The photo, from a Reddit post, was taken on I-75 in Florida back in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had pretty much the same display on I-94 near my town earlier this year. That billboard advertised &#8216;Heaven or Hell&#8217; the last time I drove by, probably for the same group.<\/p>\n<p>I appreciate their concern for the souls of travelers, but not their apparent insistence that salvation depends on rejecting what we&#8217;re learning about God&#8217;s creation.<\/p>\n<p>I think that God is large and in charge, and creating a universe which follows knowable physical laws. This universe is changing: in a &#8220;state of journeying&#8221; toward perfection. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p3.htm#268\">268<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#279\">279<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#299\">299<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#301\">301<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#308\">308<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve talked about evolution, Ussher, and why I don&#8217;t cry out &#8220;<strong>let the smiting begin<\/strong>&#8221; before. But we&#8217;ve known for generations that this world has changed, a lot, since it began.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"asking\"><\/a>Asking Questions<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocomics.com\/nonsequitur\/2012\/10\/15\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/nq121015-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Faith and science get along fine, or should.<\/p>\n<p>God gave us brains, pretty good ones. I am quite certain that using them does <strong>not<\/strong> offend God. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c3a1.htm#159\">159<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The Catholic version of faith is a willing and conscious &#8220;assent to the whole truth that God has revealed.&#8221; (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c3a1.htm#142\">142<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c3a1.htm#150\">150<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s pretty much the opposite of rejecting reality. Embracing truth is part of my faith.<\/p>\n<p>A thirst for truth and happiness is written into each of us. Looking for truth and happiness should lead us to God. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#27\">27<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"we\"><\/a>We&#8217;re created in the image of God, rational creatures whose nature includes curiosity. We&#8217;re &#8220;called to a personal relationship with God,&#8221; and can learn something of God by studying God&#8217;s creation. I think accepting our increasing knowledge as opportunities for admiration of God&#8217;s work makes sense. Part of our job is taking care of this world. Learning about the universe, and applying that knowledge, is part of our job. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/brain-implants-and-rewired-monkeys\/#dominion\">November 18, 2016<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/bulldogs-transgenics-and-a-robot\/#tampering\">August 5, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"living\"><\/a>Living With Reality, and Loving It<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/faith-the-universe-and-wisdom\/#ancient\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/PIA17569-GodThinksBig-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>We&#8217;ve known that the universe is big, old, and changeable, for millennia:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Of old you laid the earth&#8217;s foundations; the heavens are the work of your hands.<br \/>\n&#8220;They perish, but you remain; they all wear out like a garment; Like clothing you change them and they are changed,<br \/>\n&#8220;but you are the same, your years have no end.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PIM.HTM#WISDB.PSA.102.26\">Psalms 102:26<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PIM.HTM#WISDB.PSA.102.28\">28<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<sup><a>4<\/a><\/sup> Indeed, before you the whole universe is as a grain from a balance, or a drop of morning dew come down upon the earth.<br \/>\n&#8220;But you have mercy on all, because you can do all things; and you overlook the sins of men that they may repent.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PLS.HTM#WISDB.WISD.11.22\">Wisdom 11:22<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PLS.HTM#WISDB.WISD.11.23\">23<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We&#8217;re learning that it&#8217;s <strong>really<\/strong> big and old.<\/p>\n<p>Folks like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hildegard_of_Bingen\">Hildegard of Bingen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albertus_Magnus\">Albertus Magnus<\/a>, both Saints, were changing natural philosophy into science around the time merchants in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/L%C3%BCbeck#The_Hanseatic_city\">L\u00fcbeck<\/a> were setting up the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hanseatic_League#History\">Hanseatic League<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A few centuries later, folks like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolaus_Copernicus\">Copernicus<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolas_Steno#Paleontology\">Nicolas Steno<\/a> added to our knowledge of the universe. &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_revolutionibus_orbium_coelestium\">De revolutionibus orbium coelestium<\/a>&#8221; got mixed up in post-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protestant_Reformation\">1517<\/a> European politics, and that&#8217;s another topic.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/tides-and-our-moons-origin\/#3\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emanuel_Swedenborg#New_direction_of_studies_ahead_of_his_time\">Emanuel Swedenborg<\/a> outlined a cosmology that included part of what we call the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nebular_hypothesis#History\">nebular hypothesis<\/a> in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/principiaorfirst01swedrich\">The Principia<\/a>.