The readings still aren&#8217;t particularly &#8216;Christmassy.&#8217;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVK.HTM#$30B\">2<\/a><\/sup> When John heard in prison <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVK.HTM#$30C\">3<\/a><\/sup> of the works of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to him<br \/>\n&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVK.HTM#$30D\">4<\/a><\/sup> with this question, &#8216;Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8220;Jesus said to them in reply, &#8216;Go and tell John what you hear and see:<br \/>\n&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVK.HTM#$30E\">5<\/a><\/sup> the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.<br \/>\n&#8220;And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.&#8217; &#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVK.HTM#GOSP.MAT.11.4\">Matthew 11:4<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVK.HTM#GOSP.MAT.11.6\">6<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Our Lord balanced that rebuke with a reminder of the Baptist&#8217;s great function in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVK.HTM#GOSP.MAT.11.7\">Matthew 11:7<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVK.HTM#GOSP.MAT.11.15\">15<\/a>, and a complaint about folks who wouldn&#8217;t listen to John <strong>or<\/strong> Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVK.HTM#GOSP.MAT.11.16\">Matthew 11:16<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVK.HTM#GOSP.MAT.11.19\">19<\/a> \u2014 and perhaps a reminder that telling the truth can get a mixed response.<\/p>\n<p>Which reminds me: John the Baptist got himself executed for pretty much the same reasons that got Saints <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_More\">Thomas More<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Fisher\">John Fisher<\/a> killed. I&#8217;ve talked about Henry VIII, laws, and Chickenman, before. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/not-going-native\/#crime\">August 14, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>John&#8217;s question makes sense, since he thought our Lord would be imposing fiery judgment. We heard about that last week, in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.10\">Matthew 3:10<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.12\">12<\/a>. My guess is that John was right about an impending fiery judgment, but wrong about its timing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;the work of each will come to light, for the Day <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PZ8.HTM#$4AB\">7<\/a><\/sup> will disclose it. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire (itself) will test the quality of each one&#8217;s work.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PZ8.HTM#NTLET.1COR.3.13\">1 Corinthians 3:13<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think the Final Judgment is &#8216;imminent&#8217; \u2014 from the Almighty&#8217;s viewpoint. Like I&#8217;ve said, <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/tides-and-our-moons-origin\/#living\">God thinks big<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PLS.HTM#$1WI\">4<\/a><\/sup> Indeed, before you the whole universe is as a grain from a balance, or a drop of morning dew come down upon the earth.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PLS.HTM#WISDB.WISD.11.22\">Wisdom 11:22<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P129.HTM#$4Z0\">6<\/a><\/sup> <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P129.HTM#$4Z1\">7<\/a><\/sup> But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P129.HTM#CATHL.2PET.3.8\">2 Peter 3:8<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be getting back to that.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"comets\"><\/a>Comets, Normans, and Spaceships<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/last-judgment-still-pending\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20150124-nq100503-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"biblethumping\"><\/a>Bible-thumping Christians aren&#8217;t the only folks who predict apocalyptic events that don&#8217;t happen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/earth-overshoot-day-and-pollinators\/#comets\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20141022-LUND_1857_Comet_Encounter-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Observational_history_of_comets#Early_observations_and_thought\">Comets<\/a> were a perennial favorite for doomsayers. Folks seeing something big and new moving across the sky figured it couldn&#8217;t possibly be good news.<\/p>\n<p>Unless they were <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bayeux_Tapestry#Events_depicted_in_the_tapestry\">Normans<\/a>, who saw a harbinger of doom, and maybe figured it was a good time to invade England, since <strong>someone&#8217;s<\/strong> kingdom would fall, and that&#8217;s another topic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edmond_Halley\">Edmond Halley<\/a> wasn&#8217;t the only one tracking comets after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tycho_Brahe\">Tycho Brahe<\/a> demonstrated that they weren&#8217;t odd clouds. But he&#8217;s the one who noticed that comets observed in 1531, 1607, and 1682, followed pretty much the same track.