Gill's 'We survived Thanksgiving...?' (2017)\" align=\"right\"><\/a>As for me, my routine checkup this week was a mixed bag. I&#8217;m still dealing with diabetes and blood pressure issues. I weigh too much, so neither is a surprise.<\/p>\n<p>And I now have names for aches in two fingers of my left hand and pain in my right shoulder: arthritis and rotator cuff \u2014 tendinitis, I think it was.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing their names doesn&#8217;t make either go away. But the knowledge does help me learn more, and the after-visit report included exercises I can do. So I&#8217;ll say the visit was good news, on average.<\/p>\n<h5><a name=\"health\"><\/a>Health Issues, Uncertainty and 1 Corinthians 1:9<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/jesus-the-ultimate-alpha-a-personal-view\/#snapshots\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20210209ff\/20210401-JesusCleansesTheTemple-OttoElliger-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Otto Elliger's 'Jesus Cleanses the Temple.' (1700) from Pitts Theological Library, Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta (Georgia); used w\/o permission.\" align=\"right\"><\/a>On the other hand, &#8220;good news, on average&#8221; still leaves me with serious health issues.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings me to today&#8217;s Gospel reading: <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/17#50017011\">Luke 17:11<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/17#50017019\">19<\/a>. That&#8217;s the bit where Jesus heals 10 lepers, but only one turns around and thanks God. And the 10th leper was a Samaritan, no less.<\/p>\n<p>If Jesus could cure those lepers, then how come I haven&#8217;t experienced miraculous healing? And, yes: I asked about my glitchy hips, years back. That prayer&#8217;s answer was, apparently, &#8220;no.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe getting both hip joints replaced with no major complications was a low-profile answered prayer. I don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, there&#8217;s more to life than health issues and uncertainty. Thanksgiving Day&#8217;s second reading, for example. It ends with this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/1corinthians\/1#54001009\">1 Corinthians 1:9<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><a name=\"God\"><\/a>God, Love and a Prayer<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/november-3-the-end-of-civilization-as-we-know-it-again\/#it\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20200519ff\/20201101-Hagar-1973-02-25-EndOfCivilizationAsWeKnowIt-s-l1600-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Dik Browne's 'Hagar the Horrible:' 'It may be the end of civilization as we know it.' (February 25, 1973)\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being &#8220;called to fellowship&#8221; by Jesus is part of the best news humanity&#8217;s ever had.<\/p>\n<p>God loves us. All of us. Each of us. And wants to adopt us. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/romans\/8#53008015\">Romans 8:15<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/ephesians\/1#57001003\">Ephesians 1:3<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/ephesians\/1#57001005\">5<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/2peter\/1#69001003\">Peter 2:3<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/2peter\/1#69001004\">4<\/a>; Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scborromeo.org\/ccc\/prologue.htm#1\">1-3<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scborromeo.org\/ccc\/p1s1c1.htm#27\">27-30<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scborromeo.org\/ccc\/p1s1c2a1.htm#52\">52<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scborromeo.org\/ccc\/p3s1c1a7.htm#1825\">1825<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scborromeo.org\/ccc\/p3s1c3a2.htm#1996\">1996<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I think taking God up on that offer makes sense, so accepting God&#8217;s family values seems like a good idea. They&#8217;re very simple, basically.<\/p>\n<p>I should love God, love my neighbor, and see everyone as my neighbor. <strong>Everyone.<\/strong> No exceptions, no excuses. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/5#48005043\">Matthew 5:43<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/5#48005044\">44<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/22#48022036\">22:36<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/22#48022040\">40<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/12#49012028\">Mark 12:28<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/12#49012031\">31<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/6#50006031\">Luke 6:31<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/10#50010025\">10:25<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/10#50010027\">27<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/10#50010029\">29<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/10#50010037\">37<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scborromeo.org\/ccc\/p3s1c1a6.htm#1789\">1789<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I said they were simple, not easy.<\/p>\n<p>Before I forget, here&#8217;s a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/prayers\/thanksgiving-day-prayer\">Thanksgiving Day Prayer<\/a>,&#8221; from the USCCB&#8217;s website:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Lord, we thank you<br \/>\nfor the goodness of our people<br \/>\nand for the spirit of justice<br \/>\nthat fills this nation.<br \/>\nWe thank you for the beauty and fullness of the<br \/>\nland and the challenge of the cities.<br \/>\n&#8220;We thank you for our work and our rest,<br \/>\nfor one another, and for our homes.<br \/>\nWe thank you, Lord:<br \/>\naccept our thanksgiving on this day.<br \/>\nWe pray and give thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord.