(<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/citizenship-and-being-catholic\/#being\">July 24, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>So \u2014 as long as I follow my culture&#8217;s laws and customs, I&#8217;m okay; right?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not that simple.<\/p>\n<p>For starter&#8217;s there&#8217;s that &#8216;in the world but not of the world&#8217; thing. The idea shows up in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXN.HTM#GOSP.JOH.15.18\">John 15:18<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXN.HTM#GOSP.JOH.15.19\">19<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXP.HTM#GOSP.JOH.17.14\">17:14<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXP.HTM#GOSP.JOH.17.16\">16<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PZ0.HTM#NTLET.ROM.12.2\">Romans 12:2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Joining a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cloister\">cloistered<\/a> outfit like the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trappists\">Trappists<\/a>) is an option: they&#8217;re part of the Benedictine family, contemplative monks and nuns.<\/p>\n<p>Their website, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocso.org\/\">www.ocso.org<\/a>, gives a pretty good look at who they are and what they do. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocso.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=53\">FAQ<\/a> page is a pretty good place to start; no pressure, of course.<\/p>\n<p>But it didn&#8217;t take months of prayerful discernment for me to know that signing up as a monk isn&#8217;t my vocation. I realized that getting married and raising a family was what I wanted long before I became a Catholic.<\/p>\n<p>When Catholics who speak my version of English something like &#8220;please pray for vocations,&#8221; they mean &#8220;please pray that young adults will decide try out for monastic life or the clergy.&#8221; Clergy and holy orders are vocations: but so is being married, or single. <strong>Everybody&#8217;s<\/strong> got a vocation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<strong>VOCATION:<\/strong> The calling or destiny we have in this life and hereafter. God has created the human person to love and serve him; the fulfillment of this vocation is eternal happiness (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/prologue.htm#1\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p6.htm#358\">358<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1.htm#1700\">1700<\/a>). Christ calls the faithful to the perfection of holiness (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a9p3.htm#825\">825<\/a>). The vocation of the laity consists in seeking the Kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and directing them according to God&#8217;s will (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a9p4.htm#898\">898<\/a>). Priestly and religious vocations are dedicated to the service of the Church as the universal sacrament of salvation (cf. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a9p4.htm#873\">873<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a9p4.htm#931\">931<\/a>).&#8221;<br \/>\n(Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/ccc.usccb.org\/flipbooks\/catechism\/index.html#858\">Glossary<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m in the laity, so part of my job is &#8220;&#8230;engaging in temporal affairs and directing them according to God&#8217;s will&#8230;.&#8221; (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a9p4.htm#898\">898<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"love\"><\/a>Love, Not the Status Quo<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_the_Tiger\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/201508ff\/20150822-Garry_Moore_Tony_the_Tiger_1955-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>That <strong>doesn&#8217;t<\/strong> mean trying to drag America back to the &#8216;good old days&#8217; before <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/That's_All_Right\">1954<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Women's_suffrage_in_the_United_States#Seneca_Falls_convention\">1848<\/a>, or some other bygone day.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t accept the status quo, either. I&#8217;ll get back to that.<\/p>\n<p>The Catholic Church is catholic: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catholic_(term)\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03bf\u03bb\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>, universal, not tied to one era or one culture.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve been passing along the same message for two millennia: God loves us, and wants to adopt us. All of us. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P108.HTM#NTLET.EPH.1.3\">Ephesians 1:3<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P108.HTM#NTLET.EPH.1.5\">5<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PXB.HTM#GOSP.JOH.3.17\">John 3:17<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c2a1.htm#52\">52<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a7.htm#1825\">1825<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why Jesus, the Son of God, became one of us, died on Golgotha, and then stopped being dead. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c2a2.htm#430\">430<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p122a5p2.htm#655\">655<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s1c2a2.htm#2669\">2669<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s more to my faith, of course.<\/p>\n<p>I should love God, love my neighbor, see everybody as my neighbor, and treat others as I&#8217;d like to be treated. