(Paul Manship, 1934))<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s been 246 years since a bunch of disgruntled colonists decided that they&#8217;d had enough of transatlantic micromanagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s more behind the Declaration of Independence than that. World War II ended August 15, 1945.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/independence-day-america-and-acting-like-love-matters\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup> I was born in 1951.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a 1939 viewpoint, I&#8217;ve been living in &#8220;the world of tomorrow&#8221; all my life. It&#8217;s not been quite a streamlined as the World&#8217;s Fair version, and neither as utopian nor as apocalyptic as the predictions of dreamers and doomsayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"patriots\"><\/a>Patriots, Pigeonholes and Attitudes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/alabaster-cities-fireworks-a-condo-disaster-and-tears\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20190630ff\/20190630-439714_2007-trim-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cheez-It(r)'s 'Big Cheese' carving inspired by Mt. I think so (2007))<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe I&#8217;d be more comfortable with words like &#8220;patriot&#8221; and &#8220;patriotism&#8221; if I hadn&#8217;t grown up in the &#8217;60s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McCarthyism&#8217;s heyday was over. Some Americans wondered if unwavering faith in HUAC&#8217;s wisdom was prudent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kids were growing up in a world with tech and prosperity their parents hadn&#8217;t known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disconnects between slogans and action, ideals and attitudes, were becoming obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was in my teens when McCarthyism&#8217;s dying gasps mingled with lyrics like these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;If the mind is baffled<br>When the rules don&#8217;t fit the game,<br>Who will answer?&#8230;&#8221;<br>(&#8220;Who Will Answer?&#8221; Ed Ames (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Who_Will_Answer%3F_(song)\">1967<\/a>))<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;Go ahead and hate your neighbor<br>Go ahead and cheat a friend<br>Do it in the name of heaven<br>You can justify it in the end&#8230;.&#8221;<br>(&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lyrics.com\/lyric\/6670401\/One+Tin+Soldier\">One Tin Soldier<\/a>&#8221; Dennis Lambert, Brian Potter (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/One_Tin_Soldier\">1969<\/a>))<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;Imagine there&#8217;s no countries<br>It isn&#8217;t hard to do<br>Nothing to kill or die for<br>And no religion too<br>Imagine all the people<br>Living life in peace&#8230;.&#8221;<br>(&#8220;Imagine,&#8221; John Lennon (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imagine_%28John_Lennon_song%29\">1971<\/a>))<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn&#8217;t, and don&#8217;t, think &#8220;Imagine&#8217;s&#8221; &#8220;no religion too&#8221; will make this a better world. And that&#8217;s another topic. But I think I understand what Lennon had in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To this day, the words &#8220;patriot&#8221; and &#8220;conservative&#8221; register as &#8216;crazy person lost in yesteryearning&#8217; \u2014 along with jingoism, nativism and toxic nationalism.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/independence-day-america-and-acting-like-love-matters\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless I think about it. Which is a reason I make thinking a priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"pigeonholes\"><\/a>Pigeonholes and &#8220;the Establishment&#8221;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/independence-day-2017\/#patriotism\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170501ff\/20170703-Flag_of_the_United_States-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Flag of the United States of America.\" align=\"right\"><\/a>I don&#8217;t call myself a conservative, liberal, libertarian, or whatever: mainly because today&#8217;s sociopolitical pigeonholes and my beliefs aren&#8217;t a good match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m a Catholic, so my views on capital punishment, marriage, and staying healthy line up with liberal, conservative, undecided \u2014 and that&#8217;s yet another topic. Topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if I&#8217;m not nestled into one of today&#8217;s mainstream political pigeonholes, and am Catholic to boot, can I be a patriot?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, yes. But it depends on what the word means. I&#8217;ll take Merriam-Webster&#8217;s definition: &#8220;one who loves and supports his or her country.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/independence-day-america-and-acting-like-love-matters\/#3\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"establishment\"><\/a>&#8220;The Establishment,&#8221; Then and Now: Attitudes and Goals<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/fog-frost-feelings-and-another-washington-snafu\/#emotions\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20181226ff\/20181226-Pogo-ThePogoPapers1952-1953-trim-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"'I'd force peace right down their bloodthirsty throats.' Deacon Mushrat in Walt Kelly's Pogo. (1952)\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Back in the &#8217;60s, &#8220;the establishment,&#8221; folks who enjoyed prestige and influence, saw what has happening. They didn&#8217;t like it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some, not all, apparently decided that since what they&#8217;d been doing didn&#8217;t work \u2014 they should do it more forcefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That didn&#8217;t work either. Not the way they intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe stalwart defenders of their status quo believed they were the last true patriots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calling devotion to their opinions &#8220;patriotism&#8221; helped me associate the word with nativism, hubris, and anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I now recognize distinctions between patriotism, nationalism and jingoism. I&#8217;ve also learned to appreciate the value and risks of using labels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time passed. The upper crust of today&#8217;s establishment are around my age. Many probably shared my youthful conviction that we can do better. Maybe they still think so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trick, then and now, isn&#8217;t just thinking we can do better. It&#8217;s seeing what will work. And seeing everyone as my neighbor. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/5#48005043\">Matthew 5:43<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/5#48005044\">44<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#GOSP.MAT.7.12\">7:12<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/22#48022036\">22:36<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/22#48022040\">40<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/12#49012028\">Mark 12:28<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/12#49012031\">31<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/10#50010025\">10:25<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/10#50010027\">27<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/10#50010029\">29<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/10#50010037\">37<\/a>; Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1789)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acting like love matters is easier when my reason and emotions are in sync. But easy or hard, using my brain is a good idea. (Catechism, 1777-1782)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a Catholic, I&#8217;m obliged to do what&#8217;s possible in public life: recognizing humanity&#8217;s solidarity, and respecting authority. Within reason. (Catechism, 1778, 1915, 1897-1917, 1939-1942, 2199, 2238-2243)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeing my country&#8217;s system as the worst one possible, except for all others, is okay. Thinking that everyone should be Americans, or run their countries like ours, not so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There isn&#8217;t one &#8216;correct&#8217; form of government. Different cultures and eras have different needs, and that&#8217;s okay. (Catechism, 1915, 1957-1958)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think my country has much to offer the world. I&#8217;d rather live here than anywhere else. If that&#8217;s loving my country, then I love America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d prefer living in a world where everyone could feel that way about their homeland. (1865)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;d finally gotten away from attitudes that inspired Barralet&#8217;s and Brumidi&#8217;s &#8220;Apotheosis of Washington.