I cry for help but you do not listen! I cry out to you, &#8216;Violence!&#8217; but you do not intervene.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why do you let me see ruin; why must I look at misery? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and clamorous discord.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then the LORD answered me and said: Write down the vision Clearly upon the tablets, so that one can read it readily.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint; If it delays, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not be late.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PUD.HTM#PROPHB.HAB.1.2\">Habakkuk 1:2<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PUD.HTM#PROPHB.HAB.1.3\">3<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PUE.HTM#PROPHB.HAB.2.2\">2:2<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PUE.HTM#PROPHB.HAB.2.3\">3<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This was about 26 centuries back, and not a good era in our Lord&#8217;s homeland. Folks who should have known better were misbehaving, badly. It wasn&#8217;t the first time, and wouldn&#8217;t be the last.<\/p>\n<p>Abraham and Israel&#8217;s descendants got a reality check when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nebuchadnezzar_II\">Nebuchadnezzar II<\/a> attacked and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siege_of_Jerusalem_(597_BC)\">conquered<\/a> Jerusalem \u2014 returning to Babylon with a substantial fortune in treasure and people. That was in 597 BC.<\/p>\n<p>He was back in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siege_of_Jerusalem_(587_BC)\">587<\/a> to finish the job, burning the temple and destroying Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ishtar_Gate\">Ishtar Gate<\/a>, on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Babylon\">Babylon&#8217;s<\/a> north side, was built roughly a decade later. It was part of a massive reconstruction program started by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nabopolassar\">Nabopolassar<\/a>, Nebuchadnezzar II&#8217;s predecessor. Babylon had gone through some rough centuries by then.<\/p>\n<p>The gate appeared in several <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ancient_Greece\">Hellenic<\/a> tourist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seven_Wonders_of_the_Ancient_World#Background\">guidebooks<\/a>. These days it&#8217;s one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smb.museum\/museen-und-einrichtungen\/pergamonmuseum\/home.html\">Pergamonmuseum&#8217;s<\/a> indoor displays.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/wait-for-it\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"built\"><\/a>Built to Impress<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adolfo_Su%C3%A1rez_Madrid%E2%80%93Barajas_Airport#Traffic_and_statistics\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20161001-800px-Barajas_interior6-detail-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>My guess is that Nebuchadnezzar wanted to impress visitors, which is arguably why places like the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adolfo_Su%C3%A1rez_Madrid%E2%80%93Barajas_Airport#Traffic_and_statistics\">Adolfo Su\u00e1rez Madrid-Barajas Airport<\/a> get built with style.<\/p>\n<p>There was quite a bit to be impressed by at the time. Babylon was among the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Historical_urban_community_sizes#Iron_Age\">largest cities<\/a> on Earth by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/__PUC.HTM\">Habakkuk&#8217;s<\/a> day, home to between 125,000 and 150,000 folks.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s about half the size of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hillah\">Hillah<\/a>, a city five kilometers south of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hillah#Babylon_ruins\">Babylon&#8217;s ruins<\/a> and 100 kilometers south of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baghdad\">Baghdad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_the_Great\">Alexander III of Macedon<\/a>, Alexander the Great, planned to make Babylon the capital of his empire. He died in Nebuchadnezzar II&#8217;s palace about a month shy of his 33rd birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander&#8217;s empire promptly fell apart, and what was left of Babylon was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Babylon#Hellenistic_period\">evacuated<\/a> somewhere around 275 BC. Assorted other empires rose and fell, then Western civilization hit a rough patch, starting about <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crisis_of_the_Third_Century\">17 centuries<\/a> back, but we recovered.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"cyrus\"><\/a>Cyrus the Great and the News<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ishtar_Gate\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20161001-800px-Pergamon_Museum_Berlin_2007110-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>The good news is that archeologists who began <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ishtar_Gate#Excavation_and_display\">excavating<\/a> the Ishtar Gate site in 1902 kept careful records, so we know where the pieces they pulled out had been.<\/p>\n<p>The not-so-good-news is that some of the mud-brick structure was destroyed in the process. We&#8217;re much more careful these days, have better equipment, and that&#8217;s another topic.