He&#8217;s here! Jesus! He landed in St Peter&#8217;s Square! What do we do?!&#8221; The Cardinal runs to the Pope&#8217;s office, repeats the news and question. The Pope says, &#8220;look busy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s pretty good advice, actually, which brings me to this morning&#8217;s Gospel reading: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWV.HTM#GOSP.LUK.12.32\">Luke 12:32<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWV.HTM#GOSP.LUK.12.48\">48<\/a> \u2014 or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWV.HTM#GOSP.LUK.12.35\">Luke 12:35<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWV.HTM#GOSP.LUK.12.40\">40<\/a>, which covers the main idea:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWV.HTM#$3MH\">8<\/a><\/sup> &#8216;Gird your loins and light your lamps &#8230;<br \/>\n&#8220;&#8230; You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.&#8217; &#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWV.HTM#GOSP.LUK.12.35\">Luke 12:35<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWV.HTM#GOSP.LUK.12.40\">40<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><a name=\"fizzled\"><\/a>Fizzled Predictions Through the Ages<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocomics.com\/nonsequitur\/2011\/06\/13\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/d243fa307370012ee3c400163e41dd5b-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s been about five years since <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harold_Camping\">Harold Camping<\/a> and the silly side of American Christianity gave reporters and cartoonists something to work with.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;d been wrong earlier, about September 6, 1994 being Judgment Day.<\/p>\n<p>Undeterred, he recalculated, collected money, and advertised our Lord&#8217;s impending arrival on May 21, 2011. That didn&#8217;t happen, neither did the obligatory fire and brimstone, and the world was still around after October 21, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>I figure we&#8217;re due for another high-profile End Times Bible Prophecy any time now. Or maybe not. But I&#8217;d be surprised if someone doesn&#8217;t trot out another &#8216;Biblical&#8217; prognostication in the next few decades: and have Camping&#8217;s success at publicizing it.<\/p>\n<p>Fizzled predictions of that sort are nothing new. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Predictions_and_claims_for_the_Second_Coming_of_Christ\">Wikipedia<\/a> has a partial list that runs from the triple header around the year 500 to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frank_J._Tipler\">Tipler&#8217;s<\/a> assertion that the big day will be in 2057. We had another cluster around the year 1000.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite one, in terms of originality, is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emanuel_Swedenborg\">Swedenborg&#8217;s<\/a>. His &#8220;The Heavenly Doctrine,&#8221; published in 1758, said that the Last Judgment had already happened: in 1757.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, European architects went into overdrive and started designing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gothic_architecture\">Gothic<\/a> cathedrals a couple centuries after the thousand-year <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/apocalypse#Noun\">apocalypses<\/a> didn&#8217;t happen. I won&#8217;t claim that it&#8217;s cause-and-effect, but think that their patrons might have realized that we could have a long wait ahead.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"last\"><\/a>The Last Judgment<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gutenberg_Bible\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/Gutenberg_Bible_Lenox_Copy_New_York_Public_Library_2009_Pic_01-detail329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>As described, the Last Judgment will make Shanghai&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Expo_2010\">Word Expo 2010<\/a> look like a cozy little rural gathering:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVY.HTM#$396\">14<\/a><\/sup> &#8216;When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVY.HTM#$397\">15<\/a><\/sup> will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVY.HTM#GOSP.MAT.25.31\">Matthew 25:31<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVY.HTM#GOSP.MAT.25.32\">32<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just getting the 7,000,000,000 or so folks alive today together in one place would be spectacular. Add everybody who&#8217;s lived and died? Just finding a venue big enough might qualify as a miracle.<\/p>\n<p>The Last Judgment is part of the four last things: death, judgment, Heaven and Hell.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/last-judgment-still-pending#1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s when everyone who died will be resurrected \u2014 that&#8217;s a topic for another post \u2014 our Lord returns, and we see what&#8217;s happened: and why. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a12.htm#1038\">1038<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p123a12.htm#1038\">1038<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>As for when that happens, that information seems to be given on a &#8216;need to know&#8217; basis. Our Lord didn&#8217;t know, so I sure don&#8217;t expect to get inside information. I&#8217;ll get back to that.<\/p>\n<p>Folks in Thessalonica, it&#8217;s often called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thessaloniki#Etymology\">Thessaloniki<\/a>, is named after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thessalonike_of_Macedon\">Thessalonike of Macedon<\/a>, half-sister of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_the_Great\">Alexander the Great<\/a>, and wife of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cassander\">Cassander<\/a>, king of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macedonia_(ancient_kingdom)\">Macedonia<\/a>, who had been named after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cassander_(brother_of_Antipater)\">Cassander<\/a>, brother of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antipater\">Antipater<\/a> \u2014 where was I?<\/p>\n<p>Harold Camping, Swedenborg, the Last Judgment, getting a grip. Right.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"big\"><\/a>The Big Picture and Me<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jesus\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150404-GaudenzioFerrari_StorieCristo_Varallo2-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Paul&#8217;s advice to the Thessalonians still applies, I think:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10W.HTM#$4PQ\">1<\/a><\/sup> We ask you, brothers, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him,<br \/>\n&#8220;not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a &#8216;spirit,&#8217; <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10W.HTM#$4PR\">2<\/a><\/sup> or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10W.HTM#NTLET.2THE.2.1\">2 Thessalonians 2:1<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_P10W.HTM#NTLET.2THE.2.2\">2<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Like I said, our Lord didn&#8217;t know when the big day would be \u2014 and recommended being ready, no matter when it comes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVX.HTM#$38U\">21<\/a><\/sup> &#8216;But of that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVX.HTM#$38V\">22<\/a><\/sup> but the Father alone. &#8230;<br \/>\n&#8220;&#8230; So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVX.HTM#GOSP.MAT.24.36\">Matthew 24:36<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVX.HTM#GOSP.MAT.24.44\">44<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Therefore, stay awake, <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVY.HTM#$397\">5<\/a><\/sup> for you know neither the day nor the hour.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PVY.HTM#GOSP.MAT.25.13\">Matthew 25:13<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; &#8216;But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.<br \/>\n&#8220;Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.&#8221;<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWF.HTM#GOSP.MAR.13.32\">Mark 13:32<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/_PWF.HTM#GOSP.MAR.13.33\">33<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s been two millennia now, our Lord still hasn&#8217;t returned, and folks are still <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/second-guess\">second-guessing<\/a> God the Father. If it had been anyone else, we&#8217;d have given up long ago; but our Lord isn&#8217;t anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>Me? I&#8217;m quite content to leave the &#8216;big picture&#8217; decisions up to God.