&#8221; (1734)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Immanuel_Kant#Early_work\">Immanuel Kant<\/a> published a more detailed speculation in 1755, and so did <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierre-Simon_Laplace#Books\">Pierre-Simon Laplace<\/a> a few decades later. We <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nebular_hypothesis#Current_issues\">don&#8217;t know<\/a> exactly how the process works. But the nebular hypotheses is still the model that fits what we&#8217;ve been observing.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve found <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Molecular_cloud\">molecular clouds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protostar\">protostars<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protoplanetary_disk\">protoplanetary disks<\/a>; all of which look and act as predicted by Swedenborg, Kant, and all. Pretty much, anyway. We&#8217;ve fine-tuned the math a <strong>lot<\/strong> in the last few centuries.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><a name=\"when\"><\/a><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">1. <\/span>When Planets Go Splat!<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/astronomynow.com\/2016\/11\/01\/did-early-earth-spin-on-its-side\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20161205-formation_of_the_Moon_944x708-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">(From Robin Canup, SwRI; via Astronomy Now, used w\/o permission.)<\/span><br \/>\n(&#8220;The giant-impact theory suggests that the Moon formed out of the debris left over from a collision between Earth and an astronomical body the size of Mars&#8230;.&#8221;<br \/>\n(Astronomy Now))<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/astronomynow.com\/2016\/11\/01\/did-early-earth-spin-on-its-side\/\">Did early Earth spin on its side?<\/a>&#8221;<br \/>\nSETI Institute, Astronomy Now (November 1, 2016)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;New theoretical modelling of the ancient history of the Earth and the Moon suggests that the giant collision that spawned our natural satellite may have left Earth spinning very fast, and with its spin axis highly tilted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Computer simulations of what followed the collision, sometimes referred to as the &#8216;big whack,&#8217; show that following this event, and as the young Moon&#8217;s orbit was getting bigger, the Earth lost much of its spin as well gained a nearly upright orientation with respect to the ecliptic. The simulations give new insight into the question of whether planets with big moons are more likely to have moderate climates and life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; &#8216;Despite smart people working on this problem for fifty years, we&#8217;re still discovering surprisingly basic things about the earliest history of our world,&#8217; says Matija Cuk a scientist at the SETI Institute and lead researcher for the simulations. &#8216;It&#8217;s quite humbling.&#8217;&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We&#8217;ve personified the moon as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khonsu\">Khonsu<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ay_Ata\">Ay Ata<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phoebe_(mythology)\">Phoebe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chang%27e\">Chang&#8217;e<\/a>, and that&#8217;s yet another topic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edmond_Halley\">Edmond Halley<\/a> generally gets credit for drawing attention, in 1695, to a progressive change in predicted lunar eclipses.<\/p>\n<p>Folks like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Dunthorne#Acceleration_of_the_Moon\">Richard Dunthorne<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J%C3%A9r%C3%B4me_Lalande\">J\u00e9r\u00f4me Lalande<\/a> confirmed that something odd was happening. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierre-Simon_Laplace\">Laplace<\/a> added to the mix, so did a bunch of other scientists, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lunar_Laser_Ranging_experiment\">Lunar Laser Ranging experiment<\/a> has been giving us more exact data since July 21, 1969.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/tides-and-our-moons-origin\/#4\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Researching this post, I learned that some folks don&#8217;t like what&#8217;s happening to Earth&#8217;s moon. Apparently they say it can&#8217;t be doing what it&#8217;s doing, because the Bible doesn&#8217;t say so. I&#8217;m sure they&#8217;re sincere. I&#8217;m also quite sure that they&#8217;re wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Like I keep saying, I&#8217;m a Christian and a Catholic. I take the Bible, Sacred Scripture, very seriously. But I don&#8217;t assume that the Bible is a science textbook, and I do prefer taking reality &#8216;as is.&#8217;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/tides-and-our-moons-origin\/#5\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"tidal\"><\/a>Tidal Acceleration and the Leap Second<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Blue_Marble\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150721-800px-The_Earth_seen_from_Apollo_17-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>It wasn&#8217;t until the mid-19th century that astronomers decided that their observations and math were right.<\/p>\n<p>Earth&#8217;s days were getting slightly longer, our moon&#8217;s orbit was getting slightly larger, and the process had been going on for a very long time.