That&#8217;s a good thing for me, since I have maintenance issues with mine.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h4><a name=\"suicide\"><\/a>Suicide: No Future In It<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Suicide#Risk_factors\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150207-Suicide_cases_from_16_American_states_2008-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>As I said last week, undiagnosed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_depressive_disorder\">depression<\/a> and something probably on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autism_spectrum\">autism spectrum<\/a> has been part of my life for decades. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/trusting-feelings-within-reason\/#getting\">October 5, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The first time I felt like killing myself was in my teens. At the time, I decided that I could last longer than the pain.<\/p>\n<p>I was right.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s no great virtue on my part. I&#8217;m <strong>very<\/strong> stubborn, and could apply what I&#8217;d learned about enduring physical pain to the psychological version.<\/p>\n<p>When I became a Catholic, I learned more about why suicide is a bad idea.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m responsible for my life. It&#8217;s a gift from God. I don&#8217;t have the authority to end it. Besides, it&#8217;s not just about me. Other folks might be affected, too. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2280\">2280<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2282\">2282<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>However<\/strong>, if someone tells you that your child\/spouse\/relative\/friend is in Hell because he or she committed suicide: that is not what the Church says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.&#8221;<br \/>\n(Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2283\">2283<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s <strong>help available<\/strong> for those of us with suicidal thoughts these days: like the <b>National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s <strong>800-273-TALK (8255) \/ 800-273-8255<\/strong> \u2014 a free, 24\/7 service that can provide suicidal persons or those around them with support, information and local resources. <strong>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org\/\">National Suicide Prevention Lifeline<\/a> \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org\/\">www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"irritable\"><\/a>An Irritable Life, But a Short One?<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/elastic-brains-and-new-tech\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_depressive_disorder#Biological\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150207-800px-Synapse_Illustration2_tweaked-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_depressive_disorder#Prognosis\">Major depressive disorder<\/a> probably isn&#8217;t lethal, by itself. On average, though, folks with this disorder have shorter lives \u2014 partly because we&#8217;re much more likely than most to kill ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re also more likely to drop dead from heart disease and assorted other illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, feeling hopeless or irritable most of the time doesn&#8217;t help us concentrate.<\/p>\n<p>Neither does our inadequate supply <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_depressive_disorder#Biological\">neurotransmitters<\/a>: serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Quite a few of us wind up homeless; but again, that doesn&#8217;t always happen.<\/p>\n<p>Nerves in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peripheral_nervous_system\">peripheral<\/a> nervous system handle signals to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phrenic_nerve\">diaphragm<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heart_rate#Influences_from_the_central_nervous_system\">heart<\/a>, and other vital systems.<\/p>\n<p>These nerves use dopamine, a neurotransmitter that&#8217;s in short supply in folks with major depression. I&#8217;d be surprised if glitchy control circuits <strong>didn&#8217;t<\/strong> eventually kill us.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"praise\"><\/a>Praise the Lord and Pass the Prescriptions<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/ISS007-E-10807-2-658.jpg?w=640\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/ISS007-E-10807-2-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\"><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">(Image from ISS program and the JSC Earth Science &amp; Remote Sensing Unit, ARES Division, Exploration Integration Science Directorate, used w\/o permission.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I learned this sort of thing as a child:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PGF.HTM#$1CM\">4<\/a><\/sup> Even when I walk through a dark valley, I fear no harm for you are at my side; your rod and staff give me courage.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PGF.HTM#WISDB.PSA.23.4\">Psalms 23:4<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are my hope, Lord; my trust, GOD, from my youth.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PHR.HTM#WISDB.PSA.71.5\">Psalms 71:5<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Praise the LORD, my soul; I shall praise the LORD all my life, sing praise to my God while I live.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PJU.HTM#WISDB.PSA.146.2\">Psalms 146:2<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Remembering it while stumbling though a dark valley: that&#8217;s not easy, but I think it&#8217;s important.<\/p>\n<p>So is remembering this sort of thing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The soul of the sluggard craves in vain, but the diligent soul is amply satisfied.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PKC.HTM#WISDB.PRO.13.4\">Proverbs 13:4<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a name=\"folks\"><\/a>Folks who don&#8217;t believe in medicine, assuming that &#8216;God will provide,&#8217; occasionally hit the news when one of their number drops dead of a treatable condition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Relying on the Lord&#8217; is a very nice notion, and appropriate. Within reason.<\/p>\n<p>I believe that God constantly sustains my existence \u2014 and makes a world where the creatures in it, myself included, have a role in making things happen. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#301\">301<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#306\">306<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"ive\"><\/a><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/PrayerAndPrescriptions20161012-329.JPG?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\">I&#8217;ve got hands and a brain. I figure God expects me to <strong>do<\/strong> something with them.<\/p>\n<p>My life and health are &#8220;precious gifts&#8221; from God. Taking &#8220;reasonable care&#8221; of them is part of my job. