(Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#31\">31<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#32\">32<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#319\">319<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>St. Bonaventure said that the universe communicates God&#8217;s glory, St. Thomas Aquinas said that the Almighty creates because God is good and loving. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#293\">293<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I think they&#8217;re right.<\/p>\n<p>God creates the universe, and humanity, because God loves us and wants to adopt us; all of us. It&#8217;s that simple. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.45\">Matthew 5:45<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PX9.HTM#GOSP.JOH.1.12\">John 1:12<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PX9.HTM#GOSP.JOH.1.14\">14<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXB.HTM#GOSP.JOH.3.17\">3:17<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PYW.HTM#NTLET.ROM.8.14\">Romans 8:14<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PYW.HTM#NTLET.ROM.8.17\">17<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P127.HTM#CATHL.2PET.1.3\">Peter 1:3<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P127.HTM#CATHL.2PET.1.4\">4<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/prologue.htm#1\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#27\">27<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#30\">30<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c2a1.htm#52\">52<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a7.htm#1825\">1825<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c3a2.htm#1996\">1996<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"paying\"><\/a>Paying Attention<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quantum_mechanics\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/QuantumClockwork-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s <strong>not<\/strong> simple, too.<\/p>\n<p>For one thing, neither of the Genesis creation narratives mentions angels. Not specifically, anyway. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P3.HTM#PENT.GEN.1.1\">Genesis 1:1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P4.HTM#PENT.GEN.2.3\">2, 3<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P4.HTM#PENT.GEN.2.4\">2, 4<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P4.HTM#PENT.GEN.2.25\">2, 25<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Aquinas had something to say about that. (&#8220;Summa Theologica,&#8221; First Part, <a href=\"http:\/\/dhspriory.org\/thomas\/summa\/FP\/FP061.html\">Question 61<\/a>, via dhspriory.org)<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the possibility that we have neighbors; people with bodies, like us, but not human. Or maybe we don&#8217;t. Either way, as Walt Kelly&#8217;s Porky Pine said, &#8220;it&#8217;s a mighty sobering thought.&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/kic-8462852-and-strange-stars\/#mighty\">December 2, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hubblesite.org\/image\/2042\/news_release\/2007-04\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/hs-2007-04-a-print-detail-rotate90enhanced.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Some physicists say quantum mechanics makes more sense if we&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Many-worlds_interpretation\">not<\/a>, or not quite, living in the only universe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multiverse\">Multiverse<\/a> hypotheses, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schr%C3%B6dinger%27s_cat\">Schr\u00f6dinger&#8217;s cat<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/cond-mat\/0205647\">quantum gears<\/a> are topics for another post.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve learned a bit since the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PFS.HTM\">Psalms<\/a> were written, about two dozen centuries back, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psalms#Origins\">give or take<\/a> a quarter-millennium.<\/p>\n<p>Living in a universe that&#8217;s immensely bigger and older than <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/faith-the-universe-and-wisdom\/#ancient\">Ussher&#8217;s<\/a> tidy little version of a Mesopotamian model upsets some folks.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not among them. I figure part of my job is appreciating God&#8217;s creation: not telling the Almighty how it should work. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/the-minden-monster-what-killed-lucy\/#even\">September 23, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>No matter where we look, God&#8217;s creation is filled with beauty and wonders that we&#8217;re just beginning to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Paying attention to God&#8217;s work can&#8217;t hurt an informed faith.<\/p>\n<p>Truth cannot contradict truth, we&#8217;re <strong>supposed<\/strong> to be curious, and scientific discoveries are opportunities for greater admiration of God&#8217;s creation. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c3a1.htm#159\">159<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p1.htm#214\">214<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p1.htm#217\">217<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#283\">283<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#294\">294<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p5.htm#341\">341<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Everything and everyone ultimately points back to God. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PZK.HTM#NTLET.1COR.15.27\">1 Corinthians 15:27<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PZK.HTM#NTLET.1COR.15.28\">28<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#294\">294<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve talked about faith, reason, science, and getting a grip, before. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/gems-metal-and-earths-core\/#once\">January 27, 2017<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/seti-what-if\/#faith\">December 23, 2016<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/right-handedness-and-evolving-jaws\/#evolution\">October 28, 2016<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/studying-thousands-of-new-worlds\/#informed\">July 29, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"developing\"><\/a>Developing a Sense of Scale<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/humility-isnt-being-delusional\/#science\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150725-hs-2007-04-a-full_jpg-AsAGrain-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PLS.HTM#$1WI\">4<\/a><\/sup> Indeed, before you the whole universe is as a grain from a balance, or a drop of morning dew come down upon the earth.<br \/>\n&#8220;But you have mercy on all, because you can do all things; and you overlook the sins of men that they may repent.<br \/>\n&#8220;For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have made; for what you hated, you would not have fashioned.<br \/>\n&#8220;And how could a thing remain, unless you willed it; or be preserved, had it not been called forth by you?&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PLS.HTM#WISDB.WISD.11.22\">Wisdom 11:22<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PLS.HTM#WISDB.WISD.11.25\">25<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>God isn&#8217;t merely big and strong. God is &#8220;&#8230;infinite &#8230; almighty and ineffable &#8230; infinitely greater than all his works&#8230;.&#8221; (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p1.htm#202\">202<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#300\">300<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>What we&#8217;re learning about the scale of this universe doesn&#8217;t, I think, make God &#8216;more infinite.&#8217; But I think it adds emphasis to verses like these:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars that you set in place &#8211;<br \/>\n&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PG0.HTM#$1B3\">4<\/a><\/sup>What are humans that you are mindful of them, mere mortals that you care for them?<br \/>\n&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PG0.HTM#$1B4\">5<\/a><\/sup>Yet you have made them little less than a god, crowned them with glory and honor.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PG0.HTM#WISDB.PSA.8.4\">Psalms 8:4<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PG0.HTM#WISDB.PSA.8.6\">6<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/hating-people-not-an-option\/#reason\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/across_the_park___digital_matte_painting_by_jadrienc-d5nxd2h-crop-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I also think remembering who and what we are is important.