<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia has a mercifully-math-free discussion of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tidal_acceleration\">tidal acceleration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The gist of it is that Earth&#8217;s rotation puts the ocean&#8217;s tidal bulge slightly ahead of the Earth-moon line. This transfers angular momentum \u2014 pulls on the moon \u2014 slowing Earth&#8217;s daily spin, and boosting the moon into a higher orbit.<\/p>\n<p>The effects are negligible over a human lifetime, unless you&#8217;re one of the folks who maintain the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coordinated_Universal_Time\">UTC<\/a> \u2014 there&#8217;s a story<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/tides-and-our-moons-origin\/#6\">6<\/a><\/sup> behind that acronym \u2014 clocks. Earth&#8217;s drift away from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Atomic_Time\">International Atomic Time<\/a> is why they added the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leap_second\">leap second<\/a> in 1972.<\/p>\n<p>Earth&#8217;s day and our moon&#8217;s orbital period would eventually be the same, with one side of Earth always facing the moon. If, that is, our sun wasn&#8217;t slowly getting warmer. The moon would have moved outward smoothly along a path that slowly changed from the equatorial plane to the &#8216;ecliptic&#8217; plane, defined by Earth&#8217;s orbit around the sun. Its orbit lies unusually far away from Earth, with a surprisingly large orbital tilt. Planetary scientists have struggled to piece together a scenario that accounts for these and other related characteristics of the Earth-moon system.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A new research paper, based on numerical models of the moon&#8217;s explosive formation and the evolution of the Earth-moon system, comes closer to tying up all the loose ends than any other previous explanation. The work, published in the October 31, 2016 Advance Online edition of the journal Nature, suggests that the impact that formed the moon also caused calamitous changes to Earth&#8217;s rotation and the tilt of its spin axis&#8230;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The U. of Maryland piece ends with Douglas Hamilton&#8217;s sensibly-cautious view of what the team accomplished:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;&#8217;There are many potential paths from the moon&#8217;s formation to the Earth-moon system we see today. We&#8217;ve identified a few of them, but there are sure to be other possibilities,&#8217; [University of Maryland&#8217;s Douglas] Hamilton said. &#8216;What we have now is a model that is more probable and works more cleanly than previous attempts. We think this is a significant improvement that gets us closer to what actually happened.&#8217; &#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2016\/11\/161101102656.htm\">University of Maryland<\/a>, Science Daily)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We&#8217;ve come a long way since <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giant-impact_hypothesis#History\">1898<\/a>, when George Darwin<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/tides-and-our-moons-origin\/#8\">8<\/a><\/sup> said that Earth and Earth&#8217;s moon might have started as a single rapidly-spinning body. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Centrifugal_force\">Centrifugal force<\/a> could have caused the Earth\/Moon to split.<\/p>\n<p>The idea made sense, and fit what scientists were learning about changes in our moon&#8217;s orbit. One of my high school textbooks included the &#8216;fission&#8217; explanation for the moon&#8217;s formation, among others. It said the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Origin_of_the_Moon#Fission\">Pacific Ocean<\/a> could be a scar left by the event.<\/p>\n<p>George Darwin couldn&#8217;t get his math to bring the early moon back to Earth&#8217;s surface. But the fission idea, and suggestions that Earth <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Origin_of_the_Moon#Capture\">captured<\/a> the moon, looked better than many others until 1946.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s when Harvard&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reginald_Aldworth_Daly\">Reginald Aldworth Daly<\/a> produced math that said a whacking great impact could have resulted in today&#8217;s Earth and moon.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"plot\"><\/a>The Plot Thickens<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Formation_and_evolution_of_the_Solar_System#Pre-solar_nebula\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/M42proplyds-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>The story gets a bit complicated at that point, partly because scientists have been on a steep learning curve over the last few decades.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s models for planetary formation, based on what we&#8217;ve been observing, say that collisions of planet-size bodies were very likely in the early Solar System.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/tides-and-our-moons-origin\/#9\">9<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if I like, or dislike, the idea of the early Solar System playing bumper cars with planets. But what I think doesn&#8217;t matter.<\/p>\n<p>As I&#8217;ve said before, often, my preferences don&#8217;t affect reality. Back when I was doing time in academia, it&#8217;d have been called the geology department.<\/p>\n<p>Back then, folks who &#8216;believed in&#8217; flying saucers were making it hard for scientists to discuss what we call exobiology and astrobiology without getting labeled as crackpots.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/tides-and-our-moons-origin\/#10\">10<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>That was then, this is now, and the UC Davis piece says that Stewart&#8217;s former postdoctoral fellow, Matija \u0106uk, is &#8220;now a scientist at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>About SETI, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, I don&#8217;t &#8216;believe in&#8217; extraterrestrial life, or extraterrestrial intelligence. As of this week, I don&#8217;t know whether or not we have neighbors. Earth is the densest planet in the Solar System, the only one with readily-observable liquid water on the surface, and still the only planet known to support life.