I took those pictures of them on Wednesday. Their trip to the nativity scene ended today, Epiphany Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We read about &#8220;magi from the east&#8221; in today&#8217;s Gospel: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVB.HTM#GOSP.MAT.2.1\">Matthew 2:1<\/a> through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVB.HTM#GOSP.MAT.2.12\">12<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVB.HTM#$2VP\">1<\/a><\/sup> When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVB.HTM#$2VQ\">2<\/a><\/sup> behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,<br>&#8220;saying, &#8216;Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVB.HTM#$2VR\">3<\/a><\/sup> at its rising and have come to do him homage.'&#8221;<br>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVB.HTM#GOSP.MAT.2.1\">Matthew 2:1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVB.HTM#GOSP.MAT.2.2\">2<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Magi&#8221; is how \u03bc\u03ac\u03b3\u03bf\u03b9, m\u00e1goi, looks in my native language. That&#8217;s the Greek version of an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_Persian\">Old Persian<\/a> word that would sound something like &#8220;magus&#8221; if I tried pronouncing it. &#8220;Magus&#8221; is from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avestan\">Avestan<\/a> &#8220;magauno,&#8221; the the religious caste <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zoroaster\">Zoroaster<\/a> was born into; and don&#8217;t bother trying to remember all that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The point is that magi were astrologers, which didn&#8217;t mean what it does today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"seeking\"><\/a>Seeking Truth<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astrology_and_astronomy#Overview\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20170107-God_the_Geometer-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Folks thought that what happens in the sky affects what happens on Earth back when the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hittites#History\">Hittite<\/a> empire was a major Mediterranean power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That belief, and the very practical need for accurate calendars, made researchers who studied the stars and planets very important. I suppose today&#8217;s equivalent might be scientists from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CERN\">CERN<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The point is that when our Lord was born, astrologers had a reputation for having detailed knowledge of things that most folks had barely heard of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Astronomy and astrology were pretty much the same thing until the last few centuries.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/epiphany-sunday\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albertus_Magnus\">Albertus Magnus<\/a>, patron Saint of scientists, studied <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albertus_Magnus#Astrology\">astrology<\/a> around the time Pope <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_Honorius_III\">Honorius III<\/a> approved the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominican_Order\">Dominican<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Franciscans\">Franciscan<\/a> Orders, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Batu_Khan\">Batu Khan<\/a> ran the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_Horde\">Golden Horde<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"some\"><\/a>Some correspondences between what we see in the sky and what happens on Earth are fairly obvious, like the tides and our moon&#8217;s position. Looking for more subtle connections seemed reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until the last few centuries that more data, increasingly precise <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chronometry\">timekeeping<\/a> tech, and a whole lot of analysis showed that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astrology_and_astronomy#Historical_divergence\">astrology&#8217;s<\/a> predictive value was pretty much nil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Astrology makes a short list of bad ideas under the &#8216;divination&#8217; heading these days. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c1a1.htm#2116\">2116<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astronomy\">Astronomy<\/a>, the scientific study of what&#8217;s in Earth&#8217;s sky, is a good idea. Studying this universe, and using that knowledge, is part of being human. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2293\">2293<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2295\">2295<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like I keep saying, truth can&#8217;t contradict truth, and we&#8217;re <strong>supposed<\/strong> to be curious. This universe is filled with opportunities for greater admiration of God&#8217;s creation. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c3a1.htm#159\">159<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p1.htm#214\">214<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p1.htm#217\">217<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#283\">283<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p5.htm#341\">341<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"for\"><\/a>&#8220;For You Gentiles&#8221;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Early_Christian_Magi.JPG\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/201508ff\/20160102-800px-Early_Christian_Magi-329.JPG?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Epiphany is a big deal for folks like me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason I celebrate the Messiah&#8217;s birth, death, and resurrection, is that Jesus came for <strong>all<\/strong> nations. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW1.HTM#GOSP.MAT.28.19\">Matthew 28:19<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWF.HTM#GOSP.MAR.13.10\">Mark 13:10<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PZ4.HTM#NTLET.ROM.16.25\">Romans 16:25<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PZ4.HTM#NTLET.ROM.16.26\">26<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m a gentile, descended from folks in northwestern Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re mentioned in the other New Testament reading today: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10A.HTM#NTLET.EPH.3.2\">Ephesians 3:2<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10A.HTM#NTLET.EPH.3.3\">3a<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10A.HTM#NTLET.EPH.3.5\">5<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10A.HTM#NTLET.EPH.3.6\">6<\/a>. Here&#8217;s a longer excerpt from that chapter in Ephesians:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10A.HTM#$4LK\">1<\/a><\/sup> Because of this, I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10A.HTM#$4LL\">2<\/a><\/sup> (Jesus) for you Gentiles &#8211;<\/p><p>&#8220;if, as I suppose, you have heard of the stewardship <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10A.HTM#$4LM\">3<\/a><\/sup> of God&#8217;s grace that was given to me for your benefit,<\/p><p>&#8220;(namely, that) the mystery <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10A.HTM#$4LN\">4<\/a><\/sup> was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly earlier.<\/p><p>&#8220;When you read this you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,<\/p><p>&#8220;which was not made known to human beings in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit,<\/p><p>&#8220;that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.&#8221;<br>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10A.HTM#NTLET.EPH.3.2\">Ephesians 3:2<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10A.HTM#NTLET.EPH.3.3\">3a<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That&#8217;s<\/strong> why Epiphany and the magi<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/epiphany-sunday\/#3\">3<\/a><\/sup> are a big deal for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I keep saying this, too: the Catholic Church is pretty much the opposite of an exclusive club. We&#8217;re literally catholic, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catholic_(term)\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03bf\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>, universal: a united and diverse people, embracing all cultures and all times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re doing what our Lord told us to do, just before leaving. We&#8217;re told that creating and enjoying art is part of being human. Like anything else we do, art can be misused: but it&#8217;s a basically good thing. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/art-truth-and-reflecting\/#artists\">July 17, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don&#8217;t worship statues, pictures, Mary, or anyone other than God: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c1a1.htm#2112\">2112<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c1a1.htm#2114\">2114<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do, however, recognize that some of us have done a remarkably good job of following our Lord:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;<strong>VENERATION (OF SAINTS):<\/strong> Showing devotion and respect to Mary, the Apostles, and the martyrs, who were viewed as faithful witnesses to faith in Jesus Christ. Later, veneration was given to those who led a life of prayer and self\u2013denial in giving witness to Christ, whose virtues were recognized and publicly proclaimed in their canonization as saints (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a9p3.htm#828\">828<\/a>). Such veneration is often extended to the relics or remains of those recognized as saints; indeed, to many sacred objects and images.