<\/p>\n<p>He figured it was the same comet, and worked out when it&#8217;d show up next. A bunch of other folks fine-tuned his math, and sure enough: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Halley%27s_Comet\">Halley&#8217;s Comet<\/a> showed up on December 25, 1758 \u2014 not quite when predicted, but close.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Halley's_Comet#Structure_and_composition\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150709-Halley_Giotto-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>The European Space Agency sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giotto_(spacecraft)\">ship<\/a> to fly by Halley&#8217;s Comet, landed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rosetta_(spacecraft)\">another<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/67P\/Churyumov%E2%80%93Gerasimenko\">67P\/C-G<\/a>, and that&#8217;s yet another topic.<\/p>\n<p>Then there was the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Comet_of_1556\">Great Comet of 1556<\/a>. Emperor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_V,_Holy_Roman_Emperor#Abdications_and_later_life\">Charles V<\/a> saw it, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Comet_of_1556#Charles_V_comet\">said<\/a> &#8220;By this dread sign my fates do summon me,&#8221; abdicated, and entered a monastery. Or maybe he quit because of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_V,_Holy_Roman_Emperor#Abdications_and_later_life\">gout<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These days we call the Great Comet of 1556 C\/1556 D1. It might be the one seen in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Comet_of_1264\">1264<\/a>, or maybe not. Like I keep saying, there&#8217;s lots more to learn.<\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward to 1857. Someone, somewhere, said that the Charles V Comet was coming back: and would destroy Earth on <a href=\"http:\/\/cdnc.ucr.edu\/cgi-bin\/cdnc?a=d&amp;d=SDU18570509.2.17\">June 13, 1857<\/a>. That&#8217;s what the news said, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The story probably sold quite a few newspapers, gave at least one cartoonist something to work with, and nearly resulted in a suicide. The <a href=\"http:\/\/images.sciencesource.com\/preview\/13559555\/BQ3349.html\">comet<\/a> didn&#8217;t show up, we&#8217;re still here, journalists still file imaginative reports, and that&#8217;s yet again another topic.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/jesus-and-expectations\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward again, to the days of my youth \u2014 which I don&#8217;t miss. Mass starvation and assorted other catastrophes didn&#8217;t happen in the 1970s and &#8217;80s, but the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Population_Bomb\">Ehrlichs&#8217;<\/a> reprise of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malthusianism\">Malthusian<\/a> assumptions is still popular in some circles.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"few\"><\/a>A Few Fizzled Judgment Day Predictions<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hippolytus_of_Rome\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150124-Hippolytus_martyrdom-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Hippolytus of Rome said the Second Coming would happen in the year <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hippolytus_of_Rome#Eschatology\">500<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He died a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/07360c.htm\">martyr<\/a> more than two centuries shy of his spurious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/Parousia\">Parousia<\/a>. He&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/benedict_xvi\/audiences\/2010\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_aud_20100811_en.html\">Saint Hippolytus of Rome<\/a> now. I gather that his feast day is some time in August.<\/p>\n<p>Saints are canonized for their heroic virtue, not for being spot-on accurate. Preferring death to denying our Lord is a short, painful, way to display that virtue. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a9p3.htm#828\">828<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a8.htm#2473\">2473<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>A messy death doesn&#8217;t guarantee Sainthood, martyrdom still happens, many Saints died of natural causes, and that&#8217;s yet another bunch of topics, for another post or three.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_dates_predicted_for_apocalyptic_events\">Wikipedia<\/a> has a (very) partial list of fizzled Judgment Day predictions. There was an impressive cluster around the year 1000: possibly, as <a href=\"http:\/\/dilbert.com\/strip\/1994-03-25\">Scott Adams<\/a> suggested, because folks assume that God uses a base 10 counting system, and likes round numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Emanuel Swedenborg was right about what we call the nebular hypothesis. I mentioned that Friday. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/tides-and-our-moons-origin\/#living\">December 9, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Swedenborg also published &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swedenborgdigitallibrary.org\/contets\/LJ.html\">The Last Judgment and Babylon Destroyed&#8230;.