There goes the shawl again!'&#8221;<br \/>\n(&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/12\/12-h\/12-h.htm\">Through the Looking-Glass<\/a>,&#8221; Charles Dodgson\/Lewis Carroll, via Project Gutenberg)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a name=\"cant\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/trinity\/#God\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/Shield-Trinity-Scutum-Fidei-English-329-2.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>I can&#8217;t say exactly how God sees reality, any more than I could explain the Trinity&#8217;s operational details.<\/p>\n<p>God isn&#8217;t merely big, old, and strong. God is infinite, eternal and the Almighty. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p1.htm#202\">202<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p1.htm#230\">230<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not. Not even close.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t fully explain God. No human can.<\/p>\n<p>But I can know a little about God, and this is a good thing. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#31\">31<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#38\">38<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/ezekiel\/1#33001026\">Ezekiel 1:26<\/a> describes God as &#8220;a figure that looked like a human being.&#8221; A couple thousand years later, Michelangelo gave us another anthropomorphic image of the Almighty.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have a problem with Sacred Scripture&#8217;s imagery, since I don&#8217;t expect the Bible to reflect my culture&#8217;s viewpoint. It&#8217;d be downright odd if it did, and that&#8217;s another topic.<\/p>\n<p>Like I said, how I end up fitting into God&#8217;s reality is up to me. I&#8217;m not there yet, so I don&#8217;t have that information. God does, but it&#8217;s not because the Creator either predicts the future or decides what I think. Here&#8217;s where it gets interesting.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"viewpoint\"><\/a>Viewpoint<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/anger-and-whitewashed-tombs\/#ezekiel\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20170211-Ezekiel-s_vision-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>One of the more lucid discussions of God and human understanding is in, of all things, a comedy starring George Burns. (<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/satan-didnt-make-me-do-it\/#your\">November 13, 2016<\/a>)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t like to brag, but if I appeared to you just as God\u2014how I really am, <strong>what<\/strong> I really am\u2014, your mind couldn&#8217;t grasp it.&#8221;<br \/>\n(God, in &#8220;Oh, God!&#8221; (1977) via <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Oh,_God!\">Wikiquote<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But like I said, understanding what I can is a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>I think God knows exactly what I&#8217;ll be doing <strong>and<\/strong> that I have free will.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;up&#8221; side is that I can decide whether or not I want to spend eternity with God. If I have any sense, I&#8217;ll opt for &#8220;with.&#8221; But it&#8217;s my choice. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a12.htm#1021\">1021<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a12.htm#1037\">1037<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s more to it, and that&#8217;s yet another topic.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll sometimes imagine God in anthropomorphic terms. But I accept that God not merely a big, strong, smart human.<\/p>\n<p>God is beyond this universe. God is also &#8220;here,&#8221; no matter where or when &#8220;here&#8221; is. God is present at all times, past, present and future; and in every place that was, is, or will be. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p4.htm#300\">300<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s good news or bad news, depending on whether I&#8217;m seeking God, or trying to hide.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Where can I hide from your spirit? From your presence, where can I flee?&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/psalms\/139#23139007\">Psalms 139:7<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know what my &#8216;in or out&#8217; decision will be, because I&#8217;m not dead yet. God knows. God isn&#8217;t predicting the future or controlling my decisions. God knows because God is there &#8220;now.&#8221; From God&#8217;s viewpoint. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p122a4p2.htm#599\">599<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p122a4p2.htm#600\">600<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a12.htm#1021\">1021<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a12.htm#1050\">1050<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"holy\"><\/a>Holy Willie and the Tax Collector<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/sin-awareness-repentance\/#sin\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/David_Allan_The_Black_Stool-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>One dictionary defines <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/predestination\">predestination<\/a> as the belief &#8220;that God has foreordained all things, especially that God has elected certain souls to eternal salvation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know how many folks really believe it: that God picks winners and losers.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose it could help folks like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holy_Willie%27s_Prayer#Analysis\">Holy Willie<\/a> feel good about themselves.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the good role model in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/18#50018009\">Luke 18:9<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/luke\/18#50018014\">14<\/a> is the tax collector. The Pharisee, not so much.<\/p>\n<p>Feeling hopeless isn&#8217;t a good idea, either. It&#8217;s a very bad idea, actually. Part of my job is avoiding both despair <strong>and<\/strong> presumption: despondency or confidence beyond the call of reason. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c1a1.htm#2091\">2091<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m supposed to know and love God, just like everyone else. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/prologue.htm\">Prologue<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I hope that I&#8217;ll be in that &#8220;great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue&#8221; \u2014 but I&#8217;m getting ahead of myself. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/revelation\/7#74007009\">Revelation 7:9<\/a>; Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s1c1.htm#27\">27<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a9p2.htm#788\">788<\/a>; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170523-Documents\/20170806-Lumen-Gentium-en.pdf\">Lumen Gentium<\/a>,&#8221; Paul VI (November 21, 1964))<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"acting\"><\/a>Acting Like Faith Matters<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/divine-mercy\/#mercy\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/Thomas_Cole_-_The_Voyage_of_Life_Youth_1840_Munson-Williams-Proctor_Arts_Institute-329-detail.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\"><\/a>God knows every decision I make, throughout my life, no matter where I am.<\/p>\n<p>God knows what I will do because God is already there: and not limited by time and space, as I am. For God, &#8220;all moments of time are present in their immediacy.&#8221; (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p122a4p2.htm#600\">600<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>In that sense, I am &#8220;predestined&#8221; to be in either Heaven or Hell: but the choice is mine.<\/p>\n<p>What I do about my faith is important, too. Believing that Jesus is the Son of God isn&#8217;t enough: not by itself.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.<br \/>\n&#8220;Indeed someone might say, &#8216;You have faith and I have works.&#8217; Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.<br \/>\n&#8220;You believe that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and tremble.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/james\/2#67002017\">James 2:17<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/james\/2#67002019\">19<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Faith, believing in God, is fine: but it&#8217;s useless if I don&#8217;t act as if God matters.
