Not in the &#8216;presents wrapped under the tree&#8217; sense.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#$2W1\">1<\/a><\/sup> <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#$2W2\">2<\/a><\/sup> In those days John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea.<br \/>\n&#8220;(and) saying, &#8216;Repent, <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#$2W3\">3<\/a><\/sup> for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!&#8217; &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#$2W7\">7<\/a><\/sup> coming to his baptism, he said to them, &#8216;You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?<br \/>\n&#8220;Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance&#8230;..&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.1\">Matthew 3:1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.2\">2<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.7\">7<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.8\">8<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a name=\"well\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Josephology\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20161202-506px-Guido_Reni_042-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>We&#8217;ll be getting to the familiar &#8220;Christmas story&#8221; two weeks from now. That&#8217;ll be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVA.HTM#GOSP.MAT.1.18\">Matthew 1:18<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVA.HTM#GOSP.MAT.1.24\">24<\/a>, when Joseph learns that he&#8217;s involved in a very special mission. About that, apparently Joseph didn&#8217;t try to talk his way out of the assignment.<\/p>\n<p>Moses, in the &#8216;burning bush&#8217; interview, said &#8220;but&#8221; three times \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P1K.HTM#PENT.EXO.3.11\">Exodus 3:11<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P1K.HTM#PENT.EXO.3.13\">13<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P1L.HTM#PENT.EXO.4.1\">4:1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He said he wasn&#8217;t much of a talker in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P1L.HTM#PENT.EXO.4.10\">Exodus 4:10<\/a>; and asked God to send someone, anyone, else in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P1L.HTM#PENT.EXO.4.13\">Exodus 4:13<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He got stuck with the job, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Isaiah wasn&#8217;t exactly thrilled at getting special attention, either. Jeremiah tried to talk his way out of being a prophet, and engaged in a frank discussion or two about his assignment later on; and that&#8217;s another topic. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PNP.HTM#PROPHB.ISA.6.5\">Isaiah 6:5<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PPF.HTM#PROPHB.JER.1.6\">Jeremiah 1:6<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PPY.HTM#PROPHB.JER.20.7\">20:7<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PPY.HTM#PROPHB.JER.20.18\">18<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PPT.HTM#PROPHB.JER.15.18\">15:18<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"salvation\"><\/a>Salvation and Vipers<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_the_Baptist#In_Matthew\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20161202-Mattia_Preti_-_San_Giovanni_Battista_Predicazione-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>John the Baptist is called &#8220;the Baptist&#8221; partly because he baptized Jesus. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.13\">Matthew 3:13<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.17\">17<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW3.HTM#GOSP.MAR.1.9\">Mark 1:9<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW3.HTM#GOSP.MAR.1.11\">11<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>John balked when Jesus wanted to be baptized, and for good reason.<\/p>\n<p>He <strong>knew<\/strong> who \u2014 and what \u2014 our Lord is. The Son of God did not need baptism for himself. Our Lord&#8217;s baptism was a gesture &#8220;to fulfill all righteousness.&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.13\">Matthew 3:13<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.15\">15<\/a>; Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1224)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Salvation comes from God alone,&#8221; but baptism is important, too. (Catechism, 169, 620, 1213-1274)<\/p>\n<p>So is recognizing that I need to be saved, and that gets me back to St. John the Baptist and vipers. He wasn&#8217;t telling the &#8220;brood of vipers&#8221; to come back with baskets of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/produce\">produce<\/a>. Folks were being baptized &#8220;as they acknowledged their sins.&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#GOSP.MAT.3.6\">Matthew 3:6<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"whole\"><\/a>&#8220;The Whole Law and the Prophets&#8221;<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/mercy-still-practicing\/#mercy\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/201508ff\/20160312-792px-Jesus_und_Ehebrecherin-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVC.HTM#$2W7\">footnote<\/a> explains that Pharisees were huge fans of the law. Scribes, experts in the law, were generally Pharisees.<\/p>\n<p>The Sadducees were priestly aristocrats, mostly found in Jerusalem. They were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/gung+ho\">gung ho<\/a> about the law, too: but only what&#8217;s in the Pentateuch. They didn&#8217;t like the rest.<\/p>\n<p>No wonder Pharisees <strong>and<\/strong> Sadducees freaked when Jesus showed up.<\/p>\n<p>Our Lord boiled &#8220;the whole law and the prophets&#8221; down to &#8216;love God and your neighbor.&#8217; We see that in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#GOSP.MAT.22.35\">Matthew 22:35<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#GOSP.MAT.22.40\">40<\/a>. Jesus didn&#8217;t show them the deference they&#8217;d gotten used to, either. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVP.HTM#GOSP.MAT.16.1\">Matthew 16:1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVP.HTM#GOSP.MAT.16.4\">4<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWE.HTM#GOSP.MAR.12.17\">Mark 12:17<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWE.HTM#GOSP.MAR.12.24\">Mark 12:24<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m guessing that not all Pharisees and Sadducees were clueless. Gamaliel showed good sense in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXZ.HTM#GOSP.ACT.5.38\">Acts 5:38<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXZ.HTM#GOSP.ACT.5.39\">39<\/a>, and that&#8217;s yet another topic.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"acting\"><\/a>Acting Like Truth Matters<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/trusting-feelings-within-reason\/#high\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/Bloch-SermonOnTheMount329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Matthew 7 starts with pretty good advice:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#$2Y4\">1<\/a><\/sup> <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#$2Y5\">2<\/a><\/sup> &#8220;Stop judging, that you may not be judged.