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the two figures flanking &#8220;Sacred to the Memory of Washington&#8230;&#8221; seem familiar, they should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They&#8217;re traditional renderings of Lady Liberty, left; and an American Indian\/Native American, right. And their postures resemble traditional images of sleeping soldiers at Christ&#8217;s tomb.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/independence-day-america-and-acting-like-love-matters\/#4\">4<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, I have no problem with showing respect to the memory of folks like Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But imagery that suggests America&#8217;s first president is on a par with the Second Person of the Trinity seems a bit much. Can&#8217;t say that I miss the attitude that made it popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-black-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-black-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"change\"><\/a>Change Happens<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/faith-feelings-and-a-viral-video\/#values\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20160723-800px-Ganges1876-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Thomas Nast's 'The American River Ganges.' (May 8, 1875) Anti-Catholic cartoon from Harper's Weekly magazine.\" align=\"right\"><\/a>The world keeps changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of what&#8217;s happened since the &#8217;60s is an improvement. Some, in my view, isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s America isn&#8217;t just like the &#8217;60s, but I see parallels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fair fraction of Americans don&#8217;t entirely approve of the status quo. What&#8217;s worse, from today&#8217;s establishment viewpoint, change is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I very strongly suspect that&#8217;s frustrating, and probably frightening, to folks who have been near the top of the heap for the last several decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s establishment wouldn&#8217;t, most likely, notice that they&#8217;re reacting pretty much as their predecessors did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The details are different, but I see the same pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emphasis has been shifting from goals to fears. Slogans seem more like shibboleths than rallying cries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Words like &#8220;tolerance&#8221; may be following &#8220;patriotism&#8221; into dead storage. And &#8220;freedom&#8221; still means &#8220;free to agree with me&#8221; in some circles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t like political sound and fury. That&#8217;s an attitude I had in the &#8217;60s, and never lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I certainly don&#8217;t think today&#8217;s America is as good as it gets. And I remember our past too well to want a rerun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I think hope makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Change <strong>is<\/strong> happening. I also think we can do better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing better doesn&#8217;t mean dragging America back to an earlier time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if I could, I wouldn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8217;60s happened in part because so many folks had gotten fed up with the status quo. We changed because what we had wasn&#8217;t working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesteryear won&#8217;t come back<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today needs improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That leaves one direction: forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We move forward in time, no matter what we do. (June 7, 1882)\" align=\"right\"><\/a>A century after Bates wrote &#8220;America the Beautiful,&#8221; our cities \u2014 alabaster and otherwise \u2014 aren&#8217;t &#8220;undimmed by human tears.&#8221; But we&#8217;re moving in that direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re learning to accept non-English, non-Protestant Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a lesson we re-learn periodically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;ll get easier, as more Americans have &#8216;foreign&#8217; names like O&#8217;Toole and Einstein, Ichihashi and Karmarkar, Liukin and Chandrasekhar, Di Vincenzo and Pei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll have more opportunities to learn, at any rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Hair,&#8221; the &#8217;60s musical, wasn&#8217;t patriotic. Not in the Fabulous Fifties sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, I think one of its songs expressed a patriot dream of sorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;Harmony and understanding<br>Sympathy and trust abounding<br>No more falsehoods or derisions&#8230;.&#8221;<br>(&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusicals.com\/lyrics\/hair\/aquarius.htm\">Aquarius<\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hair_(musical)\">Hair<\/a>&#8221; (1967))<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A half-century later, sympathy and trust aren&#8217;t abounding. But wanting harmony and understanding still makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"working\"><\/a>Working Together<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/climate-change-whirligig-icebergs\/#not\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20190630ff\/20150218-sun_city_by_adimono-d3ilh4q-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Adimono's 'Sun City.'\" align=\"right\"><\/a>I don&#8217;t expect cities &#8220;undimmed by human tears&#8221; a century from now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d be astounded if most of humanity&#8217;s many problems have been solved in the next millennium. Or ten millennia. We&#8217;re dealing with an enormous backlog of unresolved issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Healing wounds accumulated over uncounted ages is beyond me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I can suggest that justice and charity are good ideas. So is respecting humanity&#8217;s &#8220;transcendent dignity.&#8221; The process starts in me, with an ongoing &#8220;inner conversion.&#8221; (Catechism, 1886&#8211;1889, 1928-1942, 2419-2442)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/owen-c.deviantart.com\/art\/Avenue-Eos-345921977\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170501ff\/20170603-avenue_eos_by_owen_c-d5pyb3t-detail-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Owen's 'Avenue Eos.'\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Maybe, if enough of us start acting as if love matters, we can build a better America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a better world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagining alabaster cities abounding in harmony and understanding is easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cobbling together close approximations of them won&#8217;t be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But maybe, if enough of us work together, we can lay foundations for a &#8220;&#8230;civilization of love, founded on the universal values of peace, solidarity, justice, and liberty&#8230;.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/independence-day-america-and-acting-like-love-matters\/#5\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think we can.
