Last Sunday was Trinity Sunday, the first Sunday after Pentecost. Deacon Tim Pribula let me share his homily \u2014 thank you, Deacon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After reading it, my oldest daughter noted that the paragraph breaks are unconventional. She’s right, but I left them as-is, since besides being a homily, it’s a script for a spoken presentation. And that’s another topic or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity: Deacon Tim Pribula’s Homily<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

(He didn’t explain how the Trinity works. Instead, he talked about Jesus, Judas, Peter, and accepting forgiveness.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>First Scripture reading<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\n

Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Early in the morning Moses went up Mount Sinai
as the LORD had commanded him,
taking along the two stone tablets.

“Having come down in a cloud, the LORD stood with Moses there
and proclaimed his name, ‘LORD.’
Thus the LORD passed before him and cried out,
‘The LORD, the LORD, a merciful and gracious God,
slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.’
Moses at once bowed down to the ground in worship.
Then he said, ‘If I find favor with you, O Lord,
do come along in our company.
This is indeed a stiff-necked people; yet pardon our wickedness and sins,

<\/a>I. Two Men Failed<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Two men. (pause)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two men failed Jesus at the worst possible moment of His life \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it was a very personal betrayal of a friend. (Matthew 26:47<\/a>–50<\/a>; Luke 22:54<\/a>–62<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One failed out of fear, denying he ever knew Him. (Luke 22:54<\/a>–62<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One failed out of greed, handing Him over with a kiss,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

choosing thirty pieces of silver over loyalty. (Matthew 26:14<\/a>–16<\/a>, 47<\/a>–50<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both failures happened in darkness \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the darkness of fear, confusion, weakness, and panic. (Luke 22:53<\/a>; John 13:27<\/a>–30<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And both men knew immediately what they had done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were flooded with regret, shame,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and that terrible awareness we all recognize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have failed the One who trusted me. (Psalm 51:3<\/a>; Luke 22:61<\/a>–62<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet their stories do not end the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the difference is not that one sin was worse than the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference is what they believed about Jesus after they failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>II. Judas and Peter: Remorse, Weeping, and Conclusions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

One man decided his failure defined him \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that there was no way back, no mercy left \u2014 and he despaired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Judas: Not a Good Role Model<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

That man was Judas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Scripture is clear: Judas felt remorse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Matthew 27:4<\/a>, Judas goes back, throws the silver down, and says,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have sinned in betraying innocent blood.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is not indifferent. He is not cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is not unaware of what he has done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Judas does something dangerous with that remorse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He let’s shame speak louder than mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He concludes something about himself: I am beyond repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He concludes something about God: there is no mercy left for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he acts alone on that conclusion \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

isolated, cut off from hope, and surrendering himself completely to despair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stopped believing Jesus would want him back. (Matthew 27:5<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other man also failed deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Peter’s Response to Failure and Grief<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

That man was Peter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Peter’s denial, the Gospel gives us one haunting line:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He went out and began to weep bitterly.” (Luke 22:62<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is not repentance explained \u2014 it is repentance felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it’s something we understand, because most of us have wept bitterly over our sin in one way or another. (Psalm 38:18<\/a>; Psalm 51:17<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter’s first response to failure was grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He does not run to the others to argue his case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He does not justify himself or defend himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He does not decide what Jesus must think of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter does something very different from Judas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He does not draw the final conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He leaves room for Jesus to speak first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when Jesus finally restores him on the shoreline, Peter’s words are simple and surrendered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” (John 21:15<\/a>–17<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the posture of a good confession. (James 5:16<\/a>; 1 John 1:9<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We approach and say, “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And beneath every Act of Contrition is the same honest truth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but most of all because they offend Thee, my God,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

who art all good and deserving of all my love.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s not<\/em> fear of punishment alone. Not shame. (1 John 4:18<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the need for His love \u2014 and the desire not to live far from Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Psalm 51:11<\/a>; Luke 15:18<\/a>–20<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or to say it plainly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord, you already know who I am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You already know what I’ve done. (Luke 18:13<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I’m still here because I love you and I need your mercy. (Psalm 139:1<\/a>–3<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>III. Where We Recognize Ourselves<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

That contrast forces an uncomfortable question on us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I fail \u2014 especially when I fall into the same sins again \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

what do I believe God does with me then? (Romans 7:15<\/a>–25<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of us quietly live with the feeling that no matter how hard we try,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

we never quite live up to what God expects. (Romans 3:23<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We confess the same sins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We struggle with the same weaknesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And slowly, almost without noticing, we begin to draw conclusions that sound a lot like Judas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God must be tired of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God must be disappointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And beneath it all is a deeper fear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

not that God will punish us \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but that God is finished with us. (Psalm 103:8<\/a>–14<\/a>; Romans 8:1<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>IV. The Gospel’s Correction<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

That fear is exactly what Jesus addresses in today’s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:17<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God did not send His Son to look at you in shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He did not send His Son to tally your failures or confirm<\/p>\n\n\n\n

your worst fears about yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He did not send His Son to stand at a distance and shake His head. (John 8:1<\/a>–11<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God sent His only Son to give His life for you \u2014 (John 3:16<\/a>; Romans 5:8<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to carry sin, (Isaiah 53:4<\/a>–6<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to bear the cross, (1 Peter 2:24<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to do for you what you could never do for yourself \u2014 (Ephesians 2:8<\/a>–9<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

so that you might be saved through Him. (John 3:17<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>V. The God Who Comes Down<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

God does not love us from afar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He does not shout mercy from heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Father sends the Son to come down into our weakness \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Philippians 2:6<\/a>–8<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to stand where we stand, (Hebrews 4:15<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to feel what we feel, (Isaiah 53:3<\/a>–4<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to carry what we cannot. (Matthew 11:28<\/a>–30<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Jesus Christ, God knows betrayal, fear, denial, shame, and regret \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

because He has entered the human story Himself. (Hebrews 2:17<\/a>–18<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why Peter’s story ends not in despair,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but in mercy and mission. (John 21:15<\/a>–19<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because Peter was stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because Peter was better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But because Peter trusted that mercy was still possible. (John 21:7<\/a>; Luke 22:32)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>VI. Invitation and Hope<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

And this is the invitation before us today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to draw final conclusions about ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to hide from God because we’re ashamed. (Genesis 3:8<\/a>–10<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to isolate and handle our failure alone. (James 5:16<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But to trust mercy more than our shame. (Romans 5:20<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because in Jesus Christ,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God knows your sin. (Psalm 69:5<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He knows your weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He knows your fear. (Mark 14:33<\/a>–36<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He knows exactly how you feel. (Hebrews 4:15<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And He loves you anyway. (Romans 5:8<\/a>; John 21:15<\/a>–17<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord Jesus, when we fail you, you do not turn away from us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