<\/a>&#8221; in 1758: announcing that the Last Judgment had happened in 1757 \u2014 &#8220;in the <a href=\"http:\/\/smallcanonsearch.com\/read.php?book=lj&amp;section=45\">spiritual world<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I give him points for originality.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"being\"><\/a>Being Prepared<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/last-judgment-still-pending\/#fizzled\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/d243fa307370012ee3c400163e41dd5b-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>All that does not, I think, show that Christianity is silly.<\/p>\n<p>It does, I also think, show that humans don&#8217;t change much as the millennia roll by. Also that trying to second-guess God the Father is a waste of time, at best.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVX.HTM#$38U\">21<\/a><\/sup> &#8216;But of that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVX.HTM#$38V\">22<\/a><\/sup> but the Father alone. &#8230;<br \/>\n&#8220;&#8230; So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVX.HTM#GOSP.MAT.24.36\">Matthew 24:36<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVX.HTM#GOSP.MAT.24.44\">44<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Therefore, stay awake, <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVY.HTM#$397\">5<\/a><\/sup> for you know neither the day nor the hour.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVY.HTM#GOSP.MAT.25.13\">Matthew 25:13<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; &#8216;But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.<br \/>\n&#8220;Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWF.HTM#GOSP.MAR.13.32\">Mark 13:32<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWF.HTM#GOSP.MAR.13.33\">33<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWV.HTM#$3MH\">8<\/a><\/sup> &#8216;Gird your loins and light your lamps &#8230;<br \/>\n&#8220;&#8230; You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.&#8217; &#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWV.HTM#GOSP.LUK.12.35\">Luke 12:35<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWV.HTM#GOSP.LUK.12.40\">40<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That works for me.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got my hands full, dealing with my own jobs, and am more than willing to let the top brass handle &#8216;big picture&#8217; decisions. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/numbers-and-nero\/#as\">November 8, 2016<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/last-judgment-still-pending\/#big\">August 7, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>As far as I&#8217;m concerned, our orders haven&#8217;t changed, our Lord said that he&#8217;d be back, and we&#8217;ve still got work to do. If it had been anybody else, we would not still be waiting and working, two millennia later. But Jesus isn&#8217;t anybody else. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/advent-and-being-prepared\/#move\">November 27, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Where was I? John the Baptist, Jesus, comets, predictions, getting a grip. Right.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t remember what the book was about, or who wrote it, but one chapter included a simple timeline and this question \u2014<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Before you do something bad, consider this: How long do you plan to be dead?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m pretty sure the author was making the usual <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carpe_diem\">carpe diem<\/a> argument, which makes sense. So does memento mori. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/different-sorts-of-dead\/#memento\">November 11, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>But I took the point differently. Here&#8217;s my version of the timeline:<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"these\"><\/a>&#8220;These Few Years Among the Days of Eternity&#8221;<\/h4>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/201508ff\/Timeline20130924-20150812.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p>For good or ill, I&#8217;ll never die: not permanently. I&#8217;ve got another few seconds, years, or decades. Then I&#8217;ll experience physical death, which I&#8217;m not looking forward to; and a final performance review we call the particular judgment. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a12.htm#1020\">1020<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a12.htm#1022\">1022<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Then I&#8217;ll be with our Lord for eternity: or not. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a12.htm#1023\">1023<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a12.htm#1050\">1050<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>What happens is up to me: what I do now, and what I decide at my particular judgment.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody&#8217;s dragged, kicking and screaming, into Heaven. If I decide that I&#8217;d rather not act like a rational creature, I can opt out of Heaven. It&#8217;s my decision. It&#8217;d be a daft one, but it is possible.
