This year&#8217;s New Year&#8217;s Eve street party in NYC&#8217;s Times Square will be virtual. Folks will, barring miracles, keep catching COVID-19 and occasionally dying as a result.<\/p>\n<p>But we now have vaccines that should give an increasing number of folks at least limited immunity.<\/p>\n<p>As I see it, all that&#8217;s good news.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d prefer focusing exclusively on the &#8216;up&#8217; side.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s an ethical problem with the new vaccines. Metaphorically.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere along the line in their development, an innocent person was killed and broken down for parts. That&#8217;s a bad idea and nobody should have done it.<\/p>\n<p>But someone did.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what I read Monday, December 14:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/news\/2020\/us-bishop-chairmen-pro-life-and-doctrine-address-ethical-concerns-new-covid-19-vaccines\">U.S. Bishop Chairmen for Pro-Life and Doctrine Address Ethical Concerns on the New COVID-19 Vaccines<\/a>&#8221;<br \/>\nPublic Affairs Office, USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) (December 14, 2020)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On December 14, Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops&#8217; (USCCB) Committee on Doctrine, and Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City in Kansas, chairman of the USCCB&#8217;s Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued a statement on the new COVID-19 vaccines. In their statement, the bishops address the moral concerns raised by the fact that the three vaccines that appear to be ready for distribution in the United States all have some connection to cell lines that originated with tissue taken from abortions&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The USCCB Public Affairs Office statement includes a link to a longer, and somewhat more detailed, discussion of the issue.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/moral-considerations-covid-vaccines\">Moral Considerations Regarding the New COVID-19 Vaccine<\/a>&#8221;<br \/>\nChairmen of the Committee on Doctrine and the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (December 14, 2020)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That was a longer read.<\/p>\n<p>But the full statement included details that help explain why the bishops aren&#8217;t condemning all COVID-19 vaccines. And why they&#8217;re not praising them, either.<\/p>\n<h5><a name=\"hek\"><\/a>HEK 293 Donor: RIP<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HEK_293_cells\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20201109ff\/20201215-HEK293FTinvitro-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"An HEK 293 variant: 293FT cells.\" align=\"right\"><\/a>(Very) briefly, the three COVID-19 vaccines we&#8217;re looking at are from Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca.<\/p>\n<p>All three used the HEK 293 cell line.<\/p>\n<p>Someone in the Netherlands, I don&#8217;t know who, had an unwanted preborn girl killed in the early 1970s. In 1973, biologist Frank Graham modified cells that had been harvested from her body.<sup><a href=\"#1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The HEK 293 donor would be in her late 40s now, if she hadn&#8217;t been killed.<\/p>\n<p>But she&#8217;s dead, and now we&#8217;re dealing with an unpleasant reality.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, neither Pfizer nor Moderna used HEK 293 while designing, developing or producing their vaccines. They did, however, use HEK 293 cells in a confirmatory test.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t see that as good news, but I think the USCCB committee is right. The connection with an early-1970s Netherlands homicide is remote.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, AstraZeneca&#8217;s researchers used HEK 293 cells while designing, developing and producing their vaccine \u2014 <strong>and<\/strong> for confirmatory testing.<\/p>\n<p>I think the USCCB bishops are right. Pfizer and Moderna testing their vaccines with cells from a murdered child is ethically dubious.<\/p>\n<p>But the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines&#8217; development &#8220;&#8230;is very remote from the initial evil of the abortion&#8230;.&#8221; (&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/moral-considerations-covid-vaccines\">&#8230;Regarding the New COVID-19 Vaccine<\/a>,&#8221; USCCB (December 14, 2020))<\/p>\n<p>The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine? Not so much:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The AstraZeneca vaccine should be avoided if there are alternatives available&#8230;.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/moral-considerations-covid-vaccines\">&#8230;Regarding the New COVID-19 Vaccine<\/a>&#8221;<br \/>\nChairmen of the Committee on Doctrine and the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, USCCB (December 14, 2020)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><a name=\"options\"><\/a>Options and &#8220;The Mark of the Beast&#8221;<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/editing-genes-ethically\/#still\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170721ff\/20170816-Willowbrook_State_School_NYPL_b15279351-105038_-_cropped-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Willowbrook State School.\" align=\"right\"><\/a>I would prefer living in a world where the HEK 293 donor had not been killed, and Dr. Mengele had not made use of specimens available at Auschwitz.<\/p>\n<p>It would be nice if Doctors Clark and Parran had decided against using bottom-run Americans as guinea pigs in the Tuskegee experiments.<\/p>\n<p>And I think that folks running Willowbrook State School should not have used their mentally disabled subjects in a hepatitis experiment.