These behaviors inhibit people from participating on Twitter, or anywhere&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Twitter post includes a link to their &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.twitter.com\/articles\/20175050#\">Hateful conduct policy<\/a>,&#8221; and I think both are worth reading. CNET&#8217;s article focused on what Twitter was doing. The New York Times followed its editorial policy in their fifth paragraph:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;Many of Mr. Trump&#8217;s supporters also relied on a series of images \u2014 some anti-Semitic and others quietly coded as racist \u2014 to circulate hate speech on Twitter&#8230;.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/16\/technology\/twitter-adds-new-ways-to-curb-abuse-and-hate-speech.html\">The New York Times<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given the tone of the campaign, I don&#8217;t doubt that some folks who voted for Trump expressed themselves that way.<\/p>\n<p>I am sincerely glad that the election is over, and hope that folks on all sides take a deep breath and remember what one candidate said: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/09\/09\/politics\/hillary-clinton-donald-trump-basket-of-deplorables\/\">Clinton expresses regret for saying &#8216;half&#8217; of Trump supporters are &#8216;deplorables&#8217;<\/a>.&#8221; (CNN)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"excuse\"><\/a>&#8220;An Excuse for Hating People&#8221;<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cross_burning\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/800px-Cross_Lighting_2005-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>All that reminded me of a familiar sentiment I saw on Twitter last year:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Sometimes I wish I was religious so I could have an excuse for hating people.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Instead of seething with anger, I did a quick Google search.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase, with exactly those words, showed up about 60 times back then. A bot had posted the earliest example I found on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/atheism\/comments\/nts1q\/sometimes_i_wish\/\">reddit.com<\/a>, December 28, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Today I found nine results. Without the quotes, I got roughly 105,000,000 matches.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a lot of folks discussing religion and hate. Some agreed with the &#8220;excuse for hating people&#8221; quote, some didn&#8217;t, and some discussed something completely different.<\/p>\n<p>Last year&#8217;s &#8220;excuse for hating&#8221; quote hadn&#8217;t been directed at me, and came from an account that Tweets a lot of platitudes and quotations. Instead of firing back a response, I wrote a post that was like this one, only longer.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"imagine\"><\/a>Imagine Love<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocomics.com\/nonsequitur\/2011\/06\/13\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150124-nq_c110614-329b.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I sympathize, a little, with folks who assume that religion and hate are inseparable \u2014 or that faith is for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/addlepated\">addlepated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a teen, I tried listening to &#8216;Christian&#8217; radio. The steady drip feed of guilt, interspersed with rants against commies and rock music, drove me to an all-rock station.<\/p>\n<p>I learned to love rock and roll, eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/becoming-a-catholic\/\">become a Catholic<\/a>, and that&#8217;s another topic.<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t run into quite the same weird mix of Bible trivia, divination, and numerology, since the 1960s. But &#8216;End Times Bible Prophecies&#8217; are still part of American culture. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/last-judgment-still-pending\/\">August 7, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I suspect that the strident &#8216;kill a commie for Christ&#8217; crowd helped make John Lennon&#8217;s &#8220;Imagine&#8221; the best-selling single of his career:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;Imagine there&#8217;s no countries<br \/>\nIt isn&#8217;t hard to do<br \/>\nNothing to kill or die for<br \/>\nAnd no religion too<br \/>\nImagine all the people<br \/>\nLiving life in peace&#8230;.&#8221;<br \/>\nJohn Lennon, &#8220;Imagine&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imagine_%28John_Lennon_song%29\">1971<\/a>)<br \/>\n(posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldielyrics.com\/lyrics\/john_lennon\/imagine.html\">oldielyrics.com<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some Catholics sound and act like their &#8216;agree with me or be damned&#8217; Protestant counterparts. That&#8217;s not, or shouldn&#8217;t be, what our faith is about. For two millennia, the Church has been passing along a message of hope and love.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"love\"><\/a>Love: NO EXCEPTIONS<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.im.va\/content\/gdm\/en.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/201508ff\/20151208YearOfMercyCalendarImage-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Jubilee of Mercy, Rome, from the Vatican, used w\/o permission.\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m &#8220;religious,&#8221; in the sense that I take my faith seriously.<\/p>\n<p>But when I noticed myself hating American politicians, British musicians, or anyone else: my job is rooting out that hate, not expressing it.<\/p>\n<p>God doesn&#8217;t hate me, or you.<\/p>\n<p>God loves us, and wants to adopt us. <strong>All of us.<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PX9.HTM#GOSP.JOH.1.12\">John 1:12<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PX9.HTM#GOSP.JOH.1.14\">14<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXB.HTM#GOSP.JOH.3.17\">3:17<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PYW.HTM#NTLET.ROM.8.14\">Romans 8:14<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PYW.HTM#NTLET.ROM.8.17\">17<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P127.HTM#CATHL.2PET.1.3\">Peter 1:3<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P127.HTM#CATHL.2PET.1.4\">4<\/a>; Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#27\">27<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#30\">30<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c2a1.htm#52\">52<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a7.htm#1825\">1825<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c3a2.htm#1996\">1996<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I take God&#8217;s love seriously, so I try to love God, love my neighbor, see everybody as my neighbor, and treat others as I&#8217;d like to be treated.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/hating-people-not-an-option\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup> Our Lord said it is important:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup>6<\/sup> &#8216;Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#GOSP.MAT.7.12\">Matthew 7:12<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; &#8216;Teacher, <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#$37J\">21<\/a><\/sup> which commandment in the law is the greatest?&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8220;He said to him, <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#$37K\">22<\/a><\/sup> &#8216;You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.<br \/>\n&#8220;This is the greatest and the first commandment.<br \/>\n&#8220;The second is like it: <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#$37L\">23<\/a><\/sup> You shall love your neighbor as yourself.<br \/>\n&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#$37M\">24<\/a><\/sup> The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.&#8217; &#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#GOSP.MAT.22.36\">Matthew 22:36<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#GOSP.MAT.22.40\">40<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Seeing everybody as my neighbor means everybody. No exceptions. I&#8217;ll talk about the Samaritan one of these days, but not today. You&#8217;ll find that story in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.30\">Luke 10:30<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.37\">37<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"reason\"><\/a>Reason and Love, Briefly<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/not-going-native\/#taking\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/across_the_park___digital_matte_painting_by_jadrienc-d5nxd2h-detail-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I don&#8217;t feel &#8220;loving&#8221; all that often. Happily, I don&#8217;t have to.<\/p>\n<p>Feelings, emotions, are part of being human. But what counts is what I decide to do about them. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a5.htm#1762\">1762<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a5.htm#1770\">1770<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Making rational decisions is easier when my emotions and reason are in sync, and that&#8217;s yet another topic. Right.<\/p>\n<p>I think humanity is made in the image of the God. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P3.HTM#PENT.GEN.1.27\">Genesis 1:27<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p6.htm#356\">356<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p6.htm#361\">361<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a1.htm#1701\">1701<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a1.htm#1709\">1709<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Each of us is someone, not something; a person \u2014 able to reason, and decide how we act \u2014 and in these ways like God. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p6.htm#357\">357<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1.htm#1700\">1700<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a1.htm#1706\">1706<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>If I say that I love God, loving my neighbor \u2014 <strong>all<\/strong> my neighbors \u2014 seems reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>Our track record for using our reason and freedom is far from perfect.