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2288\">2288<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>That includes taking <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Methylphenidate\">methylphenidate<\/a>, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychoactive_drug\">psychoactive<\/a> drugs that lets me think without constantly fighting the machinery in my brain.<\/p>\n<p>I could try &#8216;rising above&#8217; my brain&#8217;s lack of neurotransmitters, continuing a decades-long struggle to focus on each hour&#8217;s tasks. I could also try turning my metal-and-plastic hip joints into flesh-and-blood ones with the power of my mind.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t seem reasonable.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"genetics\"><\/a>Genetics and Responsibility<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Depression_(mood)#Life_events\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150704-800px-Durer_Melancholia_I-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Feeling sad and hopeless is part of major depressive disorder \u2014 but this &#8220;depression&#8221; isn&#8217;t just a mood or a bout of the blues.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s probably a &#8220;weakness,&#8221; in the sense that something in my genes may have made me more susceptible than others.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/elastic-brains-and-new-tech\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>It could have been worse. Some folks are susceptible to things like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crohn%27s_disease\">Chron&#8217;s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I do not think &#8220;depression&#8221; is a sign of weak moral character, or feel guilty because I can&#8217;t think myself into good health.<\/p>\n<p>Some folks who enjoy good health seem convinced that it&#8217;s due to their moral and mental strength.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll grant that good behavior generally helps me stay healthier.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think depression and whatever else is wrong with my brain&#8217;s circuitry gives me an excuse for misbehaving. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p7.htm#387\">387<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I can decide to act, or not act; and am responsible for my actions. (Catechism,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a3.htm#1730\">1730<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a3.htm#1738\">1738<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>But I don&#8217;t think God will blame me for experiencing the effects of illness, mental or otherwise. Friedman, op-ed, The New York Times (October 8, 2016)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a reason adults don&#8217;t pick up Japanese or learn how to kite surf. It&#8217;s ridiculously hard. In stark contrast, young people can learn the most difficult things relatively easily. Polynomials, Chinese, skateboarding \u2014 no problem!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Neuroplasticity \u2014 the brain&#8217;s ability to form new neural connections and be influenced by the environment \u2014 is greatest in childhood and adolescence, when the brain is still a work in progress. But this window of opportunity is finite. Eventually it slams shut. Or so we thought.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Until recently, the conventional wisdom within the fields of neuroscience and psychiatry has been that development is a one-way street, and once a person has passed through his formative years, experiences and abilities are very hard, if not impossible, to change&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The best, or easiest, time for learning is when we&#8217;re very young. But &#8216;you can&#8217;t teach an old dog new tricks&#8217; isn&#8217;t always true. Not for humans, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found that giving adults <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Valproate\">valproic acid<\/a>, Valproate, helps adults learn perfect pitch; and I learned that it&#8217;s called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Absolute_pitch\">absolute pitch<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It looks like histone deacetylase, a substance that affects DNA, is involved in making our brains more open to rewiring. I put a list of resources near the end of this post.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/elastic-brains-and-new-tech\/#3\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Friedman ends his op-ed with this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;You &#8230; can&#8217;t be sure that opening a new sensitive period won&#8217;t leave you worse off than the first one did. You might find it easier to pick up Chinese, but you might also remember more acutely all the disappointments and traumas that you&#8217;d prefer to forget.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Finally, our very identity is enmeshed in these neural circuits. Do we really want to tamper with them at the risk of altering who we are?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But the allure of recapturing neuroplasticity, with its potential to treat diseases like Alzheimer&#8217;s and autism, as well as to repair early psychological trauma, will be very hard to resist.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/09\/opinion\/return-to-the-teenage-brain.html\">Richard A. Friedman<\/a>, op-ed, The New York Times)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m not convinced that we <strong>should<\/strong> &#8220;resist&#8221; developing medical technology that could enhance neuroplasticity, treat degenerative diseases, and help folks like me repair our minds.<\/p>\n<p>Taking time to think about how we should use new technology \u2014 seems reasonable. I talked about new tech and rational reflection last week.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/elastic-brains-and-new-tech\/#4\">4<\/a><\/sup> (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/bioethics-and-a-three-parent-baby\/#therapy\">October 7, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"learning\"><\/a>Learning How Our Brains Work<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Functional_magnetic_resonance_imaging\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20161013-Researcher-test-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>My high school science textbooks said that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neuroplasticity#History\">adult brains<\/a> were static, unchanging. The assumption was that our brains don&#8217;t change, once we get past youth: no new neurons, no new connections between neurons.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure how that belief took hold, or why the idea that adult brains aren&#8217;t hardwired took so long to catch on. The fancy term for the brain&#8217;s ability to change is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neuroplasticity\">neuroplasticity<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/elastic-brains-and-new-tech\/#5\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Michele Vicenzo Malacarne&#8217;s 1793 research suggested that training makes an animal&#8217;s cerebellum grow. