff\/20160312-792px-Jesus_und_Ehebrecherin-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I won&#8217;t denounce &#8216;those sinners over there&#8217; because I&#8217;m one of them. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/sin-awareness-repentance\/#sin\">December 4, 2016<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/temperance-catholic-style\/#gluttony\">July 10, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>But if I think I&#8217;m a sinner, and don&#8217;t ask God to smite offensive folks something fearful, how come I don&#8217;t keep quiet about the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/invective\">invective<\/a> I&#8217;ve been seeing?<\/p>\n<p>Forgiving others <strong>is<\/strong> important.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVF.HTM#$2XV\">11<\/a><\/sup> If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you.<br \/>\n&#8220;But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVF.HTM#GOSP.MAT.6.14\">Matthew 6:14<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVF.HTM#GOSP.MAT.6.15\">15<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#$2Y4\">1<\/a><\/sup> <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#$2Y5\">2<\/a><\/sup> &#8216;Stop judging, that you may not be judged.<br \/>\n&#8220;For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#GOSP.MAT.7.1\">Matthew 7:1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#GOSP.MAT.7.2\">2<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Loving my neighbor also means working for justice and bearing &#8220;witness to the truth.&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXQ.HTM#GOSP.JOH.18.37\">John 18:37<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a8.htm#2471\">2471<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a8.htm#2474\">2474<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Respect for the &#8220;transcendent dignity&#8221; of humanity demands that I work for justice &#8220;as far as possible.&#8221; (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a10.htm#976\">976<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a10.htm#980\">980<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a2.htm#1915\">1915<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a3.htm#1929\">1929<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a3.htm#1933\">1933<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s2a3.htm#2820\">2820<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I figure that includes trying to do something about less-than-loving behavior.<\/p>\n<p>For someone in my position, that includes suggesting that hurling insults is a bad idea: and acting like I believe it.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"ezekiel\"><\/a>Ezekiel, Ephesians, and Me<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ezekiel\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20170211-Ezekiel-s_vision-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I don&#8217;t have the sort of mandate Ezekiel got. However, I suspect that the general principle still applies, and taking a chance like this doesn&#8217;t make sense:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If I say to the wicked man, You shall surely die; and you do not warn him or speak out to dissuade him from his wicked conduct so that he may live: that wicked man shall die for his sin, but I will hold you responsible for his death.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PRB.HTM#PROPHB.EZE.3.18\">Ezekiel 3:18<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think this is good advice, too:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10B.HTM#NTLET.EPH.4.31\">Ephesians 4:31<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m still working on that. Particularly removing the bitterness and anger.