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.43\">Matthew 5:43<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVE.HTM#GOSP.MAT.5.44\">44<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVG.HTM#GOSP.MAT.7.12\">7:12<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#GOSP.MAT.22.36\">22:36<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVV.HTM#GOSP.MAT.22.40\">40<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWE.HTM#GOSP.MAR.12.28\">Mark 12:28<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWE.HTM#GOSP.MAR.12.31\">31<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWP.HTM#GOSP.LUK.6.31\">Luke 6:31<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.25\">10:25<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.27\">27<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.29\">29<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWT.HTM#GOSP.LUK.10.37\">37<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a6.htm#1789\">1789<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Acting as if God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit \u2014 and what Our Lord taught \u2014 matter is what applying God&#8217;s will to temporal affairs is about. (<a href=\"http:\/\/catholiccitizenamerica.blogspot.com\/2014\/07\/predestination-free-will-from-gods.html#acting\">July 27, 2014<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/credo.htm\">Nicene Creed<\/a> is a pretty good summary of our faith. &#8220;&#8230;We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come&#8221; \u2014 but this isn&#8217;t a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/pie_in_the_sky\">pie in the sky<\/a> by and bye&#8221; faith.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"crime\"><\/a>Crime and\/or Evil<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/radio-ranch.com\/chickenman.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/chickenman-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>As one of &#8216;those crazy kids,&#8217; I enjoyed the campy humor of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chickenman_%28radio_series%29\">Chickenman&#8217;s<\/a> radio adventures.<\/p>\n<p>The fantastic fowl&#8217;s comedic battle against &#8220;crime and\/or evil&#8221; contained a (tiny) element of truth.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes what&#8217;s legal is not right.<\/p>\n<p>If I thought the perfect society existed in 1st century Rome, or American suburbia in the 1950s, I&#8217;d be doing what I can to restore that way of life.<\/p>\n<p>But like I keep saying, we haven&#8217;t had a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_Age\">golden age<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t have a truly just society today, either, so accepting the status quo isn&#8217;t an option.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m supposed to be a good citizen here in America: contributing &#8220;&#8230;to the good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom&#8230;.&#8221; (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a4.htm#2239\">2239<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>But as Paul wrote to the Philippians, &#8220;&#8230;our citizenship is in heaven&#8230;.&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10H.HTM#NTLET.PHI.3.20\">Philippians 3:20<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>As a Catholic, I must submit to the authority of whoever runs the territory I&#8217;m in: <strong>unless<\/strong> doing what they say would violate the &#8216;love God, love your neighbor, everyone&#8217;s your neighbor&#8217; principle. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a4.htm#2239\">2239<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a4.htm#2242\">2242<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what got <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_More\">Thomas More<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Fisher\">John Fisher<\/a> killed. Their king wanted a male heir, understandably.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn&#8217;t having any luck with his <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catherine_of_Aragon\">wife<\/a>, so he told <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_Clement_VII#English_Reformation\">Pope Clement VII<\/a> to annul the marriage. The Pope wouldn&#8217;t, so <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_VIII_of_England\">Henry VIII of England<\/a> set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/English_Reformation#Henry_VIII:_marriages_and_desire_for_a_male_heir\">state church<\/a>, with Henry as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supreme_Head_of_the_Church_of_England\">Supreme Head of the Church of England<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas More and John Fisher wouldn&#8217;t play along, so they were convicted of treason and killed. Quite a few wives, executions, and pillaged <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_VIII_of_England#Shrines_destroyed_and_monasteries_dissolved\">monasteries<\/a>, later \u2014 Henry <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_VIII_of_England#Death_and_burial\">died<\/a>. To his credit, by that time he had a legitimate <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_VI_of_England\">son<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That got <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_VI_of_England#Succession_crisis\">messy<\/a> about six years later: and yes, this is a huge oversimplification.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"legal\"><\/a>Legal, but Not Right<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User:RealDeafWiki\/sandbox#American_Eugenics:_1907-1926\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20141204-800px-Indiana_Eugenics_Law_Marker-329.JPG?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>Where was I? Trappist monks, Chickenman, Henry VIII. Right.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d have to refuse an order to commit genocide, for example, even if the full authority of the United States Congress and Supreme Court was behind it. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2313\">2313<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Even the most strident anti-immigrant American politicos have stopped short of campaigning for genocide, though: happily.