Or hadn&#8217;t spread to humans. Or was spreading to humans without anyone noticing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever was happening last November, SARS-CoV-2 wasn&#8217;t identified until December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The COVID-19 outbreak became a Public Health Emergency of International Concern last January. By the end of March, it was an official pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disease has killed upwards of 1,380,000 folks so far. We still don&#8217;t have a ready-for-humans vaccine.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/thanksgiving-2020-pandemic-peril-and-perspectives\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"conspiracy\"><\/a>Conspiracy Theories and the Usual Suspects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/covid-19-and-minnesota-masks\/#wannabe\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20190916ff\/20200320-Durer_apocalisse_12_il_mostro_marino_e_la_bestia-detail--329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>The COVID-19 pandemic is scary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe that&#8217;s why some folks insist that it isn&#8217;t real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or that it&#8217;s a bio-engineered population control plot spread by 5G mobile phone networks and polio vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that America, China, Jews, Muslims or whoever are the Master Villains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all I know, someone believes that America, China, Jews <strong>and<\/strong> Muslims are in cahoots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I figure the disease is real. So is the SARS-CoV-2 virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s conspiracy theories are real only in the sense that some folks believe them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the &#8216;up&#8217; side, I&#8217;ve yet to see a pandemic-themed End Times Bible Prophecy get traction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe there&#8217;s one in the works. We&#8217;ve got a great conjunction coming December 21, a few days before Christmas. Jupiter and Saturn will be closer in Earth&#8217;s sky than they&#8217;ve been since 1623.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"ormaybe\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/expectations\/#signs\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170821ff\/20170823-Revelation12Sign-fromGIF-enh-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Or maybe it&#8217;s too soon after the recent &#8220;Blood Moon Prophecy.&#8221; Which fizzled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two American preachers took a recurring and predictable sequence of lunar eclipses, stirred in snippets from Joel, Acts and Revelation, and got at least their 15 minutes of fame in 2014 and 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t know why folks believe conspiracy theories, End Times Bible Prophecies and Ponzie schemes.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/thanksgiving-2020-pandemic-peril-and-perspectives\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup> And that&#8217;s another topic. Topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or maybe not so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suspect that at least some folks have short memories. Or, putting a positive spin on it, have achieved mastery of living in the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"unprecedented\"><\/a>The &#8220;Unprecedented&#8221; Precedent<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170821ff\/20170828-20170827-ap_17239659582683-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"David J. Phillip\/AP's photo, via KXAN: 'residents are rescued from their homes surrounded by floodwaters from Tropical Storm Harvey Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017, in Houston, Texas.')\" align=\"right\">Headlines abound with superfluous superlatives: announcing that something&#8217;s the biggest, hottest, coldest, longest or whatever-est ever seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes they&#8217;re right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And sometimes maybe they&#8217;re not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpr.org\/2020\/11\/23\/colorado-families-face-an-unprecedented-thanksgiving-amid-new-coronavirus-wave\/\">Colorado Families Face An Unprecedented Thanksgiving Amid New Coronavirus Wave<\/a>&#8220;<br>Monica Castillo, Colorado Public Radio News (November 23, 2020)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/2020\/11\/22\/quincy-community-answers-call-for-thanksgiving-miracle-for-families-amid-unprecedented-need\/\">Quincy community answers call for &#8216;Thanksgiving miracle&#8217; for families amid unprecedented need<\/a>&#8220;<br>Erin Tiernan, Boston Herald (November 22, 2020)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Boston Herald&#8217;s &#8220;unprecedented&#8221; headline may make sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll willingly believe that Interfaith Social Services of Quincy, Massachusetts, has never had so many families without holiday meals and so few turkeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But &#8220;Colorado Families &#8230; Unprecedented Thanksgiving?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll grant that all or nearly all folks living in today&#8217;s Colorado weren&#8217;t there during the 1918 pandemic. But Colorado was not uninhabited back then. I understand that news editors are obliged to beguile readers. Some weren&#8217;t. These days, SATC stands for Sex and the City<span class=\"aCOpRe\">. In 1918, it was short for Student Army Training Corps.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judging from context, I&#8217;d say that [redacted] in the &#8220;Dread of Influenza&#8230;&#8221; headline meant thwarted or stifled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a name=\"family\"><\/a>Family, Health and Travel Decisions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/daily-life-coping\/holidays\/thanksgiving.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20201109ff\/20201124-thanksgiving-travel-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"'If you do travel,' Thanksgiving 2020, CDC.\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Fast-forward to this Thanksgiving season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of us are wearing face masks. Thanksgiving and Christmas are my culture&#8217;s two top times for family get-togethers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deciding to skip something we&#8217;ve done for generations isn&#8217;t easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Family is important. Health is important. So is working for the common good. The Macy&#8217;s website says coverage is &#8220;only on NBC,&#8221; <strong>and<\/strong> on &#8220;Verizon Live.&#8221; Maybe I can see their &#8216;come in and shop&#8217; celebration again this year. It depends partly on me finding it online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My family plans are of the &#8216;whatever happens, happens&#8217; variety. Nobody, happily, is expecting me to coordinate events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which reminds me. Regional hospitals are running out of room for patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I haven&#8217;t caught COVID-19, but I&#8217;ve still got diabetes and a mess of other health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And nobody&#8217;s abolished war, poverty or infomercials. With so much dreadfulness going on, what do I have to be thankful for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For starters, I woke up this morning. That&#8217;s <strong>always<\/strong> good.