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure if what happened to the pieces is good or bad news. They&#8217;re currently held by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Istanbul_Archaeology_Museums\">Istanbul Archaeology Museums<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ny_Carlsberg_Glyptotek\">Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Detroit_Institute_of_Arts\">Detroit Institute of Arts<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/R%C3%B6hsska_Museum\">R\u00f6hsska Museum<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louvre\">Louvre<\/a>, and other museums.<\/p>\n<p>The reconstructed Ishtar Gate is arguably safer in Berlin&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smb.museum\/museen-und-einrichtungen\/pergamonmuseum\/home.html\">Pergamonmuseum<\/a> than it would be in today&#8217;s Iraq. Where &#8216;cultural treasures&#8217; like that should be kept depends on who you listen to.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/wait-for-it\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m forgetting something.<\/p>\n<p>No, don&#8217;t tell me: let me think. Habakkuk, hard times, Babylon. Right.<\/p>\n<p>What we call the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Babylonian_captivity\">Babylonian captivity<\/a> ended when K\u016bru\u0161\/\u06a9\u0648\u0631\u0648\u0634\/<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyrus_the_Great\">Cyrus the Great<\/a> took over management of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyrus_the_Great#Neo-Babylonian_Empire\">Babylon<\/a>. There&#8217;s more about what happened after that in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/__PBL.HTM\">Ezra<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Destruction and violence &#8230; strife, and clamorous discord&#8221; are in the news every day. I can&#8217;t ignore the mess, since I&#8217;m expected to &#8220;contribute &#8230; to the good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom&#8230;.&#8221; (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a2.htm#1915\">1915<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a4.htm#2239\">2239<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I mentioned that yesterday. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/love-neighbors-and-voting\/\">October 1, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"waiting\"><\/a>Waiting \u2014 and Working<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gentlemen_Prefer_Blondes_(1953_film)\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/Gentlemen_Prefer_Blondes_Movie_Trailer_Screenshot_34-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>This is <strong>not<\/strong> where I start ranting about returning to the &#8216;good old-fashioned values&#8217; of yesteryear.<\/p>\n<p>As I keep saying, I remember the &#8216;good old days:&#8217; and they weren&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>I say this a lot, too: loving God, loving my neighbor, and seeing everyone as my neighbor, is a good idea. God loves us, and wants to adopt us. All of us. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PX9.HTM#GOSP.JOH.1.12\">John 1:12<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PX9.HTM#GOSP.JOH.1.14\">14<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXB.HTM#GOSP.JOH.3.17\">3:17<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PYW.HTM#NTLET.ROM.8.14\">Romans 8:14<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PYW.HTM#NTLET.ROM.8.17\">17<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P127.HTM#CATHL.2PET.1.3\">Peter 1:3<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P127.HTM#CATHL.2PET.1.4\">4<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/prologue.htm#1\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#27\">27<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#30\">30<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c2a1.htm#52\">52<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a7.htm#1825\">1825<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c3a2.htm#1996\">1996<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>God&#8217;s offer comes with a job that&#8217;s not even close to being finished.<\/p>\n<p>It involves respecting the &#8220;transcendent dignity&#8221; of humanity, and each person \u2014 not easy, but necessary. So is building a better world for future generations. The job starts within each of us, within me, with an ongoing &#8220;inner conversion.&#8221; (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a1.htm#1888\">1888<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a3.htm#1928\">1928<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a3.htm#1942\">1942<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve made some progress over the last two millennia: and we have a very great deal left to do.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"we\"><\/a>We Won<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/joakimolofsson.deviantart.com\/art\/Blue-City-357995532\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/blue_city_by_joakimolofsson-d5x534c-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I suspect we&#8217;ll still be working with people of good will, building a better world, keeping what&#8217;s good and correcting what&#8217;s not, when folks like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Park_Geun-hye\">Park Geun-hye<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Narendra_Modi\">Narendra Modi<\/a> seem as remote as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nebuchadnezzar_II\">Nebuchadnezzar II<\/a> does today.<\/p>\n<p>On the &#8216;up&#8217; side, we&#8217;re already in &#8220;the last hour,&#8221; and have been for two thousand years. <strong>The war is over. We won.<\/strong> This world&#8217;s renewal is in progress, and nothing can stop it.
