And Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/who-is-my-neighbor\/#love\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20170131-Quirijn_Boel_-_The_Good_Samaritan-658.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pharisees and Sadducees had been important and respected folks for about two centuries by the time our Lord talked about love.<\/p>\n<p>They agreed on quite a bit. Maybe more than they realized. But they didn&#8217;t see assorted political, social, and philosophical points the same way. One was Helenization, adopting at least some foreign ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Pharisees didn&#8217;t like Helenization. Sadducees thought it was a generally good idea. That attitude reminds of today &#8216;new ideas are bad&#8217; Christian factions.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, it&#8217;s not that simple.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"bible\"><\/a>The Bible: Unexpurgated<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/independence-day-2017\/#salem\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170501ff\/20170703-800px-Witchcraft_at_Salem_Village-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Pharisees and Sadducees agreed that the Torah was &#8220;Biblical.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But Sadducees thought the written Torah was divine authority&#8217;s <strong>only<\/strong> source.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/love-and-science\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>They saw the Torah as the only source for worship and everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>That makes me a bit more like the Pharisees. Looking at how they saw Helenization, I&#8217;m sort of like a Sadducee.<\/p>\n<p>That may need explaining.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a Christian, so I think &#8220;ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.&#8221; So do many Christians who aren&#8217;t Catholic.<\/p>\n<p>Studying the Bible is vital to my faith. I think it&#8217;s the word of God. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c2a3.htm#101\">101<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c2a3.htm#133\">133<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I also think Tradition and the Magisterium are important. Tradition, capital &#8220;T,&#8221; doesn&#8217;t mean trying to live in the past. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c2a2.htm#74\">74<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c2a2.htm#94\">94<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"wisdom\"><\/a>Wisdom<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/dna-and-cancer\/#reality\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150108-nq141002-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I thought the Bible was important before I became a Catholic.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s changed is how much I know about <strong>why<\/strong> it&#8217;s important. Another plus is that now I have the full version.<\/p>\n<p>My Bible includes Baruch, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Sirach, Tobit, and Wisdom \u2014 and the unexpurgated versions of Daniel and Esther.<\/p>\n<p>I certainly don&#8217;t mind having a Bible that includes Wisdom.<\/p>\n<p>Some Protestants I&#8217;ve known feel that the only &#8220;real&#8221; Bible is their edited version.<\/p>\n<p>Small wonder some, not all, think Catholics aren&#8217;t Christians.<\/p>\n<p>Some Catholics feel the same way about Protestants. I don&#8217;t. I also see no point in ignoring what we&#8217;re learning about God&#8217;s creation, and that&#8217;s another topic.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/love-and-science\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>That, and post-1960s &#8220;creation science,&#8221; is more of a Protestant fundamentalist thing.<\/p>\n<p>So, I think, is yearning for cultural values that helped make the 1960s possible.<\/p>\n<p>Some Catholics are equally dedicated to nostalgia and ignoring what we&#8217;ve been learning about God&#8217;s creation. I don&#8217;t see a point in unyielding loyalty to pre-Victorian science.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"Jesus\"><\/a>Jesus and a &#8220;scholar of the law&#8221;<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/truth-and-love\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170501ff\/20170505-NonSequitur-20160411-20170428-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I don&#8217;t think faith is a psychiatric disorder, or that religion makes folks hate each other.<\/p>\n<p>I sympathize, a little, with folks who feel that way. I wouldn&#8217;t mind seeing fewer venom-spitting Christians. Or none.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/love-and-science\/#3\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>That gets me back to today&#8217;s Gospel reading, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/22#48022034\">Matthew 22:34<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/22#48022040\">40<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We see our Lord&#8217;s discussion with a &#8220;scholar of the law&#8221; in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/12#49012028\">Mark 1 :28<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/truth-and-love\/\">&#8211;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/mark\/12#49012034\">34<\/a>, too. He says loving God and my neighbor the most important commandment in both.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 22 is where Jesus says &#8220;the whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.&#8221; He also said &#8216;I am God.&#8217; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/22#48022040\">Matthew 22 40<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/8#51008058\">John 8 58<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/14#51014008\">14 8<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/14#51014009\">9<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I think loving folks is a good idea. It is, or should be, something all Christians believe. But all Abrahamic religions agree on that point, although not on exactly what love means.<\/p>\n<p>Many religions say unconditional and benevolent love is a good idea, including Buddhism and Hinduism. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karu%E1%B9%87%C4%81\">Mett\u0101<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karu%E1%B9%87%C4%81\">Karu\u1e47\u0101<\/a> are close to what should be the Christian view of love. There&#8217;s a considerable gap between &#8220;should be&#8221; and &#8220;is,&#8221; and that&#8217;s yet another topic.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/love-and-science\/#4\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"being\"><\/a>Being a Christian<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/the-eighth-day-two-millennia-and-counting\/#eighth\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150328-Piero_della_Francesca_-_Resurrection_-_WGA17609-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I think Jesus is right about love, but that&#8217;s not why I&#8217;m a Christian.<\/p>\n<p>Neither is an extravagant claim our Lord made. It&#8217;s what Jesus did later that matters.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Jesus said to them, &#8216;Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM.'&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/john\/8#51008058\">John 8:58<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Quite a few folks made similar claims, and some folks believed them. It&#8217;s not an everyday thing, but it&#8217;s not rare either.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus was tortured and executed. Again, noting unusual about that.<\/p>\n<p>Having at least few folks say they saw him a little later also isn&#8217;t outstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Elvis sightings were front page news in American tabloids long after he died. I think some folks who thought they saw Elvis were sincere, and mistaken.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s different about Jesus is that he eventually convinced the surviving Apostles that they weren&#8217;t hallucinating or seeing a ghost. He even convinced Saul, a dedicated Christian-hunter, to become a Christian and start taking crazy risks.<\/p>\n<p>Two millennia later, folks around the world think Saul and Steven had the right idea. Sometimes with pretty much the same results, and that&#8217;s yet again another topic.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/love-and-science\/#5\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"seeking\"><\/a>Seeking Truth<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/truth-and-love\/#whole\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170306ff\/20170321-Westerlund-2-Hubble-15-066-detail-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I don&#8217;t &#8216;believe in&#8217; science.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t expect it to replace God. That would be a very bad idea. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c1a1.htm#2112\">2112<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c1a1.htm#2114\">2114<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;m fascinated by what we&#8217;re learning about this universe.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t see a problem with interest in God&#8217;s creation <strong>and<\/strong> taking God seriously. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#282\">282<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#289\">289<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#293\">293<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#294\">294<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a2.htm#1723\">1723<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2294\">2294<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s partly because I think all truth points toward God. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#27\">27<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#31\">31<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#35\">35<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#41\">41<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c2a2.htm#74\">74<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a8.htm#2500\">2500<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>What we&#8217;re learning doesn&#8217;t always agree what folks thought was so.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s meant thinking about why ancient Mesopotamian astrologers and Aristotle didn&#8217;t have all the answers. Maybe it&#8217;s more work than grimly clinging to increasingly outdated assumptions, but it makes more sense. To me, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Science and faith both value and seek truth. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#31\">31<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c3a1.htm#159\">159<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a8.htm#1849\">1849<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Again, I don&#8217;t see a conflict.