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_James\">William James<\/a> apparently <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neuroplasticity#History\">raised the idea<\/a> that adult brains aren&#8217;t rigid in his 1890 book, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Principles_of_Psychology\">The Principles of Psychology<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karl_Lashley\">Karl Lashley&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neuroplasticity#Research_and_discovery\">1923<\/a> research with Rhesus monkeys showed neural connections in their brains changing through adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect it helps that we&#8217;ve got <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Functional_neuroimaging\">functional neuroimaging<\/a> tech now, like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Single-photon_emission_computed_tomography\">Single-photon emission computed tomography<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magnetoencephalography\">magnetoencephalography<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electroencephalography\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150326-EEG_cap-165.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Scientists have known that electrical impulses happen in brains since around <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electroencephalography#History\">1860<\/a>, and we&#8217;ve learned a very great deal about how the brain works in the last few decades.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t have science fiction&#8217;s &#8216;brain scanners&#8217; yet. Now, engineers at the University of Southampton say they&#8217;ve shown that low-power devices known as memristors might be more energy efficient than today&#8217;s experimental neural interfaces that help relay signals from the brain to prosthetic limbs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Themis Prodromakis, who studies nanoelectronics at the University of Southampton, in England, is exploring one of the building blocks of brain and computer interfaces for medical applications. His early research supports the development of special neuronal brain-chips: neural implants that communicate with prosthetic limbs when neurons fire&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As of this week, Wikipedia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Memristor\">Memristor<\/a> page says it&#8217;s &#8220;a hypothetical non-linear passive two-terminal electrical component,&#8221; and says &#8220;there are &#8230; some serious doubts as to whether the memristor can actually exist in physical reality&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rational caution is a good idea; which is why scientists tried replicating <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cold_fusion\">cold fusion<\/a> results back in 1989, instead of uncritically accepting the claims.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that&#8217;s the reason for the &#8220;serious doubts.&#8221; Or maybe this is like the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Koch%E2%80%93Pasteur_rivalry\">Koch-Pasteur rivalry<\/a>. According to one set of estimates, consumers spent $715 million on these games in 2013, and are set to spend $3.38 billion by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And they might be wasting their money&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>$715 million a year sounds like a lot of money, and it is. I figured learning how much one person might &#8220;waste&#8221; on a game might give me a better idea of what we&#8217;re looking at.<\/p>\n<p>A one-year subscription to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainhq.com\/\">BrainHQ<\/a> costs $96. That&#8217;s more than I pay for <a href=\"http:\/\/subscriptions.skyandtelescope.com\/\">Sky and Telescope<\/a>, but doesn&#8217;t seem exorbitant for an entertainment expense.<\/p>\n<p>Another outfit, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cogmed.com\/\">Cogmed<\/a>, says &#8220;Cogmed solutions help consumers, professionals, and schools address attention problems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That got my attention, particularly since I couldn&#8217;t find a price listing. I&#8217;ve learned to associate profuse self-praise and no visible price with &#8220;if you have to ask, you can&#8217;t afford it&#8221; products and services.<\/p>\n<p>Cogmed&#8217;s claim to have practical benefits makes their offer something other than entertainment<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"patent\"><\/a>Patent Medicines for the Information Age?<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patent_medicine#Supposed_uses\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20141202-Ebath-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>My quick look at &#8216;brain game&#8217; marketing backs up what the seven psychologists said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/psi.sagepub.com\/content\/17\/3\/103.full\">Do &#8216;Brain-Training&#8217; Programs Work?<\/a>&#8221;<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\">Daniel J. (ca. 1890)\" align=\"right\"><\/a>I expect a certain amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puffery\">puffery<\/a> in advertising: exaggerations that no <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reasonable_person\">reasonable person<\/a> would believe, like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Polar_Bears\">polar bears<\/a> drinking Coca-Cola.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t see a problem with marketing a product, maybe because I spent two decades in that field.<\/p>\n<p>But presenting a product or service&#8217;s benefits is one thing. Emulating patent medicine advertising like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hamlin%27s_Wizard_Oil\">Hamlin&#8217;s Wizard Oil&#8217;s<\/a> is something else.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"american\"><\/a>American <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patent_medicine\">patent medicine<\/a> makers flourished in the later 19th century because so many folks didn&#8217;t trust doctors, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pure_Food_and_Drug_Act\">Pure Food and Drug Act<\/a> wasn&#8217;t around yet.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of 19th-century medical practice wasn&#8217;t unreasonable. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bloodletting\">Bloodletting<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vomiting#Emetics\">emetics<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laxative\">laxatives<\/a>, were routine medical procedures.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/elastic-brains-and-new-tech\/#8\">8<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The Pure Food and Drug Act wasn&#8217;t a cure-all. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radium\">Radium<\/a> 226 and 228 in Bailey Radium Laboratories&#8217; &#8220;Perpetual Sunshine,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radithor\">Radithor<\/a>, eventually put <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eben_Byers#Biography\">Eben Byers<\/a> in a lead-lined coffin, decades after the FDA&#8217;s launch.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d be astonished if any of today&#8217;s &#8216;brain game&#8217; software is lethal.