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, back in in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buck_v._Bell\">1927<\/a> the U.S. Supreme Court okayed a state&#8217;s right to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compulsory_sterilization#United_States\">remove &#8220;defectives&#8221;<\/a> from the gene pool. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eugenics_in_the_United_States\">Eugenics<\/a> was quite popular \u2014 among &#8216;superior&#8217; folks, at any rate.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m no fan of genocide or eugenics, partly because many of my ancestors are of an &#8216;inferior race,&#8217; I&#8217;m rather close to being <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Life_unworthy_of_life\">Lebensunwertes Leben<\/a>, and that&#8217;s several more topics.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing what state-sponsored eugenic programs did dampened enthusiasm after World War II, but forced <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compulsory_sterilization#United_States\">sterilizations<\/a> for &#8220;therapeutic&#8221; reasons, or as a punishment, still happen in my country.<\/p>\n<p>Since the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abortion_in_the_United_States#Pre-Roe_precedents\">1960s<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Euthanasia_in_the_United_States#Legislation_and_political_movements\">1980s<\/a>, killing innocent people has been decriminalized in quite a few states: as long as it&#8217;s done when they&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abortion_in_the_United_States\">under an arbitrary age<\/a>; or are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Euthanasia_in_the_United_States\">sick enough<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I think this is wrong. More to the point, the Church says it&#8217;s not right \u2014 because human life is sacred and murder is wrong, even if it&#8217;s legal. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2258\">2258<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2270\">2270<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a5.htm#2279\">2279<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"two\"><\/a>&#8220;Two Coats of Paint,&#8221; Truth, and Money<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ca.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Joan_Fuster_i_Ortells\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150124-800px-Victor_Dubreuil_-_Money_to_Burn_oil_on_canvas_1893-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>&#8216;Going native,&#8217;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/not-going-native\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup> adopting the lifestyle of the locals, is easy: but it&#8217;s not necessarily a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis talked about that sort of thing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;In essence, Francis explained, they are &#8216;worldly Christians, Christians in name, with two or three Christian attributes, but nothing more&#8217;. They are &#8216;pagan Christians&#8217;. The have &#8216;a Christian name, but a pagan life&#8217; or, to put it another way, &#8216;pagans painted with two coats of Christianity: thus they appear as Christians, but they are pagans&#8217;&#8230;.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/cotidie\/2014\/documents\/papa-francesco-cotidie_20141107_two-coats-of-paint.html\">Two coats of Paint<\/a>,&#8221; Pope Francis, Morning Meditation in the Chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae (November 7, 2014) <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">via L&#8217;Osservatore Romano, Weekly edition in English, n. 46, (November 14, 2014)<\/span>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s not &#8216;those people over there.&#8217; <strong>Anybody<\/strong> can slide away from Truth. The trick is paying attention to what&#8217;s important:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;The signs to understand what we are moving toward, the Pope said, &#8216;are in your heart: if you love and are attached to money, to vanity and pride, you are on that bad path; if you seek to love God, to serve others, if you are gentle, if you are humble, if you serve others, you are on the good path&#8217;. And thus, &#8216;your identity card is good: it&#8217;s from Heaven&#8217;. It&#8217;s <strong>love<\/strong> of money that gets us in trouble. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P114.HTM#NTLET.1TIM.6.10\">1 Timothy 6:10<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P11S.HTM#NTLET.HEB.13.5\">Hebrews 13:5<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a0.htm#2544\">2544<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Humility isn&#8217;t delusion, it&#8217;s accepting reality; and I&#8217;m drifting off-topic again.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"taking\"><\/a>Taking Love Seriously<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jadrienc.deviantart.com\/art\/Across-the-Park-Digital-Matte-Painting-342518633\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/across_the_park___digital_matte_painting_by_jadrienc-d5nxd2h-detail-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/go+with+the+flow\">Going with the flow<\/a>, even if it&#8217;s wrong, isn&#8217;t an option. Neither is desperately clinging to the way things were: or the way I&#8217;d like things to have been.<\/p>\n<p>Both are a &#8216;two coats of paint&#8217; superficial Christianity: different colors, but the same lack of depth.<\/p>\n<p>My &#8220;identity card&#8221; is, or should be, from Heaven. But I&#8217;m not there yet; and if I take loving my neighbors, all my neighbors, seriously \u2014 social justice is a priority.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean forcing everyone into one cultural mold, or insisting one &#8216;correct&#8217; form of government. We&#8217;re not supposed to be all alike.