<sup><a href=\"#2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>But I live in a world where all that happened.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t change what has been done. I can, however, decide how I deal with today&#8217;s reality. And how I respond to the USCCB&#8217;s statement.<\/p>\n<p>One option is complaining. No, not happening and may God have mercy on you!&#8221;<br \/>\n(Anonymous, comment on the CNW article)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ethics, how about morals? So they investigate these vaccines, but, do not investigate the Covid itself and the use of masks. The possibility exists that it has a 99.7% recovery rate. They say nothing about that or the suppression of therapeutics on twitter and Facebook. The UCSSB lacks investigative backbone.&#8221;<br \/>\n([name redacted] from my social media feeds)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;d rather avoid both bandwagons. Although maybe I&#8217;d get more attention by demonizing someone. Or supporting a popular conspiracy theory. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/election-year-weirdness-an-american-tradition\/\">October 21, 2020<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/covid-19-and-minnesota-masks\/#conspiracy\">July 23, 2020<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"statistics\"><\/a>Statistics and Death<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/covid-19\/index.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20201109ff\/20201215-covid-19-vaccine-providers-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"CDC: Clinical Resources for Each COVID-19 Vaccine.\" align=\"right\"><\/a>There&#8217;s a little truth to the &#8220;99.7% recovery rate&#8221; assertion.<\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s case fatality rate (CFR), for example, is only 2.3%. For every 1,000 folks in that country known to have had COVID-19, only 23 have died.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore is doing even better. Their CFR has been only 0.05%. That&#8217;s 0.51 deaths per 100,000 COVID-19 cases.<\/p>\n<p>America&#8217;s CFR in August was 3.3%. Probably. That&#8217;s better than an overall average of 4.24% in 82 countries, territories, and areas. I figure we&#8217;re doing pretty well. Not as well as Singapore or India. But, hey, we&#8217;re a little better than average.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe. The statistics are controversial. CFR isn&#8217;t infection fatality ratio, IFR, and I gather that both terms are controversial, too.<\/p>\n<p>I figure the bottom line is that most folks who get COVID-19 recover. On average, only four or five of every hundred die from the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Some, maybe 10% to 20%, don&#8217;t die; but don&#8217;t recover, either. That still leaves something like 75% of folks who catch COVID-19 getting better. This pandemic <strong>is<\/strong> survivable.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Even at my age, with my medical issues, I might survive the pandemic bug. But I still think vaccinations are a good idea.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"love\"><\/a>Love, Neighbors and the Common Good<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/holiday-hodgepodge-lights-health-pandemic-paranoia\/#news\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20200519ff\/20200902-BackHome-DSC08852-329.JPG?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The Masked Minnesotan.\" align=\"right\"><\/a>That&#8217;s because I think the American bishops are right.<\/p>\n<p>Acting as if I love my neighbor is a good idea.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;&#8217;In view of the gravity of the current pandemic and the lack of availability of alternative vaccines, the reasons to accept the new COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are sufficiently serious to justify their use, despite their remote connection to morally compromised cell lines.<br \/>\n&#8220;&#8216;Receiving one of the COVID-19 vaccines ought to be understood as an act of charity toward the other members of our community. But that&#8217;s in the mix. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, One\/Two\/Article 2 Participation in Social Life\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a2.htm#II\">II: The Common Good<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2258\">2258<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2317\">2317<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"remembering\"><\/a>Remembering, and Learning From, Our Past<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/editing-genes-ethically\/#learning\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/201508ff\/20150923-350px-Tuskegee-syphilis-study_doctor-injecting-subject-trim-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Ideally, the HEK 293 cell line wouldn&#8217;t exist.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mengele wouldn&#8217;t have sliced, diced and dosed prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Public Health Service wouldn&#8217;t have lied to sharecroppers.<\/p>\n<p>Mentally disabled kids at Willowbrook wouldn&#8217;t have been given hepatitis.<\/p>\n<p>But it happened.<\/p>\n<p>Refusing to use medical technology that was tested with the HEK 293 donor&#8217;s cell line won&#8217;t unkill her. Burying research done by Mengele and company won&#8217;t help their victims.<\/p>\n<p>But maybe, if we let ourselves remember atrocities, we can learn from them. The Nuremberg Code and Declarations of Geneva and Helsinki suggest that this is possible. My guess is that it won&#8217;t be until April, 2021. Give or take a few months.<\/p>\n<p>But, as I said earlier, that&#8217;s okay. I&#8217;m willing to wait for my turn.