<br \/>\n&#8220;For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#GOSP.MAT.7.1\">Matthew 7:1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#GOSP.MAT.7.2\">2<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus talks about false prophets and fruit in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#GOSP.MAT.7.15\">Matthew 7:15<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#GOSP.MAT.7.20\">20<\/a>, winding up in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#GOSP.MAT.7.21\">Matthew 7:21<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#GOSP.MAT.7.27\">27<\/a> by comparing the wisdom of building a house on a rock or on sand. That bit starts with this warning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8221; &#8216;Not everyone who says to me, &#8220;Lord, Lord,&#8221; will enter the kingdom of heaven, <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#$2YD\">10<\/a><\/sup> but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#GOSP.MAT.7.21\">Matthew 7:21<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That make sense to me. I don&#8217;t see the point in believing something is true, unless I act as if it matters. It&#8217;s like James<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/sin-awareness-repentance\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup> wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;You believe that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and tremble.<br \/>\n&#8220;Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without works is useless?<br \/>\n&#8220;Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?<br \/>\n&#8220;You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by the works.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P11W.HTM#CATHL.JAM.2.19\">James 2:19<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P11W.HTM#CATHL.JAM.2.22\">22<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Works&#8221; is what happens when I love God, and my neighbor, as I should; and see everyone as my neighbor. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.43\">Matthew 5:43<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.44\">44<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#GOSP.MAT.22.36\">22:36<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#GOSP.MAT.22.40\">40<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWE.HTM#GOSP.MAR.12.28\">Mark 12:28<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWE.HTM#GOSP.MAR.12.31\">31<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWP.HTM#GOSP.LUK.6.31\">Luke 6:31<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.25\">10:25<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.27\">27<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.29\">29<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.37\">37<\/a>; Catechism, 2196)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"sin\"><\/a>Sin and Holy Willie<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holy_Willie's_Prayer#Analysis\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/David_Allan_The_Black_Stool-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>When I do or think something in a way that offends reason, truth, and God; or fail to act or think with love; I sin. (Catechism, 1849-1851)<\/p>\n<p>That happens more often than I like.<\/p>\n<p>When it does, I could congratulate myself that I didn&#8217;t indulge in the &#8220;drinking bouts, orgies, and the like&#8221; cited in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P105.HTM#NTLET.GAL.5.21\">Galatians 5:21<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Or I could go full <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holy_Willie's_Prayer#Analysis\">Holy Willie<\/a>, asking God to smite folks I don&#8217;t like, while glossing over my own shortcomings. That sort of sanctimonious hypocrisy is a bad idea, and I shouldn&#8217;t do it. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.21\">Matthew 5:21<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.22\">22<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVW.HTM#GOSP.MAT.23.1\">23:1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVW.HTM#GOSP.MAT.23.12\">12<\/a>; Catechism, 2262, 2468)<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I figure acknowledging that I messed up makes sense. Happily, the Church recognizes that we&#8217;re <strong>all<\/strong> sinners. And, like it says in the Apostles Creed, I believe in the forgiveness of sins. (Catechism; Chapter Three, Article 2, The Credo; 827; 976-983)<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing that I&#8217;ve sinned won&#8217;t do much good if I stop there.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;After John had been arrested, <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW3.HTM#$3CA\">8<\/a><\/sup> Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God:<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; &#8216;This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.&#8217; &#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW3.HTM#GOSP.MAR.1.14\">Mark 1:14<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PW3.HTM#GOSP.MAR.1.15\">15<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><a name=\"ongoing\"><\/a>Ongoing Inner Conversion<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sirach\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/Zentralbibliothek_Zurich_-_Alle_Weissheit_ist_bey_Gott_dem_Herrn_-_000012138-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>God is merciful, and expects us to show mercy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Like a drop of sea water, like a grain of sand, so are these few years among the days of eternity.<br \/>\n&#8220;That is why the LORD is patient with men and showers upon them his mercy.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PMK.HTM#WISDB.SIR.18.8\">Sirach 18:8<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PMK.HTM#WISDB.SIR.18.9\">9<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hear the word of the LORD, O people of Israel, for the LORD has a grievance against the inhabitants of the land: There is no fidelity, no mercy, no knowledge of God in the land.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PT4.HTM#PROPHB.HOS.4.1\">Hosea 4:1<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the judgment is merciless to one who has not shown mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P11W.HTM#CATHL.JAM.2.13\">James 2:13<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m not a particularly spectacular sinner. I haven&#8217;t robbed a bank, murdered someone, or anything like that. But my low-profile lapses in living as if love matters add up. I recognize my need for mercy.<\/p>\n<p>Getting baptized was an important first step; in my case, done while I was an infant. What I&#8217;m doing now is an ongoing inner conversion. It&#8217;s not just <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/navel-gazing\">navel-gazing<\/a>. I&#8217;m expected to live as if my repentance is real.
