(<a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/new-daily-prayer-routine\/\">February 19, 2017<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I sometimes forget the morning set, but not often. Having a printout of both sets next to my keyboard helps.<\/p>\n<p>The evening prayers are another matter. Happily, I remember the gist of what&#8217;s between the Lord&#8217;s prayer and &#8220;glory be.&#8221; That lets me catch up: if I remember before falling asleep, which doesn&#8217;t always happen.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"blame\"><\/a><a name=\"options\"><\/a>Blame, Bogeymen, and Responsibility<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/satan-didnt-make-me-do-it\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20130220ff\/20150706-800px-DVinfernoLuciferKingOfHell_m-329.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Wailing, moaning, and calling myself a wretched sinner, is an option. So is blaming Satan or Vatican II.<\/p>\n<p>Invoking other bogeymen, I could blame my parents, society&#8217;s conventions, folks who don&#8217;t like Vatican II, or social media.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think any of that makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>For one thing, nobody forced me to forget. I&#8217;m pretty sure I did that on my own.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got free will. I can make reasonable decisions, or not. I&#8217;m also responsible for my actions. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a3.htm#1730\">1730<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a3.htm#1735\">1735<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a6.htm#1777\">1777<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a6.htm#1781\">1781<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>How much responsibility comes with each decision is another question. We&#8217;re learning that psychological and other glitches can and do sometimes get in the way of clear thinking, and that&#8217;s another topic.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/prayer-routine-month-four\/#1\">1<\/a><\/sup> (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s1c1a3.htm#1735\">1735<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Feeling that God is smiting me with forgetfulness because my prayers are routine? I think that&#8217;s as unreasonable as holding someone else accountable for my shortcomings.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/prayer-routine-month-four\/#2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Instead, each time I realize I goofed \u2014 again \u2014 I do what I can to catch up.<\/p>\n<p>If I don&#8217;t remember until the next day, or if catching up isn&#8217;t possible for another reason, I try to avoid forgetting the next time around.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not that I don&#8217;t care, or think that prayer doesn&#8217;t matter.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure that prayer is important, and don&#8217;t like it when I forget. I&#8217;m also quite sure that God knows I&#8217;m human, and takes that into account.<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"routine\"><\/a>Routine Prayer<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/living-with-consequences\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20160719ff\/20170303-Chaplet-329.JPG?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Prayers are <strong>supposed<\/strong> to be routine: like prayer before meals and during Mass. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p2s2c1a3.htm#1342\">1342<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p2s2c1a3.htm#1345\">1345<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p2s2c1a3.htm#1405\">1405<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s1c3.htm#2698\">2698<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Folks have told me that prayers shouldn&#8217;t be memorized, that prayer should <strong>always<\/strong> be spontaneous. They have a point.<\/p>\n<p>Prayer can be spontaneous. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s1c1a3.htm#2629\">2629<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Maybe their emphasis on spontaneous prayer came from realizing that prayer should be more than an unthinking habit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Prayer&#8217; shouldn&#8217;t be sounds I make in particular circumstances, without paying attention to what the words mean. That sort of thing isn&#8217;t prayer. Not in the Catholic sense.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;To attribute the efficacy of prayers or of sacramental signs to their mere external performance, apart from the interior dispositions that they demand, is to fall into superstition.<sup>41<\/sup><br \/>\n(Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c1a1.htm#2111\">2111<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Reducing prayer to nothing more than ritual words and postures is a bad idea. So is seeing it as merely psychological activity, or an effort to make my mind blank. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s1c3a2.htm#2726\">2726<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Prayer is a gift of grace. It&#8217;s also something I can&#8217;t do unless I decide it&#8217;s worth the effort. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s1c3a2.htm#2725\">2725<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>And prayer does take effort.<\/p>\n<p>I must fight attitudes I&#8217;ve learned from &#8220;this present world&#8221; each time I pray: pitfalls dug when time did not exist. Regrettable habits and attitudes I&#8217;ve developed give me trouble, too.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/prayer-routine-month-four\/#3\">3<\/a><\/sup> (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p7.htm#391\">391<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p1s2c1p7.htm#395\">395<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s1c3a2.htm#2725\">2725<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s1c3a2.htm#2728\">2728<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Happily, there&#8217;s help available.<\/p>\n<p>I have, if I bother to look, an inventory of spiritual aids accumulated over two millennia of Christian experience, built on a much deeper foundation. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s1c2a3.htm#2685\">2685<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s1c2a3.htm#2690\">2690<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Memorized prayers are in the mix, along with reminders that it&#8217;s not just the words.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking about what the words <strong>mean<\/strong> is important. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s1c2a3.htm#2688\">2688<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"often\"><\/a>Often Hard, Always Possible<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brendans-island.com\/catholic-citizen\/new-daily-prayer-routine\/#prayer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brendans-island.com\/blogsource\/20170501ff\/20170218-Fog_near_Baden%2C_Austria-trim-greyscale-329.JPG?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Prayer is always possible. (Catechism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p4s1c3a2.htm#2743\">2743<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has tried forming a habit of prayer knows that it&#8217;s not always easy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;There was a moment when I nearly refused to accept. \u2014 Deliberately I took the Rosary and very slowly and without even meditating or thinking \u2013 I said it slowly and calmly. The moment passed \u2014 but the darkness is so dark, and the pain is so painful&#8230;.&#8221;<br \/>\n(Letter to Bishop Lawrence Trevor Picachy (September 1962), as quoted in Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light (2009) by Brian Kolodiejchuk, 2009, p. 238; via <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Mother_Teresa#1960s\">Wikiquote<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think memorized prayers help at times like that. A lot.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s good, because living as a Christian without prayer doesn&#8217;t work. Prayer makes sharing the love Jesus has for us possible.