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/tides-and-our-moons-origin\/#11\">11<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>That could change, though. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kepler-452b\">Kepler-452b<\/a> isn&#8217;t quite &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-33641648\">Earth 2.0<\/a>.&#8217; We haven&#8217;t found an exact <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earth_analog\">Earth analog<\/a> yet.<\/p>\n<p>But the <a href=\"http:\/\/exoplanetarchive.ipac.caltech.edu\/\">NASA Exoplanet Archive&#8217;s<\/a> list of 3,431 planets circling other stars include some intriguing places \u2014 like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kepler-62f\">Kepler-62f<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gliese_667_Cc\">Gliese 667 Cc<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proxima_Centauri_b\">Proxima Centauri b<\/a>. We&#8217;ve even found planetary systems that haven&#8217;t quite formed yet.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"finding\"><\/a>Finding &#8220;Wonderful Things&#8221;<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-29932609\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160321ff\/20141110_78796825_hltau_nrao-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Some protoplanetary disks, like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HL_Tauri\">HL Tauri&#8217;s<\/a>, are close enough for astronomers to observe. HL Tauri&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almaobservatory.org\/en\/press-room\/press-releases\/771-revolutionary-alma-image-reveals-planetary-genesis\">disk<\/a> is big, almost three times as large as Neptune&#8217;s orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists weren&#8217;t expecting to see evidence of planets forming in such a young star&#8217;s disk, so there&#8217;s more to learn: much more. I&#8217;d be disappointed if it seemed that we finally had all the answers about this universe.<\/p>\n<p>As it is, I think we&#8217;re in the process of learning what some of the questions are. We live in a universe filled with wonders, a cosmic puzzle collection that we&#8217;ve barely started solving.<\/p>\n<p>What we learn over the next decade, century, millennium, and beyond, will almost certainly upset some folks. People are like that, but not all people. A person might think that we&#8217;d call it CUT, or TUC. But some folks who set it up spoke French, others spoke English, and there&#8217;s a history going back at least to the and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norman_conquest_of_England\">Norman Conquest<\/a>, and that&#8217;s \u2014 another topic.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it&#8217;s abbreviated as UTC, instead of TUC or CUT, because English speakers originally proposed CUT, while French speakers said it should be TUC. Folks finally settled on UTC, an acronym which would be equally acceptable \u2014 or disliked \u2014 by both parties.<\/p>\n<p>My opinion is that we should call it &#8220;ET,&#8221; for Earth Time, but it&#8217;s probably too early for that. Besides, quite a few folks probably still remember that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E.T._the_Extra-Terrestrial\">movie<\/a> and there&#8217;s that long-running <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Entertainment_Tonight\">television show<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers use <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terrestrial_Time\">Terrestrial Time<\/a>, which I think is a step in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>UTC is based on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Atomic_Time#Operation\">International Atomic Time<\/a> \u2014 we call it TAI, of all things \u2014 a time standard set by the weighted average of over 400 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atomic_clock\">atomic clocks<\/a> in more than 50 laboratories at various spots at or near Earth&#8217;s surface \u2014 coordinated by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Global_Positioning_System\">GPS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Two-way_satellite_time_and_frequency_transfer\">two-way satellite time and frequency transfer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Telecommunication_Union\">International Telecommunication Union<\/a>, a United Nations agency involved with information and communication technologies, recommended today&#8217;s UTC setup.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re still using leap seconds to keep <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Universal_Time#Versions\">UT1<\/a>, the most commonly-used version of UTC, within 0.9 seconds of Solar time at a virtual point on Earth&#8217;s surface.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, Earth Time may be defined as something other than where the sun is, relative to a spot on an island off the European coast \u2014 or maybe not. Our current setup puts the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Date_Line\">International Date Line<\/a> near the middle of this planet&#8217;s largest body of water: which is convenient.<\/p>\n<p><sup><a name=\"7\"><\/a>7<\/sup> <strong>If<\/strong> our current educated guesses are spot-on accurate, Earth&#8217;s oceans will start evaporating about 1,000,000,000 years from now. By then, we&#8217;ll have found out whether <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WR_104\">WR 104<\/a> is aimed at us, and probably will have deflected several &#8216;extinction event&#8217; asteroids. I suspect there&#8217;ll be a lively debate about whether to move Earth, adjust our sun, or evacuate this planet. That&#8217;s assuming we&#8217;re still interested in such things.