<br \/>\n&#8220;Amen.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are days \u2014 weeks, months \u2014 when I have trouble seeing that &#8220;spirit of justice.&#8221; And that&#8217;s another topic, for another day.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"assorted\"><\/a>Assorted First Thanksgivings<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/thanksgiving-and-being-thankful\/#pilgrims\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20190916ff\/20191125-800px-Thanksgiving-Brownscombe-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Jennie A. (1914) from Stedelijk Museum De Lakenhal, via Wikimedia Commons, used w\/o permission.\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My country&#8217;s Thanksgiving Day started in December of 1619, when immigrants were dropped on the banks of the James River, where Charles City County, Virginia, is now.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe America&#8217;s first Thanksgiving was in 1621.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s when the Plymouth Colony&#8217;s 53 Pilgrims celebrated their survival with a three-day party. They&#8217;d had the good sense to honor a treaty with Massasoit.<\/p>\n<p>And they paid attention to Tisquantum, a diplomat\/advisor who showed them how to plant crops that wouldn&#8217;t die before harvest.<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t found an explanation for that three-day Pilgrim party. Aside, that is, from the obvious &#8216;we&#8217;re not dead!&#8217; elation.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayflower and Speedwell Pilgrims were English Puritans who&#8217;d moved to Holland before heading across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, back in England, Henry VIII&#8217;s Church of England had cut annual Church non-Sunday holidays from 95 to 27.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/12-days-of-christmas-plus-1\/#then\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20180320ff\/20180519-PuritanChristmasBan-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Boston's public notice, banning the celebrations of Christmas. (1659)\" align=\"right\"><\/a>That was still 27 too many for English Puritans, who apparently didn&#8217;t see a point in rejoicing on days that weren&#8217;t Sabbaths.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Pilgrim Puritans weren&#8217;t as anti-holiday as their counterparts in England.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe having gone from 150 colonists to 53 in one year seemed like a reason to set principles aside and celebrate with a three-day holiday.<\/p>\n<p>The Plymouth and James River celebrations are the earliest documented events connecting our current &#8216;turkey day&#8217; with England&#8217;s 13 North American colonies.<\/p>\n<p>But Spaniards had harvest-time festivals in what&#8217;s now St. Augustine, Florida (1565) and San Elizario, Texas (1598).<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/thanksgiving-weekend-2021-puritans-pandemic-and-me\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h5><a name=\"being\"><\/a>Being Thankful for Another Harvest<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/thanksgiving-and-being-thankful\/#harvest\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20190916ff\/20191126-Pongal-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"BennyWikipedian's 'Pongal Festival\/Tamilar Thirunaal' illustration. (2009) via Wikimedia Commons, used w\/o permission.\" align=\"right\"><\/a>So, is America&#8217;s Thanksgiving Day a Puritan, Catholic or simply secular holiday?<\/p>\n<p>Depends, I&#8217;d say, on who you listen to.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish Thanksgiving Day origins would make it a Catholic holiday.<\/p>\n<p>The Plymouth Puritan version is probably still my country&#8217;s default origin story.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure about the James River folks.<\/p>\n<p>But since a 17th-century London-based company sponsored them, I&#8217;m pretty sure they weren&#8217;t Catholic.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s Thanksgiving is just like my country&#8217;s, except for how it&#8217;s different.<\/p>\n<p>Both look like England&#8217;s Harvest Home celebration. And all of the above resemble other European harvest festivals. Make that harvest festivals around the world. I talked about that, briefly, a couple years back.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/thanksgiving-weekend-2021-puritans-pandemic-and-me\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"tis\"><\/a>&#8216;Tis the Season<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UChLtXXpo4Ge1ReTEboVvTDg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20210922ff\/20211125-MacysThanksgivingDayCollage-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Collage from globalnews.ca's coverage of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. (November 25, 2021)\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nothing says &#8220;Christmas is coming&#8221; like giant bowling pins, a floating baby Yoda, marching imperial stormtroopers and Papa Smurf.<\/p>\n<p>Some things may say it better. But I like Macy&#8217;s Thanksgiving Day parade anyway.<\/p>\n<p>That said, bewailing Black Friday&#8217;s baneful impact on the hearts an minds of my fellow-Americans is an option. So is deploring Cyber Black Friday&#8217;s and Cyber Monday&#8217;s dread shadow falling upon this fair land.<\/p>\n<p>I could, but I won&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>For one thing, I like glitz. For another, we&#8217;re still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/thanksgiving-weekend-2021-puritans-pandemic-and-me\/#3\">3<\/a><\/sup> It&#8217;s not fun, and I see no problem with a little color and glitter. (November 26, 2021)\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Compared to last year&#8217;s Thanksgiving weekend, not as many Minnesotans have COVID-19.
