Or perhaps rail against the Encased Face Mask Funny Bearded Holiday Santa Costume for Adults \u2014 sold by the pack.<\/p>\n<p>I could, but I won&#8217;t. Not much, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The Yodelling Pickle and Funny Bearded Santa Costume are real, by the way. I found them on Amazon.com this week.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/baptism-of-jesus-third-aha-of-the-season\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"christmas\"><\/a>Christmas, Culture and Yodeling Pickles<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/joy-and-shadow-free-will-and-something-silly\/#my\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20171117ff\/20171126-Edison-detail-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"'Deck the aisles with panicked shoppers....' (November 26, 2017)\" align=\"right\"><\/a>I&#8217;m no great fan of doomsayers, crepehangers and killjoys.<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;ll grant that spending above and beyond the call of reason is a bad idea. And that yodeling pickles are far less important than, say, food and shelter.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, I don&#8217;t think Archie McPhee&#8217;s Yodelling Pickle constitutes a threat to humanity; or even to American society. Not by itself. And that&#8217;s another topic.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/baptism-of-jesus-third-aha-of-the-season\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see, where was I?<\/p>\n<p>Being an American, Macy&#8217;s big parade, yodeling pickles and and not panicking. Right.<\/p>\n<p>My country&#8217;s Christmas season starts with a parade in New York City, and ends about a month later: somewhere between the day after Christmas and the following weekend.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not thrilled when the lights go out. We keep celebrating until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. That&#8217;s tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t remember anyone putting it this way, but tomorrow&#8217;s celebration marks the Christmas season&#8217;s third &#8220;aha!&#8221; moment. Recapping, briefly:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock.<br \/>\n&#8220;The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear.<br \/>\n&#8220;The angel said to them, &#8216;Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.<br \/>\n&#8220;<strong>For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/2#50002008\">Luke 2:8<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/2#50002011\">11<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,<br \/>\n&#8220;saying, <strong>&#8216;Where is the newborn king of the Jews? (ca 1886-1894) via  Online Collection of Brooklyn Museum, Wikidata, used w\/o permission\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Before 1955, we celebrated this Sunday&#8217;s feast last Sunday, as part of Epiphany: which means &#8220;aha!&#8221; \u2014 the sort of abrupt understanding that inspired Archimedes&#8217; &#8220;eureka!&#8221; and that&#8217;s yet another topic.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, responses to those &#8220;aha&#8221; moments varied.<\/p>\n<p>The shepherds followed the angel&#8217;s instructions, and paid their respects to their newborn Messiah and Lord.<\/p>\n<p>Herod ordered a mass murder.<\/p>\n<p>And John the Baptist balked. But then he followed instructions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;John tried to prevent him, saying, &#8216;I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8220;Jesus said to him in reply, &#8216;Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.&#8217; Then he allowed him.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/3#48003014\">Matthew 3:14<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/3#48003015\">15<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I can see John the Baptist&#8217;s point. He&#8217;d been &#8216;preparing the way of the Lord,&#8217; and baptizing folks as they acknowledged their sins. (<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/3#48003006\">Matthew 3:6<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>And here was the Lord: asking to be baptized. Small wonder John balked.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/baptism-of-jesus-third-aha-of-the-season\/#3\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"Jesus\"><\/a>Jesus of Nazareth and the Best News Ever<\/h4>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20210922ff\/20220105-DSC09099-658.JPG?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Our manger scene. (January 5, 2022)\"><\/p>\n<p>Briefly reviewing who&#8217;s who \u2014<\/p>\n<p>St. John the Baptist was an itinerant preacher, a prophet and pretty much the opposite of America&#8217;s slick televangelists. In appearance and lifestyle, at any rate.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;John wore clothing made of camel&#8217;s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/3#48003004\">Matthew 3:4<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The crowd he attracted was, I gather, a mixed lot: from the era&#8217;s Boston Brahmin analogs on down. And that&#8217;s yet again another topic.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/baptism-of-jesus-third-aha-of-the-season\/#4\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him<br \/>\n&#8220;and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/3#48003005\">Matthew 3:5<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/3#48003006\">6<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus of Nazareth was an itinerant preacher, too; but our Lord is also \u2014 unique.<\/p>\n<p>John&#8217;s Gospel sums it up nicely:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In the beginning was the Word,<br \/>\nand the Word was with God,<br \/>\nand the Word was God.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/1#51001001\">John 1:1<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus was and is, quite simply, God. The Son of God. Second Person in the Trinity. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0015\/__P17.HTM\">232<\/a>ff, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0015\/__P1D.HTM\">2422<\/a>ff)<\/p>\n<p>So how come Jesus needed to be baptized?<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"fulfilling\"><\/a>&#8216;Fulfilling All Righteousness&#8217;<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/the-baptism-of-jesus-and-my-kids\/#baptism\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170721ff\/20170811-600px-Rosace_cathedrale_strasbourg-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Clostridium's photo of the Strasbourg Cathedral rose window. (2008) from Wikimedia Commons, used w\/o permission\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Baptism is important. It&#8217;s one of the sacraments of Christian initiation, along with Confirmation and the Eucharist. It makes entering the kingdom of God an option for me. (Catechism, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0015\/__P3F.HTM\">1212<\/a>ff)<\/p>\n<p>Like I said, important. For me.<\/p>\n<p>But why would Jesus be baptized?<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s already the Second Person in the Trinity, so initiation isn&#8217;t an issue.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, our Lord became one of us as part of a rescue mission. By his baptism, Jesus was identifying himself with sinners: starting his public ministry with a memorable and significant event. His baptism with water also prefigured his baptism by blood; and, as our Lord said, it was a good idea \u2014 so that he would &#8220;fulfill all righteousness.&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/3#48003015\">Matthew 3:15<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0015\/__P1L.HTM\">512<\/a>ff; esp. 528, 535-537)<\/p>\n<p>Which Jesus did: by being executed.
