My viewpoint is more like <a href=\"http:\/\/edisonleecomic.com\/comics\/november-7-2016\/\">Edison Lee&#8217;s<\/a> dad in yesterday&#8217;s comic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/edisonleecomic.com\/comics\/november-7-2016\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20161107-Edison-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"From John Hambrock's The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee (November 7, 2016); used w\/o permission.\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I figure that someone will win the 2016 American presidential election. It&#8217;ll probably a candidate from one of the two major <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Political_parties_in_the_United_States\">political parties<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I think which candidate wins matters. But I also think that whoever gets the job \u2014 America will keep going. There&#8217;s a great deal more to this country than the national government.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not what this post is about, though.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever wins, I&#8217;m pretty sure that at least a few folks who think it&#8217;s the &#8220;wrong&#8221; candidate will make wild claims.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be talking about Satan in Sunday&#8217;s post, unless my mind wanders in another direction. That happened yesterday, which brings me to &#8220;the number of the beast&#8221; mentioned in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P12W.HTM#CATHL.REV.13.18\">Revelation 13:18<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And no, this won&#8217;t be a standard-issue rant. In my considered opinion, no living person is Adolf Hitler, the Antichrist, or Nero.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"triangular\"><\/a>Triangular Numbers and Wannabe Prophets<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Triangular_number\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20161107-500px-First_six_triangular_numbers-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>The number is &#8220;six hundred and sixty-six&#8221; in my Bible, but a few, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Codex_Ephraemi_Rescriptus\">Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus<\/a>, say it&#8217;s \u1f11\u03be\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc\u03c3\u03b9\u03bf\u03b9 \u03b4\u03ad\u03ba\u03b1 \u1f15\u03be, 616.<\/p>\n<p>The number 666 is a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Triangular_number\">triangular number<\/a>. There&#8217;s nothing triangular about triangular numbers: 0, 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>But if you&#8217;ve got a triangular number of marbles, you can arrange them in an equilateral triangle. I&#8217;m just enough of a data geek to enjoy facts like that.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/numbers-and-nero\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup> Your experience may vary.<\/p>\n<p>Enthusiastic wannabe prophets notwithstanding, I figure six hundred and sixty six is very possibly a reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nero\">Nero<\/a>, who couldn&#8217;t have played a fiddle while <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nero#Great_Fire_of_Rome_.2864_AD.29\">Rome burned<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The fiddle, or violin, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fiddle#History\">started out<\/a> as Europe&#8217;s 10th-century take on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Byzantine_lyra#History\">Byzantine lyre<\/a>, first mentioned by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ibn_Khordadbeh\">Ibn Khordadbeh<\/a>. The lyre, I mean, not the fiddle, and that&#8217;s another topic.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"nero\"><\/a>Nero, Mostly<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/authority-superstition-progress\/#sumerian\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/289px-Roman_SPQR_bannersvg-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Nero actually did give <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nero#Public_performances\">public performances<\/a> showcasing his musical talents, probably for mixed motives.<\/p>\n<p>Tacitus says that some considered Nero&#8217;s celebrity status as a songster shameful. I see their point, but figure that if folks in leadership roles don&#8217;t fit the <a href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/a+stuffed+shirt\">stuffed shirt<\/a> stereotype, that&#8217;s their decision.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re still not sure exactly how the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Fire_of_Rome\">Great Fire of Rome<\/a> in July 64 started. Tacitus says Nero helped rescue and rebuilding efforts, but others claimed that he set the fire.<\/p>\n<p>Nero fingered Christians living in Rome, with painfully lethal results. For Christians, that is. There was more to the on-again, off-again, anti-Christian imperial policies than scapegoating a minority, and that&#8217;s yet another topic.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/numbers-and-nero\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>About Nero and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P12W.HTM#CATHL.REV.13.18\">Revelation 13:18<\/a>, I take the Bible very seriously. But I&#8217;m a Catholic, so I don&#8217;t try to believe that it&#8217;s written from a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biblical_literalism\">literalist<\/a> Western\/American viewpoint. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 133)<\/p>\n<p>Revelation &#8220;&#8230;abounds in unfamiliar and extravagant symbolism, which at best appears unusual to the modern reader&#8230;.&#8221; Trying to understand it is possible, but &#8220;&#8230;symbolic descriptions are not to be taken as literal descriptions&#8230;.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/numbers-and-nero\/#3\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"as\"><\/a>As for my culture&#8217;s perennial &#8216;end times Bible prophecies,&#8217; I see them as exercises in futility: at best. We&#8217;ve been getting ready for our Lord&#8217;s return for two millennia. I&#8217;d be astounded if I live at the moment we&#8217;re finally done.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/numbers-and-nero\/#3\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Besides, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVX.HTM#GOSP.MAT.24.4\">Matthew 24:4<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVX.HTM#GOSP.MAT.24.27\">27<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVX.HTM#GOSP.MAT.24.36\">24:36<\/a> says; that information seems to be given on a &#8216;need to know&#8217; basis. If our Lord didn&#8217;t need to know, I certainly don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got my hands full, trying to act like loving God, loving my neighbor, and seeing everyone as my neighbor, is a good idea. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.43\">Matthew 5:43<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.44\">44<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#GOSP.MAT.22.36\">22:36<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#GOSP.MAT.22.40\">40<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWE.HTM#GOSP.MAR.12.28\">Mark 12:28<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWE.HTM#GOSP.MAR.12.31\">31<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWP.HTM#GOSP.LUK.6.31\">Luke 6:31<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.25\">10:25<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.27\">27<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.29\">29<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.37\">37<\/a>;
