And look ahead to when Jesus will be back. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p122a3p3.htm#522\">522<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p122a3p3.htm#524\">524<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c2a7.htm#668\">668<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c2a7.htm#674\">674<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/advent-and-being-prepared\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/AdventWreath2014-1lit-cpr-2015.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>That should be near the top of my &#8216;to-do&#8217; list, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Not that there&#8217;s anything wrong with Buckster Bunny&#8217;s real-world counterparts, holiday decorations, and enjoying life&#8217;s pleasures. Within reason. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/pythagorean-dribble-glasses\/\">July 9, 2017<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/temperance-catholic-style\/\">July 10, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s Gospel has some good advice:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Jesus said to his disciples: &#8216;Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come&#8230;. What I say to you, I say to all: &#8220;Watch!&#8221;&#8216;&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/13#49013033\">Mark 13:33<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/13#49013037\">37<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><a name=\"long\"><\/a>As Long as It Takes<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/gabriel-joseph-and-mary\/#son\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20161217-St_Denis_transept_south-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>I think everyone matters.<\/p>\n<p>Each of us has humanity&#8217;s &#8220;transcendent dignity.&#8221; (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a3.htm#1929\">1929<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>We all have &#8220;the same nature and the same origin,&#8221; but we&#8217;re not all alike. We&#8217;re not supposed to be. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a3.htm#1937\">1937<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>This is a good thing, or should be. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a3.htm#1934\">1934<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a3.htm#1938\">1938<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Some of us achieve &#8220;newspaper fame.&#8221; We recognize some for their &#8220;heroic virtue.&#8221; (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a9p3.htm#828\">828<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a2.htm#1723\">1723<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Those two categories overlap, and that&#8217;s another topic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Newspaper fame&#8221; can last longer than Andy Warhol&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/15_minutes_of_fame\">15 minutes of fame<\/a>.&#8221; A few folks earn much more lasting recognition. Millennia after they lived and died, we remember <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homer\">Homer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yan_Ying\">Yan Ying<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Himiko\">Himiko<\/a>. Some of us, that is.<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s Jesus. Two thousand years after he lived and died, a sizable fraction of humanity call him &#8220;Lord,&#8221; among other titles.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/advent-our-long-watch\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup> I&#8217;m one of them.<\/p>\n<p>I think what our Lord did is important.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t explain why I review what we know about Jesus before each winter solstice. Along with well upward of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_religious_populations#Adherent_estimates_in_2012\">billion<\/a> other folks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/emmaus-looking-back-and-ahead\/#stopped\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150404-Stom_Matthias_-_Le_repas_d-Emmaus-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>And it sure doesn&#8217;t explain why we&#8217;re still watching and waiting for our Lord&#8217;s return.<\/p>\n<p>After two millennia, we might have decided our Lord wasn&#8217;t coming back. Some have.<\/p>\n<p>But like I keep saying, Jesus isn&#8217;t anyone else. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/emmaus-looking-back-and-ahead\/#stopped\">April 30, 2017<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/last-judgment-still-pending\/#big\">August 7, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I think John sums it up rather well:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father&#8217;s only Son, full of grace and truth.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/1#51001001\">John 1:1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/1#51001014\">14<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be mostly talking about how I see our long watch, and why it&#8217;s more than just waiting.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a short link list to Advent resources and homilies near the end of this post.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/advent-our-long-watch\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"watching\"><\/a>Watching and Working<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/advent-and-being-prepared\/#another\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/Watching20141129-329bCpr.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Our Lord&#8217;s return has been &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c2a7.htm#673\">imminent<\/a>&#8221; for about two millennia now. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c2a7.htm#673\">673<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Jesus said we should &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/24#48024044\">be prepared<\/a>,&#8221; since we didn&#8217;t know when that will be; and still don&#8217;t. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/24#48024044\">Matthew 24:44<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c2a7.htm#673\">673<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a9p3.htm#840\">840<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a12.htm#1040\">1040<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s2a1.htm#2772\">2772<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>That seems like good advice.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re not lacking for work to keep us busy during our long watch.<\/p>\n<p>Part of our job is spreading the best news humanity&#8217;s ever had. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/28#48028016\">Matthew 28:16<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/28#48028020\">20<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>God loves us, and wants to adopt us. All of us. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/romans\/8#53008015\">Romans 8:15<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/ephesians\/1#57001003\">Ephesians 1:3<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/ephesians\/1#57001005\">5<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/2peter\/1#69001003\">Peter 2:3<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/2peter\/1#69001004\">4<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/prologue.htm#1\">1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/prologue.htm#3\">3<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#27\">27<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#30\">30<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c2a1.htm#52\">52<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a7.htm#1825\">1825<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c3a2.htm#1996\">1996<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve accepted the offer. That&#8217;s why I try to live as if the &#8216;family values&#8217; matter.<\/p>\n<p>Saying I believe in God, and that I&#8217;m a Christian, is fine. But it&#8217;s pointless unless my actions and words show it. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/james\/2#67002017\">James 2:17<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/james\/2#67002019\">19<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a7.htm#1814\">1814<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a7.htm#1816\">1816<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"part\"><\/a>Part of the Family<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/living-with-consequences\/#still\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20150430-rosetta20091113-browse-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Being &#8216;part of the family&#8217; includes accepting my part of a job that&#8217;s not even close to being finished.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a bad decision we made when humanity began, we&#8217;ve been treating each other badly. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p7.htm#396\">396<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p7.htm#412\">412<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a8.htm#1865\">1865<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a8.htm#1869\">1869<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s given us an impressive backlog of issues: troubled relationships within families and communities, and between nations.<\/p>\n<p>Our world is a mess, and so are we. But we&#8217;re still basically good. Our world is, too. I think cautious optimism makes sense. Lots of work. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c2a7.htm#668\">668<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c2a7.htm#670\">670<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a3.htm#1928\">1928<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a3.htm#1942\">1942<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>My job starts with loving God and my neighbors, and seeing everybody as my neighbor. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/5#48005043\">Matthew 5:43<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/5#48005044\">44<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/22#48022036\">22:36<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/22#48022040\">40<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/12#49012028\">Mark 12:28<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/12#49012031\">31<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/6#50006031\">Luke 6:31<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/10#50010025\">10:25<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/10#50010027\">27<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/10#50010029\">29<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/10#50010037\">37<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a6.htm#1789\">1789<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s simple, and very far from easy. But it&#8217;s a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it also sounds less grandiose than what I&#8217;ll talk about next.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"building\"><\/a>Building the Civilization of Love<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/owen-c.deviantart.com\/art\/Avenue-Eos-345921977\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170501ff\/20170603-avenue_eos_by_owen_c-d5pyb3t-detail-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\"><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">(From &#8220;Avenue Eos&#8221; by Owen Carson, used w\/o permission.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/veterans-day-2017\/#building\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/summer_walk_by_meganerid-d5ka8eu-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Building a better world starts within me, with an ongoing &#8220;inner conversion.&#8221; (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a1.htm#1888\">1888<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Not that I expect to single-handedly change the course the history, establishing truth and justice throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m just one man, living in central Minnesota, with very little influence on world affairs. But I can suggest that treating others with respect makes sense, and that working for a better future is an option.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s one reason I keep suggesting that generosity, kindness, and sharing make sense. So does planning for future generations. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c2a3.htm#1937\">1937<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a7.htm#2415\">2415<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a7.htm#2419\">2419<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a7.htm#2442\">2442<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The job will take time, lots of time, since it involves radical ideas like peace, solidarity, justice, and liberty:<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/advent-our-long-watch\/#3\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;We must <strong>overcome our fear of the future. But we will not be able to overcome it completely unless we do so together.<\/strong> The &#8216;answer&#8217; to that fear is neither coercion nor repression, nor the imposition of one social &#8216;model&#8217; on the entire world. The answer to the fear which darkens human existence at the end of the twentieth century is the common effort <strong>to build the civilization of love,<\/strong> founded on the universal values of peace, solidarity, justice, and liberty&#8230;.&#8221;<br \/>\n(&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/speeches\/1995\/october\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_spe_05101995_address-to-uno.html\">To the United Nations Organization<\/a>,&#8221; Pope St. John Paul II (October 5, 1995))<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We haven&#8217;t made much progress in building his &#8220;civilization of love&#8221; in the 22 years since St. John Paul II said working together made sense.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s hardly surprising. I am quite sure this will take centuries. Millennia, more likely.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re further along, sharing the best news ever. Maybe it&#8217;s more accurate to say that we&#8217;re a bit further along.<\/p>\n<p>Acting like love is a good idea is still hard. We&#8217;re far from convincing many, including ourselves, that we&#8217;re all neighbors. But I think we&#8217;ve made some progress in the last two millennia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/the-federation-of-the-world\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170501ff\/celistic_concept_art_by_zellim-d5qvhzi-detail3-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>I also think we will be waiting, working, and sharing a message of hope and love for a very long time.
